2. How does your
media product
represent particular
social groups

The target audience for my music magazine will be teenagers to young
adults of either gender, at the age of 15-25, as I believe that this age
range is suitable for the genre of music I have decided to focus my
magazine on and the context of the magazine suits a young generation.
Similarly the social class that my magazine will be aimed at includes
BC1 as they are most likely to consume my magazine and enjoy it by
having an interest or knowledge of the urban artists I will feature .My
magazine will stay up to date with recent releases of albums and
festivals as well as current artists, which I feel is most appealing to a
younger generation. The social class I have chosen is mainly due to the
price, as I feel that this range of people will be willing to pay the money
for my magazine at £2-£3 and will not feel that it’s too expensive or
either too cheap. This is due to people of this age group are unlikely to
be in full time employment as they are likely to still be attending some
form of education therefore this will result in less disposable income to
be spending on a magazine due to needing the money to spend on
basics for living standards. Also, certain events, for example gigs and
festivals featured are at a high price that middle class teenagers are
likely to be willing to purchase. However such codes and conventions
such as competition will be featured weekly encouraging also working
class teenagers as they will feel they have saved money.


As seen in my survey 79.2% of participants used social networking
extremely often therefore is it a very key concept to include in my
music magazine to attract my target audience. As Facebook was the
most often used by participants in the survey, closely followed by
Twitter and Instagram, it is essential to use all three to attract as many
readers as possible. My magazines Facebook page includes the front
cover of every issue, competitions and exclusives of each issue
therefore readers of the magazine will feel a closer relationship with the
magazine as they feel like an insider. Also the Twitter and Instagram
page allow readers to tag OnPoint Magazine in both tweets and
pictures. Readers will freely be able to give their opinion on the issue
and artists featured in the magazine. In addition, readers will feel they
are a part of a community of readers of the magazine sharing their
musical interest.


A typical reader of OnPoint magazine would find social networking a
key part of their daily lives for example “Becca is addicted to social
networking, having every app on her phone possible that she can be
up to date with everything going on and enhance her social life.
Forever posting on Instagram with nights out with the friends and
close of concert pictures of her favourite artists. Also following her
favourite artists, Drake, Macklemore and Rihanna on twitter and
always tweeting them to ask for a follow back. “This outlines how
advance technology is nowadays, as it is seen in everyday life and
easy to access by anyone. By including a variety of new media in my
music magazine, it will encourage a large range of my target audience
to purchase my magazine as they are aware on the popularity and
success of the magazine on the internet. This is shown clearly in the
dark red box featured in the right corner of my contents page.


The image shown outlines my model conveying the right attitudes and
tone that the magazine follows throughout in order to support the R&B
genre. I believe that the images shown throughout my magazine and
especially in my featured article are effective and successful when
representing the stereotyped fans of R&B.
Through the use of mise en scene my magazine highlights many
characteristics that would typically found within the target audience of
my magazine. Through the use of props and costume, highlights how
I intended my front cover to be powerful and give a statement. By
wearing just simple bold colours the statement chains, jersey and
snapback will grabs the reader’s attention. Through the use of body
language, my model creates a strong statement as she bites the gold
chain. This emphasis the edgy and powerful image R&B
has on the music industry, therefore will encourage my
target audence to purchase the magazine as they aware
of the magazines image.


The dark colour red allows the reader to interpret that the magazine is
fulfilling the stereotypical powerful and violent images that R&B music has,
as the house style makes a clear statement to the readers. The common
representation of R&B artists is highlighted throughout my magazine through
the use of mise en scene and language used however as seen in my front
cover, my model represents the powerful and violent image seen in male
rappers such as Eminem and Kayne West instead of the sex appeal through
revealing clothing seen in many R&B artists such as Rihanna and Nicki
Minaj. I have chosen my model to be featured throughout my magazine as
she is a similar age to my target audience so as shown through the uses and
gratification theory, my readers will fulfil a sense of identify by reading the
issue as they will aspire to her due to being such a inspiring role model at a
young age. Likewise, she conforms to the stereotype of a R&B artist due to
the clothing and body language shown throughout the images chosen in the
magazines portraying the powerful and aggressive image R&B has .Also
through her ethnic background being 1/4 Black Caribbean conforms with the
stereotype of the R&B industry being mainly dominated
by African Caribbean males and therefore this is likely
to attract a higher portion of R&B listeners.


In addition by naming my magazine OnPoint will only encourage a
young generation to purchase my magazine as they are aware of the
true meaning. Using such an urban/slang word would relate to my
target audience as OnPoint highlights that everything included in the
magazine is on trend and the best of the best. As the artists included
will be only the best and the fashion seen in the magazine will be 'on
point'. As well as my magazines name, the text featured in my
magazine also includes hints of urban/slang words therefore my target
audience will be encourage to read my magazine as they will feel
they can relate more to the content featured throughout. For example
as seen in my content page, “Hottest Male Rapper of the week -Only
we can reveal the hot spice all you ladies want” highlights the urban
language used throughout the magazine, as phrases such
as ‘spice’, ‘finest’ are used to exaggerate the urban and
youthful feel of the magazine. This will attract my target
audience as they aware that the magazine will be filled
with a vast amount of images and less formal language.
