Queen Isabella I of Castille began ruling at age 3 after her father died in 1454. She married Ferdinand of Aragon in 1469, uniting their two kingdoms. Together they ruled for 50 years and sponsored Christopher Columbus' voyage to the Americas in 1492. Isabella had 5 children but one daughter, Joanna, suffered from mental illness.
