Pussy Riot was a Russian feminist punk rock group founded in 2011 consisting of 11 women who performed politically charged songs in public locations criticizing Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church. In February 2012, they performed a "punk prayer" at Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral calling for the Virgin Mary to remove Putin, which caused a strong backlash from the church and community. In March 2012, three members were charged with hooliganism motivated by religious hatred and sentenced to two years in prison, generating both controversy and Western support for their activism while in Russia they remained controversial figures.
