A review on Sibyl System
Author: Manesh Kumar
SIBYL SYSTEM OVERVIEW
1. Sibyl system is an advance technological system which functions
in area of justice and governance of Japan year 2112
2. Actively measuring the citizens’ mental states, personalities, and
the probability that individuals will commit crimes, using a "cymatic
scan" of the brain. The resulting assessment is called Psycho
Pass
3. The results of cymatic scan will determine Crime Coefficient, which
is the probability of a person to commit crimes.
4. When the individual’s Crime Coefficient exceeds a certain level, he
or she is pursued, apprehended, and killed if necessary, using
devices called Dominators by agents called Enforcers and
Inspectors
OBJECTIVE OF SIBYL SYSTEM
 A new world order of crime-free utopia.
 Selection of careers for citizens based on an individual’s talent
and potential through Occupational Aptitude Test, thus
eliminating discrimination and talent waste
 A individual with unhealthy psychology to be given chance for
treatment, enabling them to return to society
THE THEME OF PSYCHO PASS
Psycho-Pass explores societal and psychological themes, such as:
1. The price of living without stress by suppressing stress and fear.
2. Sibyl System’s Scanning of Crime Coefficient that disregards stress
accumulated from trauma and panic attacks, e.g attempt of rape,
public bombing and public massacre.
3. Injustices towards the citizens that had their Crime Coefficient
raised due to trauma and panic attack, as they are hunted and
killed by Dominators without a chance of trial or treatment.
4. The concept of punishing someone by killing just because they
have the small thought or potential to commit crime is explored.
THE PSYCHOLOGICAL PRINCIPAL OF SIBYL
SYSTEM
 The psychological factor used by Sibyl System is based on concept of
fear.
 Through fear, a society is controlled much effectively as heavy
punishment is executed to misfits.
 By installing scanner towers throughout the country, the citizens are
constantly reminded that their Crime Coefficient can be calculated
anytime, thus citizens supresses negative emotions to keep their Crime
Coefficient on healthy level.
 In addition, the punishment, which is killing are carried out immediately, in
public. So again citizens are subconsciously reminded to keep their
mental health stable
WHY SIBYL SYSTEM IS FLAWED
1. The author believes Sibyl System is flawed and not perfect as the
government of Japan 2112 advertise.
2. Sibyl system do not take the account of stress risen due to
trauma and panic attacks that an individual experience at the
moment, e.g rape, murder and police questioning, resulting in
killing those citizens as portrayed throughout the anime.
3. The citizens are expected to not heavily indulge in the negative
emotions such as fear, anger and depression, which is
sometimes impossible when an individual faces danger and
anxiety.
4. Occupational Aptitude Test hinders careers or opportunities that
deemed useless or not important, such as art and music.
5. As Sibyl System is regarded perfect, the police and law officers are
forced to ignore common sense and instead, to compel with the
judgement given, even though some of the victim are not at fault and
should be saved instead.
THE AFTERMATH
1. The presence of antagonist Shogo Makishima, a mastermind who is
responsible for multiple crimes in Season 1 and Kamui in Season 2. Being
Criminally Asymptomatic Makishima's criminal psychology yields a low Crime
Coefficient, making him safe from the Sibyl System and the Dominator.
2. The presence of Enforcers such as Shinya Kogami, Tomomi Masaoka and
Yayoi Kunizuka. Enforcers are a special team of so-called latent criminals
which given chance to return to society and serve the government even though
the Crime Coefficient is high. They are result of personal trauma and bitter
experience.
3. Emergence of disease called eustress deficiency. It is heart failure disease due
to low immune system and release of hormones that gives happiness
(dopamine and serotonin) . As citizens are forced to keep Crime Coefficient
level at normal, this induces stress that inhibits immune system and secretion
of hormones
CONCLUSION
 Justice system that heavily stresses on concept of fear, needs
more modification and understanding on the consequences to
be more effective.
 Sibyl system needs to be tweaked to rectify its flaw as
discussed earlier.
 It is an interesting concept that maybe implemented in future.
