The People's United Party expresses condolences to the family of Alfred Schakron who was murdered in Belize City. It condemns a statement by the Ministry of National Security that downplayed the murder. The PUP stands with families grieving due to crime and violence in Belize, and believes citizens have a right to protection from violence by security forces and the legal system.

A debate on the budget is an opportune time to review the state of the Belizean economy and the state we are in as a country 31 years after we achieved political independence as a nation.
The Barrow Administration came into office in 2008 with great promise. They promised a 6% annual growth after inheriting an economy that had more than doubled to $2.5 billion dollars in goods and services under the PUP government (1998-2008). During the PUP years, the annual average growth rate was 5%. Even if we take account of the 5% GDP growth in 2012 claimed by the Prime Minister, the average growth rate for their five years is 2.6%.

On Friday July 27, the Prime Minister made unthruthful statements in the house saying the the lands Belong to Hon Florencio Marin Jr member for Corozal South East. He denied this supported by the Chairman of the village in a Press Conference on August 1, 2012. This is proof of the desperation of the present government as the leader of the government makes false statements in the house to win political favours. Read the list yourselves. Where there is the indication Minister of Lands, means that it has not been issued to anyone. By the special land history of this village, only descendants can own land in the village.

The People’s United Party (PUP) expresses its sincere sympathy and extends its deepest
condolences to Yolanda Rodriguez, the children, Daniel and Renee Marie and the family of the
late Alfred Schakron who was brutally murdered in Belize City on October 24, 2012.
The PUP stands in solidarity with the Schakron family and with all those Belizean families who
grieve and mourn the untimely death of loved ones in circumstances of crime and violence in
Belize.
The PUP condemns the callous and insensitive press release issued by the Ministry of National
Security on the 24th of October, 2012 wherein it stated that Mr. Schakron’s murder does “not
necessarily reflect the overall mood in the streets of the City with respect to gang gun-related
violence”.
Such statements demonstrate utter disregard for loss of human life in Belize due to violent
targeted attacks. This failed attempt by the Government of Belize to distance itself from such
heinous crimes committed against our citizens only serves to aggravate an already appalling
crime situation.
Belizean citizens have a right to expect that the security forces and the legal system in Belize
will not only protect their rights, but also help to end the violence against them.
