Trailer Analysis
Structure
• Although vague about character and narrative the trailer establishes the
crime genre thought the showing of guns and drug use. Also suggest that
two characters (John Travolta & Samuel L. Jackson) are hit men.
• Introduces an understory between Uma Thurman’s character and John
Travolta's character.
• Title stating ‘Loyalty’, ‘Betrayal’ and ‘Crime’ flash between scenes
suggesting disruption between characters.
• Second understory introduced of a boxing match, exposing violence.
• Actors introduced as their characters.
• Main title shown.
Editing
• In the first part of the trailer the scenes are cut very quickly, imitating
the fast paced soundtrack.
• Black frames between scene with red titles reading ‘loyalty’, ‘betrayal’,
‘crime’ and ‘you won’t know the facts’…’until you know the fiction’
• When main title is shown, it flashes three times in time with
gunshots.
Sound
• Fast paced music that imitates the quick cut scenes.
• When Uma Thurman’s character presses a play button within a scene and
changes the song to ‘Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon’ by Urge Overkill. This
postmodern technique is used to coincide the sound with the action in the
scene. The song suggest the woman’s character as young and unstable.
• Music changes again following the title ‘Betrayal’. The music becomes more
serious as the action on scene does too.
• The non-diegetic sound stops completely and is replaced with diegetic
sound (dialogue from Samuel L. Jackson’s character).
• Music changes to more upbeat song suggesting the comic side to the film.
This postmodern convention of using multiple genres is often used by
Tarantino and he has used sound in his films to help accentuate these
genres.
