2.  We’ve incorporated many codes and
conventions from different real media
texts in order to create our music video.
 Our music video upholds and subverts
the conventions of real media texts.

3.  We’ve used…
- the start of Beyoncé's ‘Diva’ music video.
- human animated characters like the band
Gorillaz.
- although we originally wanted our last
animated scene with the subtitle ‘A Virgin’
to sync with the song, like Rihanna’s part in
‘All of the Lights’ but we’ve had to do some
changing around, so an actual real life
scene of the female protagonist now syncs
with the song instead.

4. Before re-editing ‘A Virgin’ would have synced with the song, but now we’ve used a lip sync.

5.  Our music video is based on the cover of
Madonna’s Like A Virgin by Vince Kidd, a previous
contestant on The Voice UK. The song being of a
R&B genre, music videos are usually performance
or concept based. Vince Kidd’s take is a
performance based and Madonna’s original is
concept based.
 We have challenged the codes and conventions
by making our video narrative based.

6.  Laura Mulvey- Male Gaze theory
 Her theory, the male gaze occurs when the camera puts the
audience into the perspective of a heterosexual man lusting
over women either furtively or blatantly.
 This is where we subvert the idea of the male
gaze theory, as our portrayal of the male
protagonist is a pressurised, vulnerable teenage
boy.
 On the other hand, the female protagonist is shown to be
erotic object which upholds the theory.

7.  We created a poster for our upcoming music video. It was difficult
in trying to create it, as the artist himself hasn’t officially released
the song- only his own single Sick Love
ft. Lady Leshurr, and from my point of view,
I don’t see many R&B artists release posters for
their songs or music videos.
 Our poster does slightly subvert the codes and
conventions as it does not show any image of
the artist, only a part of the animation featured
in the music video. The poster
comes with connotation of the topic
focused on in our music video, as the
white background symbolises the virginal and
innocence of the male protagonist.

8. Madonna’s Like A
Virgin album
 Referring to Madonna’s album, we tried to use
it as a template in order to create our own. We decided
against putting Vince Kidd’s image on the front of
our cover, and use a sexualised male vision on the
front, in which upholds the convention. We did
take into consideration the font on Madonna’s
album- her name big and the name of the song
name smaller.
 Due to the difficulty of trying to edit on Adobe Photoshop, we
decided to create an album cover with animations like the poster,
but in different edits to show the different faces of virginity.

9.  Within our music video, we used different types of camera angles, shots and movements.

The camera shots, angles and movement upholds the convention of a generic music video e.g. extreme close up.
Although we use these shots but not for the same reason they do- vanity, whereas we want to capture expression.

10.  The two protagonists are Tyler Donaldson and Praise Ntiamoah. They act out the two
teenagers engaging in pressurised sex. This already upholds the convention of a R&B genre
as they usually consist of two people of the opposite gender dealing with a topic of love,
sex or break up.
 The location of the our music video was filmed
briefly in park- subverts, and a house, consisting
of the living room and bedroom.
 There wasn’t many props used in the music video,
only the alcohol bottles (upholds) to create a teenager
chill out and the condoms shown at the end of the video. Although sex is huge topic in R&B,
the practice of safe sex is never really included.
 The male protagonist isn’t fully upholding the
convention. Although he is wearing jeans, R&B males
are usually topless and tattooed. The female
protagonist on the other hand is subverts the
convention as found to wear minimal clothing, and
outrageous hair and make up.
 The lighting in the music video contains natural light and
electric lights. Natural lighting upholds the convention as R&B music videos because is connotes
realism and vanity.
