THE STORYLINE
The story begins with Fernando starting his first year of degree at Taylor’s University.
Fernando saw a lot of newcomers when he went into the classroom. He then purposely
approaches the group of girls as he has the mindset that girls are more capable and
hardworking.
Fernando works hard to impress everyone. He approaches them and gave them the
chocolate sweets he bought just now. Due to his friendliness, they have a good impression on
him and thinks that he is a nice and friendly guy.
After the assignments were given down, Fernando did not do anything but just wandering
around. The results are given a few weeks later, Fernando got an “A+” unexpectedly. All of his
classmates highly doubt Fernando’s abilities and started to think that it is impossible for him to
get an “A+”.
The truth is, Fernando remembers that his siblings who once got good result by buttering
up the lecturers. Fernando was envious and started to put in effort on buttering up to his
lecturers. He often buys them drinks and food, he even volunteered to become the class
representative. This causes his lecturer to favor him. Therefore, he is known for his buttering
up skills and no one wanted help from him even he was being sincere as nobody trusts his
intentions anymore.
CONCEPT 1: STEREOTYPE
A type of schema in which we apply generalized
information to an individual based on the group to
which he or she belongs.
In the video, Fernando experience stereotype as he categorize
his classmates based on their physical appearance. He thinks
that girls are more capable than the boys.
CONCEPT 2: FIRST IMPRESSION
The event when one person first encounters another
person and forms a mental image of that person.
In the video, we can see that the group of people judging
Fernando by his first impression given to them. They
immediately think that Fernando is friendly and caring due to his
action.
CONCEPT 3: CONFIRMATION BIAS
A type of cognitive bias that involves favoring
information that confirms previously existing beliefs or
biases.
In the video, confirmation bias is shown by the reaction and
attitude of Fernando’s classmates. They already set their
mindset on Fernando who does not deserve an “A+” because he
only knows how to butter up others and he does not do any work
at all.
CONCEPT 4: SOCIAL LEARNING
The social behaviour (any type of behaviour ) is learned
primarily by observing and imitating the actions of
others.
In the video, Fernando shows social learning where he imitates
his siblings by buttering up their superior.
CONCEPT 5: INGRATIATION
The psychological technique in which an individual
attempts to become more attractive or likeable to their
target.
In the video, Fernando portrays ingratiation by flattering and
buttering up his lecturers. He also volunteered himself to be the
class representative in order to set up a good image for his
lecturer.
