PARENT NETWORK CONTRIBUTION
Parents of university students like our stakeholder, Emma, participate in their children’s education by serving as men-
tors or contacts for other students. In addition to participating, parents also recruit 3 - 5 people on their network who
are willing to mentor or assist other students gain access to internships or other forms of industry experience. The
idea is to create a powerful multiplier effect of social connections and opportunities based on the university’s existing
but untapped social resources. The Mentor Matching process would be mediated by software.
Mentor Match System includes:
+ Student profile - interests, strengths, skills, etc.
+ Career Dashboard (students) - tracks interests, # of contacts, calendar, notices, etc.
+ Mentor profile - industry, experience, skills, interests, availability, etc.
+ Integration with e-mail (e.g. e-mail notices, reminders, etc.)
+ Integration to professional social networks (e.g. LinkedIn)

That means students will

actually available to them.
Mentor Search scores the
quality of a match,
organizes matches
according to score, and
suggests matches for
students according to
their profiles.
However, the system will
not exclude search results
based on the strength of

REFLECTION
LEARN
Testing the prototype uncovered more issues and concerns than the initial interview with Emma. The conversa-
tion was really productive as Emma revealed more needs that, in this instance, could be addressed through
these prototypes. For instance, Emma strongly preferred Prototype A because it didn’t require her to travel,
which I learned can be difficult for her. Moreover, Emma’s articulation of her preference of Prototype A over B
allowed her to think out loud and brought up a number of reasons why Prototype B would not really work for her,
as well as reasons as to why Prototype A would really help her. This exchange really helps in giving the iterative
process direction.
The process of rapid, lo-fi prototyping and testing can without a doubt yield valuable insights that can be
applied to better serving stakeholders while also managing risk.
NEXT
The next steps for me would be to study and analyze Emma’s response and proceed to iterate on Prototype A
and re-test, as well as identifying and testing new insights to see if there are other ideas worth prototyping.
As far as testing a second iteration of Prototype A, I would refine and develop the prototype to include multiple
pieces that show how the system would work and how Emma would operate it. Undoubtedly, Emma will share
more comments and needs for further iterations.

That means students will only see choices that are actually available to them. Mentor Search scores the quality of a match, organizes matches according to score, and suggests matches for students according to their profiles. However, the system will not exclude search results based on the strength of a match, therefore allowing students to see all matches. Initial contact would be mediated by the system to ensure Professionals get courteous and relevant messages and requests to connect.

In addition to participating, parents also recruit 3 - 5 people on their network who are willing to mentor or assist other students gain access to internships or other forms of industry experience. The idea is to create a powerful multiplier effect of social connections and opportunities based on the university’s existing but untapped social resources. The Professional or Mentor Matching process would be mediated by live university branded events that create excitement and foster connection among attendees. Mentor Match Live: + Fun, live branded events in hub locations (e.g. closest major cities) with facilitated interactions where students and mentors connect. + Gallery-like setting features visual Student profiles & portfolios. + Visual Mentor profiles posted. + Facilitated games or activities to encourage connection and conversation. + Follow-up tools and support for Students and Mentors provided by career center. 1 2 3

  • 6. MENTOR MATCH A Parent-fed Network of Mentors REFLECTION LEARN Testing the prototype uncovered more issues and concerns than the initial interview with Emma. The conversa- tion was really productive as Emma revealed more needs that, in this instance, could be addressed through these prototypes. For instance, Emma strongly preferred Prototype A because it didn’t require her to travel, which I learned can be difficult for her. Moreover, Emma’s articulation of her preference of Prototype A over B allowed her to think out loud and brought up a number of reasons why Prototype B would not really work for her, as well as reasons as to why Prototype A would really help her. This exchange really helps in giving the iterative process direction. The process of rapid, lo-fi prototyping and testing can without a doubt yield valuable insights that can be applied to better serving stakeholders while also managing risk. NEXT The next steps for me would be to study and analyze Emma’s response and proceed to iterate on Prototype A and re-test, as well as identifying and testing new insights to see if there are other ideas worth prototyping. As far as testing a second iteration of Prototype A, I would refine and develop the prototype to include multiple pieces that show how the system would work and how Emma would operate it. Undoubtedly, Emma will share more comments and needs for further iterations.
