Puerto Rico is a tropical island with mostly mountainous terrain and coastal plains in the north. Christopher Columbus discovered the island and the native inhabitants were called Arawaks. El Morro is the oldest Spanish fort in the New World, built to protect San Juan from sea attacks and control harbor entry. The Plaza de San José features a statue of Ponce de León and is surrounded by historic buildings. Puerto Rico has a population of 3.9 million people and is a self-governing commonwealth associated with the United States with an elected governor and legislative houses.
