CREATING A PUBLIC ART MASTERPLAN
COMMUNITY IS OUR MISSION…
• Community Engagement
• Art, Culture & Diversity
• Economic Development
• Civic Pride & Social Impact
WHAT IS PUBLIC ART?
• Public art is art created for public places. Being public, it’s free &
accessible to everyone.
• Public art is typically created in response to its location, context and
community. It can interpret the history of the place, its people and
may at times address a social or environmental issue. When created in
collaboration with the community, it reflects the ideas and values of
those for whom it’s created.
WHY INVEST IN PUBLIC ART AND PLANNING?
• Public Art simultaneously generates tourism and community interest,
which can impact earned income for area businesses and tax revenue for
communities. 68% of American adult travelers include a cultural, arts,
heritage or historic activity or event when traveling 50 miles or more.
• Public Art in Community Planning creates revitalization, civic engagement
and social impact.
“The difference between utility and utility plus beauty
is the difference between telephone wires and a spider web.”
– Edwin Way Teal
WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF ART PARTNERSHIPS
• Art Agencies/Councils typically lead community cultural planning efforts.
In communities with a cultural plan, funding sources and support grow
at a faster rate.
• Art Agencies/Councils help leverage partnerships to increase innovative
educational opportunities and help prepare students for millennial jobs.
WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF ART PARTNERSHIPS
• Research shows community cultural arts development creates
positive social impact:
• Higher civic engagement
• Higher child welfare
• Lower crime rates
• Lower poverty rates
WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF ART PARTNERSHIPS
• The Art Council supports local arts organizations and creative
projects in Jacksonville and Onslow County through subgrants
and other promotional support.
• The Art Council provides support and services for established
and emerging artists through gallery shows, workshops, retail
space/sales, art events and community programs.
WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF ART PARTNERSHIPS
• The Art Council with support from strategic partners, produces
the annual ARTBLOCK Festival with visual artists, music, dance,
theater, plein air events and children’s activities in downtown
Jacksonville.
• The Art Council actively encourages cultural diversity and
representation in all efforts. The arts are conducive to
experiencing and appreciating diverse cultural expressions.
WHAT COULD ART PRODUCTS LOOK LIKE?
• That’s up to us. Our community and art commission will select art products.
Works may be functional, historical, architectural, aesthetic, or environmental.
OUR COMMUNITY IS WORTH DEVELOPING
• Our citizens deserve a voice in defining Jacksonville’s public art
vision.
• Our community has made leaps forward with “Clean & Green”
but we are still lacking in cultural arts presence, opportunities
and tourism.
OUR COMMUNITY IS WORTH DEVELOPING
• Our citizens should benefit from the revenue increases of
developed cultural tourism.
• Downtown redevelopment is an important objective. City staff are
working to help revitalize neighborhoods in need. Cultural arts
development is an important factor in the success of those
initiatives.
A VISION FOR ENGAGEMENT
• Community Engagement
• Art, Culture & Diversity
• Economic Development
• Civic Pride & Social Impact

Public Art Masterplan Intro

  • 1. JACKSONVILLE NC CREATING A PUBLIC ART MASTERPLAN
  • 2. COMMUNITY IS OUR MISSION… • Community Engagement • Art, Culture & Diversity • Economic Development • Civic Pride & Social Impact
  • 3. WHAT IS PUBLIC ART? • Public art is art created for public places. Being public, it’s free & accessible to everyone. • Public art is typically created in response to its location, context and community. It can interpret the history of the place, its people and may at times address a social or environmental issue. When created in collaboration with the community, it reflects the ideas and values of those for whom it’s created.
  • 4. WHY INVEST IN PUBLIC ART AND PLANNING? • Public Art simultaneously generates tourism and community interest, which can impact earned income for area businesses and tax revenue for communities. 68% of American adult travelers include a cultural, arts, heritage or historic activity or event when traveling 50 miles or more. • Public Art in Community Planning creates revitalization, civic engagement and social impact. “The difference between utility and utility plus beauty is the difference between telephone wires and a spider web.” – Edwin Way Teal
  • 5. WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF ART PARTNERSHIPS • Art Agencies/Councils typically lead community cultural planning efforts. In communities with a cultural plan, funding sources and support grow at a faster rate. • Art Agencies/Councils help leverage partnerships to increase innovative educational opportunities and help prepare students for millennial jobs.
  • 6. WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF ART PARTNERSHIPS • Research shows community cultural arts development creates positive social impact: • Higher civic engagement • Higher child welfare • Lower crime rates • Lower poverty rates
  • 7. WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF ART PARTNERSHIPS • The Art Council supports local arts organizations and creative projects in Jacksonville and Onslow County through subgrants and other promotional support. • The Art Council provides support and services for established and emerging artists through gallery shows, workshops, retail space/sales, art events and community programs.
  • 8. WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF ART PARTNERSHIPS • The Art Council with support from strategic partners, produces the annual ARTBLOCK Festival with visual artists, music, dance, theater, plein air events and children’s activities in downtown Jacksonville. • The Art Council actively encourages cultural diversity and representation in all efforts. The arts are conducive to experiencing and appreciating diverse cultural expressions.
  • 9. WHAT COULD ART PRODUCTS LOOK LIKE? • That’s up to us. Our community and art commission will select art products. Works may be functional, historical, architectural, aesthetic, or environmental.
  • 10. OUR COMMUNITY IS WORTH DEVELOPING • Our citizens deserve a voice in defining Jacksonville’s public art vision. • Our community has made leaps forward with “Clean & Green” but we are still lacking in cultural arts presence, opportunities and tourism.
  • 11. OUR COMMUNITY IS WORTH DEVELOPING • Our citizens should benefit from the revenue increases of developed cultural tourism. • Downtown redevelopment is an important objective. City staff are working to help revitalize neighborhoods in need. Cultural arts development is an important factor in the success of those initiatives.
  • 12. A VISION FOR ENGAGEMENT • Community Engagement • Art, Culture & Diversity • Economic Development • Civic Pride & Social Impact
  • 13. THANK YOU LEARN MORE AT JAXARTS.COM
