The document summarizes Yeo Kai Wen's journal entries on various topics in social psychology. It describes several experiences where social psychology concepts like social facilitation, self-concept, self-serving bias, and perseverance effect are demonstrated. It also discusses observations of stereotyping, social perception, halo effect, observational learning, and operant conditioning in personal experiences. The journal provides real-world examples of how social psychology principles influence behaviors and perceptions.
For this assignment, I described some key events that have happened in my life to make me the person I am today. I took some development theories and applied the stages described in the theory to my own life.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

CHAPTER 1
Concept : Social facilation
Date: 15.04.2015
Time: 1pm
Based on my understanding, social facilation is the idea that you will likely to
do a better performance in a simple task when other perople are watching you. However, you
would also tend to do less on complex tasks where you were being watched and evaluated.
I can related this situation , it happened when I was performanced in the age of
seventeen years old. I had joined a piano competition in Cheras which was held by UCSI
University. To be honest, I'm not very that talent in playing piano but my piano teacher
helped me to registered on the programme. Before the week of the performance, I was
nervous and can't sleep well all the day. It made me insomia. So I played the piano when I
can't asleep. I thought that it was because of the pressure. When I played to piano teacher in
a small room, I felt comfortable to play whereas when my piano teacher let me played the
piano at the hall, I felt the another way. I was shivered while I'm playing the piano infront of
the audience.
So, my piano teacher would like to comfort me while I was playing infront of
the audience. For example, when I was playing, she sat beside me so that I will tended to
release my pressure. When there was an event, my neighbour , piano teacher, and the center
authorities would like to invite me to play a song for their event. This is due to they did this
to me could reduce my pressure when performance facing to the audience.
Until the day came, I became more confident enough although I knew it I might
became nervous again while I'm played the songs. Before I went up to the stage, I felt
motivated when I heard the cheers which were my supporters. I told myself, not to be nervous,
not to played the notes wrongly. I must be motivated. I had tried my best to win the best
top 10 performancer so that I would not let them felt dissapointed on me. As the proverb says,
'' Heaven help those who help themselves''. I managed to get the best ten performancers.

CHAPTER 2
Concept: Self Concept
Date: 17.04.2015
Time: 8pm
Based on my understanding in this topic, self concept is our perception or image
in our abilities and our uniqueness. How we think of ourselves and how we should think,
behave and act it out in our various life roles.
When I was eleven, I moved to Puchong due to my parent bought a new house
at there. Therefore, I'm also transferred to a new school which is near by my new house.
Before the open day starts, I always remind myself ''must behave in a good manner and must
to show first good impression to o ther people''.
On that day, I was accompanied by my dad went to school for registration. I
was scared because the environment was different from my previous school. By the way, I
met new friends at there. New friends introduced the school's facilities such as library, hall,
toilets, offices and canteen.
After the orientation week, I was being chosen up to be as assistant monitor in
the class because they said I was a very good example to follow such as attittude. I was
surprised.
I was respondsible to handle the task with my monitor which given by my
teachers. When I have some problems ahead, I will find my friends to help me to solve the
problems.

CHAPTER 2
Concept: Self- Serving Bias
Date: 17.04.2015
Time: 5pm
Based on my understanding, self- serving bias is the people's tendency to attribute
the positive events to their own character but it attribute to negative events to external factors.
In my experience, it was happen during my highschool when I was sixteen. I remembered it
vividly.
I rememberred that day it was my exam week. I studied hard and kept doing
the Additional Mathematics questions which was given by my lovely seniors. During the exam, I
had done all the questions properly but then when I received my marks , I got failed. I was
dissapointed. My Additional Mathematic teacher told us that there were half of the students got
failed in this test. He hope that we can study hard more so that we could pass.
I started to blame on his teaching techniques and he didn't mark it properly. In
reality, they deserved it.

CHAPTER 3
Concept: Perseverance Effect
Date: 26.04.2015
Time: 7pm
Based on my understanding about this topic, perseverance effect is a tendency to
cling to one's initial belief even after receiving a new information that contradicts or
disconfirms the basis of that belief.
Last night, we want to have our steamboat dinner at outside because the weather
is very cold. When we reach out destination, we found out there were three steamboat
restaurants in that area. What was attracted to me it was the first restaurant were crowded of
people, until the people can queue up for waiting their turn ; the second restaurant was also
full with crowded people, but not that overdraw yet; the third steamboat seemed empty, there
were only three tables of people had their steamboat. Well, my thought had told me that the
first and second restaurants have a better choice than the third restaurant due to the customers
that I saw it. My parents decided to have our dinner at the third restaurant because my sister
was going her tuition didn't have much time to wait. After I had my dinner at there, I found
out that the restaurant wasn't that totally bad, just only have less choice to order the food
unlike other restaurants as well. The foods were nice and the price is affordable without GST.
In the meanwhile, I wondered that the people had set their mind believed that the more
people in the restaurant means better than other restaurants. If they could have a visit other
restaurants, they could change their believes.

CHAPTER 3
Concept: Stereotyping
Date:10.04.2015
Time: 6pm
My mum always told me that not to be friends who smoke. Whenever they came
approach you, you must keep a distance away from them because it might influenced to you.
When I was sixteen, I met some new friends in school. One day I hung out with
them and I found out my friends were smokers. I felt irritating and I started not being close
to them because my mum told me that smokers are bad. Also, I watched dramas on television
every time mostly the bad ones were smokers all the way. For example, smokers will speed up
riding on the motorcycle without wearing a helmet, occurs in vandalism, occurs in such as
serious cases such as fighting.
The changed when I was in Taylor's University when I mixed up with them. I
found out that not all of the smokers are bad. They smoked because they need to release their
stress from the assignments. Although I still make friends with them, but I stills keep a
distance from them sometimes. Well, stereotype will be always stereotype.

CHAPTER 4
Concept: Social Perception
Date: 22.04.2015
Time:6pm
Based on my understanding on this topic, social perception is the process by
which we form impressions of other people and make interferences about them.
I still remember it vividly about last year. It was about Christmas party event.
After the exam of SPM finished, my tuition friend invited me to his Christmas party event. As
he told me, he would like to introduce his best friends to me. I was excited because he told
me about his friends how good it was.
On that day cames, I was the first person who reach his house. So, I helped him
and his families for the preparations. I was imagined how would his friends will be lookd
like. Is it short, active, fashion dressed and so on. When his friends came in, I may perceived
his friends to be tall, dressed neatly and awkward behaved though but later on, as we talked
much about our experiences, I think I might wrong to evaluate his friends.
Soon, we're almost become close friend to each other. I re-evaluate to them as a
humorous, intelligent and best buddy friends.

CHAPTER 4
Concept: Halo Effect
Date: 20.04.2015
Time:11pm
Based on my understanding, halo effect is a cognitive bias which an observer's
overall impression of a person, company, brand, or a pruduct that influences the observer's
feelings and thoughts about that entity's character or properties. Today I had experienced this
''Halo Effect''.
Today it was my birthday, one of my friend would like to have a try on cook
and he decided to prepare a birthday dinner for me. My friends praised him that he always
watched the chef battle shows and he always imagined that he would cook like the chef in
the TVs. After listened their comments about him, I was full of expection about the foods how he will
make it later.
At night, my friends and I went to his house for the dinner. However, the
preparations for the outlooking that he made was perfect but when I first tasted the dishes, it
was too salty; the cake is too blendy and a little bit of watery. Then, the halo effect is shown
by my friends throughout this experience of mine.
In this case, my friends were influenced by him due to he loves watching chef
cooking show so they assumed that he cooked well but in reality, it is not. I would like to
thank to him who's willing to prepare dishes for me although the dishes isn't nice enough.

CHAPTER 5
Concept: Observation Learning
Date:25.04.2015
Time:8pm
When I was a kid, my parent hired a maid to clean up our house and take care
of our little ones. My sister will always called the maid up to take a drink for her, take
something for her, doing things for her and so on. I read a comic book, it tought me that '' If
it's your thing, you must do it yourself'', I wonder why my sister doing in that way and my
parent did not scold at her. Therefore, I followed my sister's habit as I observed her action
and followed her.
One day, my maid went to her home town for a week. When I was doing my
homework, my sister inadvertently called up the maid to take a drink for her. She didn't
realize it that the maid had gone off for a week. My sister began to shout '' Kakak, air''. At
this moment, my grandparent came to our house for a visit, that time my parent wasn't at
home. My grandmother heard my sister shouted, she began to scold her for being too reliable
to the maid. She told my sister that ''Even though the simple thing, you also have to do it by
your ownself.'' I know that the maid had went to her home town. I slowy walked to the
kitchen and had my drink.
From that day onwards, my sister stopped calling the maid to take a drink from
her. And again, I observed my sister's actions and attitude followed her every time. My sister
is older than me three years old, I always see her as my role model. What she did, I do
followed what she did.

CHAPTER 5
Concept: Operant Conditioning
Date:26.04.2015
Time:10pm
Based on my understanding, operant conditioning is a process that attemts to
modify the behavior through the use of positive and negative support. Throughout this operant
conditioning, the individual can make associate with particular behavior and consequence. This
happened to me when I was sven years old. That time I was very hyperctive person who
loves to play only. That time I wasn't concenrated on my studies, and I didn't worried on my
marks. Later, my result came out and it was terrible bad . Therefore, my class teacher decided
to called up my parents to come to school. After my parents heard the comments about me
from the class teacher, my parent were mad on me.
My mum checked on me everyday and always reminded me to do revision the
subjects that I had studied today. Sometimes my dad got set a time which if I didn't complete
my homeworks and revisions, I can't go out for play with my neighbours. These punnishment
made me felt scarced of that.
Therefore, I started to pay attention in class when the teachers were teaching.
During free time, I would like to spend my time in the library reading the books. The
following test, I got a good result and I was happy indeed. This lesson had taught me that a
positive punnishment will strengthen an individual's behavior.
