Listening?

 Maintain open posture while listening – shoulders back and arms
uncrossed.
 Nod your head . Avoid nodding constantly as it can send the wrong
message.
 Make enough eye contact to show your interest in conversation.
 Your body should face the speaker and there should not be unnecessary
movement of the limbs.
 Example In interviews the candidate’s first impression is made through
how they present themselves.
Listening with senses.

 Ones that requires more than 1 or 2 word answers.
 For gathering information and facts.
 Provide full and meaningful responses.
 Avoid stone face.
 For example “Can you tell me more about…..?”and “What do you
think…..?”.
Open ended questions.

 Sometimes the message that a speaker is attempting to send can be
complex.
 Rather than interrupt wait until the speaker pauses.
 Involves asking question or summarizing what speaker said.
 Clarification shows speaker that the listener is interested in them.
 For example “When you said ........ what did you mean?”.
Request clarification

 Technique of rewording the speaker’s information without changing the
context.
 Summarize the speaker’s message periodically in your own words
rather than repeating the whole message.
 Clarifying the message to understand the core of it.
 Not needed for simple and direct message.
 Successfully paraphrasing tells us that we are listening actively.
Paraphrasing

 Determine feelings in verbal and body language and stating those feelings
back to the person.
 Notice the facial expression and tone of the voice of the speaker.
 While they are conveying their feelings don’t judge and argue with them.
 Be humble, curious, and sincere, ask questions such as “you look depressed”.
 Try to understand feelings behind the words.
Reflect feeling

 Be specific in your speech towards the speaker.
 Offer continuing support to the speaker.
 Respond effectively, be assertive not aggressive.
 Keep it honest in order to ensure the effectiveness of your feedback.
 Be timely and if your feedback is negative, take time to prepare your
reply.
Provide effective feedback

