Question 1: Discuss the relationship of humanity with the natural world. Compare one example of Chinese architecture (not the Great Wall) with one example of Japanese architecture, including shrines and temple sites. The raid was as a reprisal for the earlier murder of a trade delegation. During the raid, the British appropriated all the art they could carry out as war booty. Thus, African art was carried away without recording any information about its original location or purpose, and its context was lost to scholars. This scenario has been repeated numerous times through the years in many times and places. Discuss whether the destruction and dispersal of such artworks are normal and natural consequences of human conflict. Explain what you think scholars should do as examples of this type of lost art begin to appear in public collections or museums. Be sure to explain your ideas clearly and support them by discussing specific works of art that you have read about this week, talking about how they illustrate and support your ideas. I. For the first couple paragraphs, write about your experiences learning history throughout your life. Have you enjoyed learning about the past? (I won’t take points off if you haven’t.) Have teachers found a way to apply history to the present and make it real or even make you wonder about your family's past? If so, how? Provide specific examples, if you remember them. If you were in my other Western Civilization class, re-examine and possibly expand upon what you wrote then. Have your impressions of learning history changed since our class? What essentials skills (reading/research/writing) have you improved upon?
II. Following a general "textbook reconnaissance,” focus on Making Europe chapters 18 (Trade and Empire, 1700-1800), 19 (Revolutionary France and Napoleonic Europe, 1775-1815) or 20 (Restoration and Reform: Conservative and Liberal Europe, 1814-1847) and look for a subject you may want to write in detail (a bit later) for your five to six page research paper. (It may be either persuasive or compare/contrast. Sample outlines for each style will be online in Course Content.) Write a sample prospectus proposing a topic and write questions you would like to investigate.
Quality research papers develop when one thinks deeply about an interesting subject, probes for good questions to ask, turns those questions into a solid thesis statement, and answers the questions with the results of sound research. Review Doing History chapter 2 on making a prospectus (p. 23-24) and narrowing topics. (Chapter 5 mentions the prospectus again on 87-88 and discusses persuasive paper writing in great detail.)
III. Finally, following proper APA or Chicago style formatting, create a list of three or more academic sources regarding your potential subject(s). APA or Chicagoformatting is easily accomplished using Word’s Reference ribbon tab features. Whether you use APA or Chicago, be consistent throughout. Chicago (also known as Turabian) is covered in depth in chapter 7 of Doing History. Visit the library or ask me if you have any questions. I recommend using the library databases to get started.
Students are required to submit their complete drafts to Kinkel Center in a timely manner. Final papers are due printed in class and emailed to me. They should not be submitted to the Kinkel Center. This paper is worth up to 50 points: 10 points for the draft and 40 for the final draft examined and graded based on the standards outlined in the history rubric posted on Blackboard. Over the last century vernacular, anonymous, spontaneous, indigenous, and rural architecture
started to play a more important role in the discussion of the discipline. A clear understanding of
the concept of buildings that are not a product of an upper class, avant-garde, aesthetic
movement is by now an essential part of our education. This weeks readings address these
topics in different ways. In today’s class you will answer the following question, based on the
readings provided. Each answer should be a one-page essay using examples from the built
environment. Use additional sources apart from the ones provided.
1. Montgomery Schuyler states “conformity to the environment is a prime virtue in domestic
architecture”. What can today’s, sustainable architecture learn from the vernacular? Give
examples from the research connected to your studio projects.
2. Dell Upton identifies four avenues of inquiry that have been pursued in vernacular
architectural studies. Discuss two of them and point out their differences. Use examples
from the built environment to illustrate your point.
3. Bernard Rudofsky introduces the term “communal architecture”. Define his meaning of
the term, give examples and discuss its relevance for today’s practice.

I. For the first couple paragraphs, write about your experiences learning history throughout your life. Have you enjoyed learning about the past? (I won’t take points off if you haven’t.) Have teachers found a way to apply history to the present and make it real or even make you wonder about your family's past? If so, how? Provide specific examples, if you remember them. If you were in my other Western Civilization class, re-examine and possibly expand upon what you wrote then. Have your impressions of learning history changed since our class? What essentials skills (reading/research/writing) have you improved upon?
II. Following a general "textbook reconnaissance,” focus on Making Europe chapters 18 (Trade and Empire, 1700-1800), 19 (Revolutionary France and Napoleonic Europe, 1775-1815) or 20 (Restoration and Reform: Conservative and Liberal Europe, 1814-1847) and look for a subject you may want to write in detail (a bit later) for your five to six page research paper. (It may be either persuasive or compare/contrast. Sample outlines for each style will be online in Course Content.) Write a sample prospectus proposing a topic and write questions you would like to investigate.
Quality research papers develop when one thinks deeply about an interesting subject, probes for good questions to ask, turns those questions into a solid thesis statement, and answers the questions with the results of sound research. Review Doing History chapter 2 on making a prospectus (p. 23-24) and narrowing topics. (Chapter 5 mentions the prospectus again on 87-88 and discusses persuasive paper writing in great detail.)
III. Finally, following proper APA or Chicago style formatting, create a list of three or more academic sources regarding your potential subject(s). APA or Chicagoformatting is easily accomplished using Word’s Reference ribbon tab features. Whether you use APA or Chicago, be consistent throughout. Chicago (also known as Turabian) is covered in depth in chapter 7 of Doing History. Visit the library or ask me if you have any questions. I recommend using the library databases to get started.
Students are required to submit their complete drafts to Kinkel Center in a timely manner. Final papers are due printed in class and emailed to me. They should not be submitted to the Kinkel Center. This paper is worth up to 50 points: 10 points for the draft and 40 for the final draft examined and graded based on the standards outlined in the history rubric posted on Blackboard. Over the last century vernacular, anonymous, spontaneous, indigenous, and rural architecture
started to play a more important role in the discussion of the discipline. A clear understanding of
the concept of buildings that are not a product of an upper class, avant-garde, aesthetic
movement is by now an essential part of our education. This weeks readings address these
topics in different ways. In today’s class you will answer the following question, based on the
readings provided. Each answer should be a one-page essay using examples from the built
environment. Use additional sources apart from the ones provided.
1. Montgomery Schuyler states “conformity to the environment is a prime virtue in domestic
architecture”. What can today’s, sustainable architecture learn from the vernacular? Give
examples from the research connected to your studio projects.
2. Dell Upton identifies four avenues of inquiry that have been pursued in vernacular
architectural studies. Discuss two of them and point out their differences. Use examples
from the built environment to illustrate your point.

A group of record company executives, sitting down to sketch the perfect rock star, may well come up with someone a little like Dave Grohl. He has the look – long, thick black hair; he has the talent – he plays the drums, guitar and piano, he sings and he writes his own songs; and, above all, he has both pedigree and credibility.
In the early 1990s, as drummer with seminal grunge band Nirvana, Grohl helped change the face of popular music. Today, as lead singer with stadium-filling rock giants Foo Fighters, he is a multi-millionaire who has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide, won six Grammy awards and is president of his own record label. Alongside Foo Fighters he has a number of side projects (including super group Them Crooked Vultures, with Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones); a documentary about his band shot by Oscar-winning director James Moll was released last month and his seventh album, Wasting Light, is out on Monday. Now 42, Grohl – and his brand of rock ’n’ roll – has grown up, had kids and settled down.
We meet at Studio 606, the 8,000 sq ft recording space he built in 2005 in the Northridge area of Los Angeles. Outside, the Californian spring sunshine throws stark shadows across some neighborhoods that estate agents would describe euphemistically as “mixed”; from inside this large utilitarian building, with its tinted windows, the blue sky looks almost overcast.
Grohl, who is tall, lean and has grown into his slightly goofy looks, sets down the keys to his decidedly un-rock ’n’ roll grey BMW estate, tucks his shoulder-length hair behind his ear and flips the lid on his laptop. “Sorry,” he beams. “I’ve just got to check my e-mail. I want to see if my daughter got into private school.” Grohl married Jordyn Blum in 2003, and they have two daughters, Violet Maye, aged four, and Harper Willow, one.
The upstairs lounge looks like a bachelor pad: there’s a fridge, jukebox and widescreen TV with an eclectic selection of boxsets: The Office, ACDC and Bon Jovi gigs, and a tape of the Make-up and Effects trade show 1997. Scattered across the purple sofa are cushions covered with old band T-shirts (Slayer, The Police, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Led Zeppelin) made by Grohl’s mother. “She called up and said ‘David, what do you want me to do with those T-shirts in the attic?’,” says Grohl in a falsetto.
Downstairs, a vast recording studio complete with Persian rugs and a grand piano in the corner leads on to a warehouse filled with carefully labelled guitar cases, drums and assorted equipment. Among the platinum records, framed posters and photographs hanging in the corri.
