6. HISTORY
The island was originally colonised by the
Carians.
It participated in the War of Troy.
The Dorians invaded it in the 11th century
BC.
In the Hellenistic age, Kos attained the
zenith of its prosperity.
The island was conquered by the Venetians,
who then sold it to the Knights of St John in
1315.
7. History
Then the Ottomans ruled Kos for 400 years
until it was transferred to Italy in 1912.
In World War II, German troops occupied
the island until 1945.
Then it became a protectorate of the United
Kingdom, who ceded it to Greece in 1947.
8. Hippocrates -Asclepion
Hippocrates of Kos was a Greek physician of
Classical Greece, and is considered to be the
father of western medicine.
He founded the first ancient hospital,
Asclepion.
It is the most significant archaeological site
on the island.
