Edible gardens are becoming very popular with city dwellers. We all know the
importance of eating more vegetables and fruits. However, vegetables are grown
commercially using pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers. When you grow
your own vegetables, you know exactly what goes into your food and where it comes
from. You are assured the quality of your food is safeguarded.
Growing an edible garden also helps you have a healthier lifestyle. You get to
eat more fresh and organic food as well as get sufficient exercise from tending your
garden. For many people, gardening is a hobby that relieves stress. Growing your
own vegetables, herbs, fruits also means less money spent on shopping for food.
With the high prices of fresh vegetable, you will find that you do save a substantial
amount each month.
An edible garden also allows you to make a contribution to your community.
It is a great way to educate and foster an appreciation for nature amongst children in
your community. During harvest you will probably have more than enough vegetable
to share with your neighbours. If they too have similar gardens, you may wish to
throw harvest parties to exchange produce or set up stalls together to sell the
vegetables in your neighbourhood regularly.

The River
by Valerie
The River’s a wanderer,
A nomad, a tramp,
He doesn’t choose one place,
To set up his camp.
The River’s a winder,
Through valley and hill
He twists and he turns,
He just cannot be still.
The River’s a hoarder,
And he buries down deep
Those little treasures
That he wants to keep.
The River’s a baby,
He gurgles and hums,
And sounds like he’s happily
Sucking his thumbs.
The River’s a singer,
As he dances along,
The countryside echoes
The notes of his song.
The River’s a monster
Hungry and vexed,
He’s gobbled up trees
And he’ll swallow you next.
