GENRE FROM SCI-FI WHICH IS DYSTOPIAN
AND THE USUAL FORMS AND CONVENTIONS
FOR THIS GENRE ARE BEING SET IN THE NEAR
FUTURE, WITH A CHAOTIC AND BROKEN
DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY AND THIS IS EXACTLY
WHAT WE’VE INCLUDED IN OUR TITLE
SEQUENCE.
Q: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
WE DEVELOP OUR GENRES CONVENTIONS BY
INCLUDING MULTIPLE CULTS WHICH HAVE DIFFERENT
LIVING STANDARDS AND WAYS OF LIVING. THESE
GROUPS ALL HAVE DIFFERENT BELIEFS, WHICH ALL
DIFFER FROM ONE ANOTHER WHICH USES THE GENRE
FROM EVERYTHING JUST BEING SCI-FI TO BEING
MULTI-CULTURED AND SHOWING RELIGION,
EVANGELISTS AND THE ILLUMINATI BUT THEN ALSO
THE TYPICAL GROUPS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO
HOPE/RELIGION OR FAITH WHO JUST WANT TO REBEL
AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT.
WITH THESE DIFFERENT GROUPS ALL OPPOSING ONE
ANOTHER BUT YE ALL TRYING TO OPPOSE THE
GOVERNMENT, IT CONVEYS CHAOS AND AN ALMOST
TERRIFYING TYPE OF FUTURE WHICH IS VERY
CONVENTIONAL TO ITS GENRE.
SO WHEN IS COMES TO ANALYSING ANY FILM IT’S ALWAYS GOOD TO
CONSIDER N.I.C.S:
N – NARRATIVE. SO A TYPICAL DYSTOPIA IS AN UNDESIREABLE
SOCIETY AND/OR IS FRIGHTENING, THE TERM IS MADE TO
CONTRADICT THE WORD ‘UTOPIA’. SO FOR OUR NARRATIVE WE
DONE EXACRTLY THAT AND MADE OUR COMMUNITY/SOCIETY AN
UNDESIREABLE PLACE TO BE.
I – ICONOGRAPHY. KEY ICONOGRAPHY FOR DYSTOPIAN GENRES
ARE PROPS LIKE GUNS OR ANY TYPE OF WEOPON TO VISUALLY
REPRESENT THE REBELIOUS NATURE OF SOCIETY BUT THEN
GOOD COSTUME TO REPRESENT OTHER PARTS. E.G CLOAKS AND
CELESTRAL IMAGERY LIKE CROSSES AND BRIGHT LIGHTS FOR
RELIGION.
C – CHARACTERS. OUR CHARACTERS ARE HUGLEY CONVEYE VIA
COSTUME AS THERE’S NO DIALOGUE IN OUT TITLE SEQUENCE. SO
THERES GOVERNMENT OFFICAILS (SUITS) ROUGH LOOKING
ADULTS IN BIG GROUPS WITH TATTOOS AND BANDANAS ETC FOR
REBELS AND THEN A SMALL GROUP OF TEENAGERS AS
SVAVENGERS.
S – SETTING. THE LOCATIONS USED RANGE FROM LONDON(THE
SHARD), TO A WOODED AREA, A GRAFFITI STREET AND A LOCATION
WITHOUT LANDMARKS TO REPRESENT SECRECY, FOR THE
ILLUMINATI.
DESPITE MY BEST EFFORTS TO FOLOW KEY
CONVENTIONAL WAYS OF CINEMATOGRAPHY,
I DIDN’T KEEP THE CAMERA MOVEMENT FAST
PACED, SO IT WAS CLEANER AND MORE
FOCUSSED SO WITH EDITING OUR SHOTS
BECAME MOE AND MORE CHAOTIC AND
COLOURISED WITH EFFECTS. THIS ONLY
FURTHERED OUR BEST INTRESTS TO KEEP
OUR FILM FOLLOWING THE DYSTOPIAN
CONVENTIONS.
