Drifting through the city, we find a dazzling flow of images; contrasts, discrepancies, machine-like motion, the images of wealth and poverty, graffiti, faces, details and everything in between. São Paulo as an endless collage.
Slides from an urban informatics presentation and workshop organized by Arup in San Francisco in September 21 2010, as part of the AIA Architecture and the City Festival 2010. The case study was the Mid-Market District in San Francisco, focusing on enhanced quality of life, city management and environmental sustainability via street-level data collection and visualization.
This presentation is a quick overview of the results from a workshop about how people move/interact in the city of Torino. It was discussed in a panel with Bruce Sterling and Geoff Manaugh at the "i realize conference".
Our digital interactions are rapidly moving from our desktops to our mobile devices, with novel forms of interactivity increasingly being developed for the urban environment. The promise of Smart Cities and the Internet of Things (IoT) means that new digital interactions are increasingly being developed for digital products, displays and media façades within public spaces.
In order to better design for these technologies, we must understand the nature of public engagement given both the physical properties and social context (or place) of their location. This session will attempt to define the relative contribution of space (the physical properties of a location) and place (the socially constructed meaning of the location). I will also seek to provide possible solutions to the challenges of designing for such interactions in the form of useful methodologies and processes for practitioners, showing examples from several case studies.

In order to better design for an interfaced city, we must understand the nature of public engagement with digital products given both the physical properties and social context (or place) of their location.
How do we overcome the design challenges:
- Capturing passer-by attention.
- Communicating modes of interaction.
- Encouraging full engagement.

Design for people, Code for computers - Jasper Moelker (18 apr 2013)Jasper Moelker
As web developers we commonly create a presentation of content using html and css styles to make it more appealing and readable for people. With a little extra effort we can make the same content just as accessible to computers and applications. This can be achieved by including a variety of metadata within the markup and by linking external metadata files. This presentation looks at these different metadata at a glance, including: basic metadata, device icons, structured data, open graph, open search, rss feeds, xml sitemaps, robots.txt & humans.txt.
This presentation was first presented during the Pecha Kucha meeting of Fronteers at de Voorhoede, Amsterdam, 18 April 2013.

Living + Sport (educational project) - Maquette (Jan 2007)Jasper Moelker
Assignment: Living+ is an exploration into possibilities for the integration of complementary
functions and housing. In a 40x40x40m volume the designer is triggered to develop new dwelling typologies through the mixing of functions.
Concept: Rather than cloakrooms the dwellings themselves should be the filter between the public domain and the sport domain. By positioning itself in the middle, the dwelling has new border conditions as an interface to both the public as well as the sports domain. This makes the program of the dwelling dependent of its adjecent domain so that new typologies arise: 'arena', 'stand', 'club' and 'window'. Subtile transitions between the functions are made through order of the intensity of an activity. This is also expressed in the routing and the facade - in the spacing of the vertical louvres. The program itself is reflected in the materialization of the interior and the facade.
This project was designed as educational project within the Architecture, Urbanism & Building Sciences master program (1st semester) at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft).

Assignment: Research & Design project for the refurbishment of the facade of the Rijkswaterstaat Westraven building in Utrecht. In the development the facade, construction and climate system should be integrated.
Solution: By replacing the excisting façade with an aluminium-glass façade and introducing a second
façade of louvres, all requirements can be met in an integrated intelligent façade design. The
louvre façade is used for sun protection, noise protection, bringing more light in the back of the
offices, pre-heating air, producing energy (with PV cells), allowing sight and preventing glare.

Within the facade development there is an important difference within the optimization process. One can either optimize each function within its own component or the complexity of the facade can be solved by optimizing the facade study case as a whole. Charlotte Heesbeen shows how the facade as a whole can be optimized through an integral facade design, while analyzing the potentials as well as the threats using her MSc3 project of the International Facade Master (graduation specialization) as an example.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
This slide is special for master students (MIBS & MIFB) in UUM. Also useful for readers who are interested in the topic of contemporary Islamic banking.

The ideal of publicness is the ‘unconditional welcome’ of everyone.
▪ a sum of fragments as a result of borders and clusters
▪ controlled space contra claiming space

privatisation of public space -> semi public - > community space

7. MOTIVATION Exploring the Public City The Public web Conclusions & Strategies
Motivation. My interest for this workshop is based
on the experience of a different public culture in
Sao Paulo compared to other cities, whether Brazil-
ian or European. Most other Brazilian cities have an
unrivalled outdoor culture, where people are us-
ing public spaces like the streets, parks and beaches
as the extension of their home. In Sao Paulo on the
contrary, this public culture is less visible. This per-
ception has been the starting point for my project.
During my last visit and the first week of the work-
shop I elaborated a theory to try to understand which
conditions, tools and approaches have led to this par-
ticular public culture. In this first elaboration I split
the formalized city artifact into so called free zones
and controlled zones. In between space has been
created for informality, in other words formalizing the
informal, thereby neglecting that informality is al-
ways a response to formality.

11. Motivation Exploring the Public City The Public web CONCLUSIONS & STRATEGIES
Conclusion. Rapid growth of the city as well as the planning device used by Three alternative strategies
municipality to control this publicness have resulted in a very differenti-
ated experience of publicness in varying districts. Both this inexhaustible
desire of municipality to control the informal and the fear of not being well-
protected against the lurking danger have made the publicness rather for-
malized. Many of the well-used public spaces are drawn into the interior
or restricted to certain areas, both being tools to make it easier to protect
and control the public.
Creating pedestrian boulevards
Spatial planning is an important tool to create an environment for public cul-
ture. Some variables are: profile of the streets, programme, maintenance, se-
curity, location, connections and accessibility. By manipulating these variables
a more flexible and dynamical public space can be created to replace the
sometimes singular, highly infrastructural and often excluding pub-
lic spaces of now in between the concentrations of a more interesting public
culture. Of course there are plenty of places with potential. The challenge is
to develop here an interesting programme, a supporting infrastructure
and connect them properly into the public sphere to create an environment
Mixing up the programme, creating flexible spaces
where publicness is stimulated.
