Gamma rays can be used to sterilize medical equipment and food, for medical tracers and radiation therapy to treat cancer, and in gamma ray astronomy. They have positive effects by killing cancer cells but negative effects by destroying living cells which can cause mutations and cancer. Gamma rays have the shortest wavelengths, highest frequencies and energies, are equivalent in size to atomic nuclei, and are emitted by stars and radioactive substances, requiring lead or thick concrete for blocking.
