Intercultural competence includes

How do we continuously improve our intercultural competence? First, by understanding that intercultural competence is complex, and it requires growing and maturing in three areas: mind set, heart set, and skill set.
Mindset
is the domain where as we learn and engage with others, we recognize similarities and differences. A growth mind set requires self-awareness and cultural awareness.
Heart set
is the domain where we learn to acknowledge, appreciate, and accept cultural differences. There are six dimensions to your heart set:
Self esteem
Self-monitoring
Empathy
Open mindedness
Reserved judgment
Social relaxation
Listening
Skill set
involves our intercultural agility; the ability to adjust your actions to successfully interact with someone of another culture. Specific skills include message skills, appropriate self-disclosure, behavioral flexibility, and interaction management.

Last week, when we discussed self-concept, we addressed the importance of culture in establishing the standards for what we strive for, in terms of setting our goals, and even determining the labels we want to be associated with. The cultural images and ideas around us are the basis of “social comparison,” and this is instrumental to how we evaluate ourselves and establish and maintain self-esteem. This week, we will continue to focus on culture, with an emphasis on the links between culture and communication. To get to the patterns of communication that result from cultural training, you will write a paper about culture this week, where you focus on culture and nonverbal communication and then choose two themes from this list of options:
· Language
· Race and ethnicity
· Social class
· Gender
The paper is worth 7.5 points, which is 7.5% of your overall grade.
Before you begin writing the paper, be sure to:
1) Watch the two videos, one on culture and one on cultural filters.
2) Read chapter 3 in Bevan and Sole and identify two points about culture and communication that you will cover in your paper. You will need to both LIST and EXPLAIN the two themes you chose.
3) Watch at least one of the videos in the “resources” box, under “Week 2 Paper Video Help.”
While reading and watching the videos:
1) Take notes. When you identify the themes that you will cover, remember that you are required to cover nonverbal communication and then two of the following themes – language, race and ethnicity, social class, and gender.
2) Bevan and Sole cover language and gender pretty well. However, if you want to address race and ethnicity or social class, you will be required to spend more time with one of the videos in the “resources” box. If you discuss social class and race and ethnicity, you will need to watch and cite two videos.
3) Make connections between what you read in Bevan and Sole and themes covered in the videos. You might want to make links to the basic principles of effective communication from week 1. You will need to “engage” with the reading and video. If you don’t quite understand what it means to “engage” with course material and cite sources, please review the document titled “Engaging with Course Content,” which can be found in the “resources” section of the culture paper assignment.
Here is some advice about approaching the potential themes you will address with each topic:
Nonverbal communication:
This is covered in chapter 4 in Bevan and Sole (2014). They explain that nonverbal communication is a primary way that we process the messages of others and this typically happens unconsciously. Forming strategies to deal with diversity issues can be a tricky business. The popular approach today is political correctness, which unfortunately, is often neither political nor correct. This is not to say that it is acceptable to behave or speak in a disrespectful manner to or about other persons, or to tolerate overt discrimination against others. What it does mean is that we should be focusing on the underlying power associated with these terms, attitudes, and behaviors. An example is the current view of the use of the n-word. It is considered so demeaning and insulting that it cannot even be spoken aloud, yet everyone knows exactly what the n-word is. The point is that it isn't the word, but rather the cultural understandings and reactions that are conjured up by the single letter
n
. What we have done is to simply replace one word with another without changing the underlying meaning and power of the term. It seems that many think that by making the speaking of the word taboo, the racist meaning behind it no longer exists. Unfortunately, nothing is that simple.

To begin, we must look within our own social and cultural understandings. We all have prejudices and ideological values about ourselves and others, and we talked about these in a previous lecture. One of the problems with the politically correct approach is that it labels people whose understandings do not conform to doctrine as either racist or sexist. This amounts to trying to eliminate derogatory stereotyping by applying derogatory stereotypes and is; therefore, just as likely to arouse resentment and resistance in the dominant group as it is in any minority group.
The first step is to overcome the reluctance to admit that we base our reactions to, or understandings of, minority groups on values and assumptions that may not be accurate or factual. As was pointed out earlier in the course, much of what we know comes from a very limited set of information sources. Most people with whom we interact regularly are more like ourselves than not, and we tend to place value and acceptability on those things that are familiar and comfortable. Our educational system has for many years placed White, middle-class, and mostly male ideals, achievements, and values at the core of our curriculums. Much of what is learned about minorities is negative, in the sense that they are presented as subordinate groups who performed menial tasks and are often portrayed as simple, child-like people who needed care and nurturing. Little mention was made of people such as Dr. Charles Drew, Elijah McCoy, Otis Boykin, Garrett Mor.

Think about specific situations in which a miscommunication occurred that you believe was based
on a communication style disconnect of some kind.
Defining Communication Style
Communication style is the way in which we communicate, a pattern of verbal and nonverbal
behaviors that comprises our preferred ways of giving and receiving information in a specific
situation. If the message content is the what and the communicators the who, then communication
style is the how. Communication style includes, for example, how we accomplish the following
tasks:
1. Organize and present information and like it to be organized
2. Encourage and like to be encouraged
3. Agree or disagree with others’ ideas and prefer agreement or lack thereof to be
communicated
4. Build relationships, trust, and intimacy with others
5. Communicate politeness and perceive politeness to be communicated
6. Negotiate and prefer to be negotiated with
7. Establish credibility
8. Approach, manage, and resolve conflict
9. Make decisions and solve problems
10. Interrupt and prefer to be interrupted

Based on our definition and the preceding list, you can see that communication style is broad in
scope, and as such it encompasses many specific patterns we engage in every day. Our belief is that
these patterns are not universally accepted rules of human interaction; instead, communication style
preferences reflect our personal and cultural upbringings. Even simple nonverbal behaviors that we
may consider “natural” are typically learned. People all over the world smile and use eye contact,
but they do so in different ways and for different purposes. Answers to the following questions, all
about communication style, vary by culture as well as by individual and specific context:

Describe a fictional or real-life, work related conflict that has arisen from, and is complicated by, cultural differences. This scenario will serve as the basis for your course project.
Write a two-page narrative detailing pertinent information about your scenario including:
A clear statement of the conflict and project research question.
A description of the essential elements of the conflict, including any relevant details leading up to the conflict.
A discussion of the cultural competencies of the participants.
A rationale for the relevance or importance of this scenario to foster the understanding of diversity issues.
Part 2
It is also important for you to be aware of your own cultural competencies or how well you are able to act with people from other cultures. At the end of this course, you will be asked to assess how participating in this course has contributed to your personal and professional growth. In order to do that, it is helpful to have a starting point for your reflection. Refer to the Sperry (2012) article on cultural competencies from this unit's readings.

I used to think that culture was the values and beliefs of a group of people. But our text helps to understand what culture is. According to our text “culture is defined as the relatively specialized lifestyle of a group of people that is passed on from one generation to the next through communication not through genes” (Devito, J.A., 2016, Sec. 2.1). In order to understand culture we can look at values, beliefs, language, and their way of communicating. We must look at the differences from culture to culture such as is it individualistic or collectivist orientation, the power structure, masculinity and femininity, their tolerance for ambiguity, orientation and indulgence and restraint. (Devito, J.A., 2016). All of these factors influence communication. “One reason why culture is so important is that interpersonal competence is culture specific, what proves effective in one culture may prove ineffective in another” (Devito, J.A., 2016, Sec. 2.1). We may have certain attitudes about things based on the culture we were raised in. In order to communicate effectively these attitudes and beliefs must be set aside. We have to have an open mind and see things from others perspectives. I was raised in a family that instilled good morals and values in me, I am a spiritual person not a religious one and I find all religions have one thing in common putting others needs before our own. I see everyone as my equal and have a positive outlook on life. I am mindful and considerate of others perspectives.
Cultural orientation is important for interpersonal communication when working as a human service professional for many reasons. First what is effective in one culture may be ineffective in another. Understanding the values that other cultures hold helps to promote effective communication. Understanding the religious beliefs of others is beneficial as well. For example if I was working with a client with SUD who was an Atheist and told them to look into spirituality or religion to help them find sobriety this might be offensive to them. So knowing their religious beliefs would be helpful in communicating with this client. The more we understand other cultures the better we will be at interpersonal communication with those individuals.

Forming strategies to deal with diversity issues can be a tricky business. The popular approach today is political correctness, which unfortunately, is often neither political nor correct. This is not to say that it is acceptable to behave or speak in a disrespectful manner to or about other persons, or to tolerate overt discrimination against others. What it does mean is that we should be focusing on the underlying power associated with these terms, attitudes, and behaviors. An example is the current view of the use of the n-word. It is considered so demeaning and insulting that it cannot even be spoken aloud, yet everyone knows exactly what the n-word is. The point is that it isn't the word, but rather the cultural understandings and reactions that are conjured up by the single letter
n
. What we have done is to simply replace one word with another without changing the underlying meaning and power of the term. It seems that many think that by making the speaking of the word taboo, the racist meaning behind it no longer exists. Unfortunately, nothing is that simple.

To begin, we must look within our own social and cultural understandings. We all have prejudices and ideological values about ourselves and others, and we talked about these in a previous lecture. One of the problems with the politically correct approach is that it labels people whose understandings do not conform to doctrine as either racist or sexist. This amounts to trying to eliminate derogatory stereotyping by applying derogatory stereotypes and is; therefore, just as likely to arouse resentment and resistance in the dominant group as it is in any minority group.
The first step is to overcome the reluctance to admit that we base our reactions to, or understandings of, minority groups on values and assumptions that may not be accurate or factual. As was pointed out earlier in the course, much of what we know comes from a very limited set of information sources. Most people with whom we interact regularly are more like ourselves than not, and we tend to place value and acceptability on those things that are familiar and comfortable. Our educational system has for many years placed White, middle-class, and mostly male ideals, achievements, and values at the core of our curriculums. Much of what is learned about minorities is negative, in the sense that they are presented as subordinate groups who performed menial tasks and are often portrayed as simple, child-like people who needed care and nurturing. Little mention was made of people such as Dr. Charles Drew, Elijah McCoy, Otis Boykin, Garrett Mor.

Think about specific situations in which a miscommunication occurred that you believe was based
on a communication style disconnect of some kind.
Defining Communication Style
Communication style is the way in which we communicate, a pattern of verbal and nonverbal
behaviors that comprises our preferred ways of giving and receiving information in a specific
situation. If the message content is the what and the communicators the who, then communication
style is the how. Communication style includes, for example, how we accomplish the following
tasks:
1. Organize and present information and like it to be organized
2. Encourage and like to be encouraged
3. Agree or disagree with others’ ideas and prefer agreement or lack thereof to be
communicated
4. Build relationships, trust, and intimacy with others
5. Communicate politeness and perceive politeness to be communicated
6. Negotiate and prefer to be negotiated with
7. Establish credibility
8. Approach, manage, and resolve conflict
9. Make decisions and solve problems
10. Interrupt and prefer to be interrupted

MONICA’S POST:
I used to think that culture was the values and beliefs of a group of people. But our text helps to understand what culture is. According to our text “culture is defined as the relatively specialized lifestyle of a group of people that is passed on from one generation to the next through communication not through genes” (Devito, J.A., 2016, Sec. 2.1). In order to understand culture we can look at values, beliefs, language, and their way of communicating. We must look at the differences from culture to culture such as is it individualistic or collectivist orientation, the power structure, masculinity and femininity, their tolerance for ambiguity, orientation and indulgence and restraint. (Devito, J.A., 2016). All of these factors influence communication. “One reason why culture is so important is that interpersonal competence is culture specific, what proves effective in one culture may prove ineffective in another” (Devito, J.A., 2016, Sec. 2.1). We may have certain attitudes about things based on the culture we were raised in. In order to communicate effectively these attitudes and beliefs must be set aside. We have to have an open mind and see things from others perspectives. I was raised in a family that instilled good morals and values in me, I am a spiritual person not a religious one and I find all religions have one thing in common putting others needs before our own. I see everyone as my equal and have a positive outlook on life. I am mindful and considerate of others perspectives.
Cultural orientation is important for interpersonal communication when working as a human service professional for many reasons. First what is effective in one culture may be ineffective in another. Understanding the values that other cultures hold helps to promote effective communication. Understanding the religious beliefs of others is beneficial as well. For example if I was working with a client with SUD who was an Atheist and told them to look into spirituality or religion to help them find sobriety this might be offensive to them. So knowing their religious beliefs would be helpful in communicating with this client. The more we understand other cultures the better we will be at interpersonal communication with those individuals.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing.
