This proposal suggests replacing traditional pencils with flexible plastic "jail pens" on a forensic adolescent unit to improve sharps safety. There have been incidents where patients used pencils aggressively. Jail pens are less hard than pencils and have a breakable plastic tip, reducing their ability to stab. A trial will provide 36 pens to the unit and school. Feedback will be collected from patients, staff and teachers. Barriers include resistance to change, but support from early adopters and management could facilitate wider adoption. The pens cost $X for 12 dozen.
