The consideration of teacher education from a global perspective foregrounds the challenge of inequality as a core challenge for contemporary societies and for educational systems. The crucial role of education in relation to this challenge is highlighted in the UNICEF/UNESCO report on the Global Thematic Consultation in the Post-2015 Development Agenda, which stresses education as a “fundamental human right”. The report calls for two main education specific goals to be addressed as part of the future development framework: equitable access and equitable quality education. Accordingly this paper considers the relation between quality and learning and in particular that between epistemic quality and equitable learning. The work of Jo Boaler is especially relevant to the former in relation to her proposition about ‘the elephant in the mathematics classroom’. Of particular significance is her argument that in many maths classrooms a very narrow subject is taught to children, that is nothing like the maths of the world or the maths that mathematicians use. In our recent study on developing mathematical thinking we present this as an issue of epistemic quality (Hudson et al., 2015). High epistemic quality involves mathematics as fallible, refutable and uncertain, critical thinking, creative reasoning, multiple solutions and learning from errors and mistakes. In contrast low epistemic quality is characterised by mathematics as infallible, authoritarian, dogmatic, absolutist, irrefutable, certain, rule following of strict procedures and right or wrong answers. Additionally we consider how a thematic approach through the study of butterflies and moths in the Amazon rainforest resulted in mathematics becoming more accessible for all (Hudson, 2015). Such accessibility is central to equitable learning, which is seen as learning that produces educational justice (“Bildungsgerechtigkeit”). The paper concludes by considering how to redress the extent to which educational systems, and also everyday teaching practices and classroom interaction, reproduce inequality.

This presentation shared an overview of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), compared NGSS with existing state science standards, and explored differences in science instruction based on the new standards. The new NGSS for grades K-12 aim to prepare students for college, career, and citizenship by emphasizing a deeper understanding and application of science practices, content and cross-cutting concepts. NGSS, developed by a national team of scientists and educators partnering with 26 lead states, were adopted for implementation across Maryland’s public education classrooms beginning in the 2017-2018 academic year. While many aspects of NGSS were not novel concepts, the standards intentionally accentuate students thinking and acting like scientists and engineers by working to explain natural phenomena and solve problems. This approach reduces the content students memorize and underscores skills and knowledge needed to explain and understand natural phenomena. Students entering higher education may be less adept at rote memorization but better at solving problems, constructing explanations and developing deeper comprehension. During the workshop, participants analyzed and compared samples of a student lesson that varied with respect to learned-centeredness and discussed how learner-centered pedagogy supports instruction aligned with NGSS. Participants then discussed the implications of Maryland’s adoption of NGSS on higher education.

Abstract:This paper builds on a previous study on the demonstration as a signature pedagogy in design and technology, this paper explores teacher educators’ values on teacher modelling and explanation. In a previous study the participating teachers identified “competent management of the learning experience” as a significant factor in effective demonstrations, and in particular teacher competency, clarity and subject knowledge. The demonstration is a fundamental pedagogical tool for practical subjects where procedural knowledge is developed over time from observation and imitation to independence and adaption of technique. As such, it tends to align itself at the restrictive end of an expansive-restrictive continuum. This study builds on the developing exploration of the nature of the demonstration, exploring the subjective values of teacher educators. Q Methodology is used to compare and analyse the responses of the participating teacher educators. A Q-Set of statements, developed and refined with D&T teacher educators, relating to modelling and explaining, represents the concourse of opinions and perspectives. The sample is purposive, comprised of teacher educators. The findings represent a snapshot of subjective values, informing the wider discourse on signature pedagogies in design and technology education.

Abstract/ Introduction
In many countries new curriculum areas are emerging in response to societal changes. This calls for enhanced efficacy and success depends on whether teachers trust themselves and their colleagues to meet new demands. Further, learners are expected to develop agency for change and teachers to develop collective teacher efficacy (CTE).
Increased emphasis on competences and global comparative studies…. Children of today may have fewer opportunities to challenge and solve open ended problems. The power concept CTE enables educators to identify their own weaknesses and strengths in relation to the challenges of the 21st century. Research identified four new curriculum areas in the EmergeCTE project where particular demands were made of teachers: sustainability, use of information and communication technology, innovation education and school science in the 21st century and focused on action competence (AC) as the teaching task. Key features of AC individuals are that they are participants capable of being critical actors in democratic processes.
The purpose of this symposium is to discuss selected issues from the EmergeCTE research. These include issues in the development of the questionnaires (paper 1), the role of case study in supporting questionnaire development (paper 2) and finally about mining the data and finding the factors (paper 3).

Effects of Active Learning Strategies in Teaching Physicsijtsrd
The study utilized a quasi experimental method of the pretest posttest design with the pre selected groupings for the control and experimental groups. The study used validated researcher constructed pretest posttest questionnaires, online distance learning plans, attitude surveys, and focus group discussion questionnaires to determine the students performance. The study was conducted at a private high school in Cebu City. Both experimental and control groups underwent a pretest before implementing the proposed interventions. The studys findings showed the following results a both control and experimental groups manifested Above Average performance in the pretest and posttest b there was a significant mean improvement in the student’s performance in Physics in both experimental and control groups c there was no significant difference in the mean improvement in Physics between the experimental and control groups, and d the experimental group showed a very positive level of attitude towards the use of active learning strategies in teaching Physics. Based on the findings of the study, the integration of active learning strategies to the group with less teacher presence acts only as facilitator proved to be as effective as the group who received explicit teaching from the teacher in teaching Physics. In addition, it did not only enhance the students’ performance as manifested by their comparable performance with the other group but was also influential in developing a positive attitude that affected their performance. The theories of Direct Instruction by Siegfried Engelmann and Douglas Carnine believe that teacher centered teaching strategies are effective in teaching Physics since the teacher explicitly teaches and helps the students understand the lessons. Constructivism Learning by Jean Piaget states that involving the students actively and exposing them to activities that will engage them in the teaching and learning process by interacting with their actual experiences were confirmed by this studys findings. The study advises curriculum designers to provide several active learning activities that encourage student engagement and participation and apply dynamic teaching techniques in Physics instruction. Additionally, to help them overcome the challenge, students should be offered various learning methodologies, and future researchers should conduct a comparative study on face to face training. Influence of Pre-Service Teachers’ Subject Specialization on their Skills of ...BabayemiJohnOlakunle1
This study examined the influence of pre-service teachers’ subject specialization on their skills for improvisation and management of resources using survey research of expost-facto type. The sample comprised 150 N.C.E pre-service teachers randomly selected from 50 secondary schools in Oyo State. The instruments used were Questionnaire on Assessing Pre-service Teachers’: Skills of Improvisation (r = 0.73); Management of Resources (r = 0.70). Two research questions were raised. The data collected were analyzed using mean, ANOVA and t-test. The result showed that subject specialization had no influence on pre-service teachers’ skills for improvisation and management of resources (F=0.953; P>.05; F=2.536; P>.05).These findings have significant implications for Science teachers and curriculum planners.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
