This document provides an overview of the key differences between qualitative and quantitative research. Qualitative research aims to describe characteristics and qualities of a subject through interpretation, while quantitative research tests hypotheses and makes predictions using numerical data. Some advantages of qualitative research include providing rich descriptions of people's real experiences, while advantages of quantitative research are that it allows for confirmatory scientific studies through hypothesis testing. Both approaches have disadvantages as well, such as qualitative research potentially introducing bias and quantitative being limited to the objects under investigation.
4. WHAT QUALITATIVE RESEARCH IS
Aims to provide description of
characteristics, kind and
quality of a subject while
interpreting and attempting to
understand an event
5. WHAT QUALITATIVE RESEARCH IS
Student A said:
“I can hardly understand the content of the subject because I myself
admit that I cannot read and understand the words in the modules. In
addition, there is no presence of teacher who can explain the lessons.”

PRINTED LEARNING MODALITY EXPERIENCE OF GRADE 7 LEARNERS
6. ADVANTAGE OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
It provides descriptions
about the
real experience
of the people in the
situation being studied
8. WHAT QUALITATIVE RESEARCH IS
Teacher D said:
“Yes, I have my gadgets, I have my laptops. But, there are times when I
am afraid using these technologies in the classroom because I lack
technical competency to use it. This hinders me to transfer the
knowledge to my students. Sometimes, I feel that they are far more
adept than me to use technology in the classroom.”

9. DISADVANTAGE OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
Statistical procedures to
measure kinds and
qualities are not
encouraged
11. WHAT QUALITATIVE RESEARCH IS
Teacher A said:
“The training aids me in making instructional materials which are
interactive and interesting to the learners by using videos, graphics
and animations. Moreover, through exits assessments with the use of
Google forms assists me to easier identify the instructional needs of
my learners.”

THE DISTRICT OF BANGA
12. WHAT QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH IS
Tests hypotheses and makes
predictions through measured
amounts and ultimately
describes an event by using
numerical figures
13. WHAT QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH IS
Is there a significant difference between the
English proficiency level and the level of L2
communication apprehension among the
learners?
16. ADVANTAGE OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
1. Set the title.
2. State the research problems.
3. Identify research participants.
4. Craft the questionnaire.
5. Validate the questionnaire.
6. Distribute questionnaire to the
participants.
7. Process and present data.
18. QUALITATIVE vs. QUANTITATIVE
Quantitative Research Qualitative Research
Aims to characterize trends and patterns Involves processes, feelings and
motives (the why’s and the how’s) and
produces in-depth and holistic data
Usually starts with neither a theory nor
hypothesis about the relationship
between two or more variables
Usually concerned with generating
hypothesis from data rather than testing
a hypothesis
19. QUALITATIVE vs. QUANTITATIVE
Quantitative Research Qualitative Research
Uses structured research
instruments like questionnaires or
schedules
Uses either unstructured or
semi-structured instruments
Uses large sample sizes that are
representatives of the population
Uses sample sizes chosen
purposely
20. QUALITATIVE vs. QUANTITATIVE
Quantitative Research Qualitative Research
Has high output replicability Has high validity
Used to gain greater
understanding of group similarities
Used to gain greater
understanding of individual
differences in terms of feelings,
motives and experiences
21. QUALITATIVE vs. QUANTITATIVE
Quantitative Research Qualitative Research
Uses structured processes Uses more flexible processes
Methods include census, survey,
experiments and secondary
analysis
Methods includes field research,
case study and secondary analysis
