2. INTRODUCTION
The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most technologically
advanced sectors currently in existence in Bangladesh. It has grown
in the last two decades at a considerable rate. The skills and
knowledge of the professionals and innovative ideas of the people
involved in this industry are the key factors for these developments.
About 300 pharmaceutical companies are operating at the moment.
Only 3% of the drugs are imported, the remaining 97% come from
local companies. Positive developments in the pharmaceutical sector
have enabled Bangladesh to export medicine to global markets. By
overcoming the underlying obstacles this sector can develop more
and can be an effective exporting sector of Bangladesh.
3. With a current market size of $1.2 billion, the market is poised to cross $2
billion by 2018. In fact, provided the political situation remains as stable as it
has been for the last year, the growth may be even higher than projected.
4. THE BALANCING ACT BETWEEN GLOBAL AND DOMESTIC MARKETS:
According to IMS projections, the global pharmaceutical market will grow to USD
1.135 trillion from USD 953 billion at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3-6%
during 2013-2017.The local market size currently rests at USD 1.53 billion, with local
manufacturers meeting 97% of the demand.

biotechnology and genetic engineering.
A very exciting field of biotechnology is bioinformatics which is actually the
marriage between biology and computer science, where enormous amount of
data that are being produced in the biological research laboratories around the
globe are compared, analyzed, and annotated to discover new genes,
characterize them, develop new drugs and build complex biological
networks.
The pharmaceutical companies of Bangladesh are also turning to the biotech
products. Some companies have already introduced some biotech products

14. EXPERT RECOMMENDATION
I. Providing sufficient gas and electricity according to the demand.
II. Political stability is very much needed. Due to strike & other political unrests the marketing
process is being interrupted & the distribution channel lose their natural speed.
III. 80% of the raw materials of this industry are imported from foreign countries. If the raw
materials can be produced sufficiently in the domestic level, the pharmaceutical companies
will be able to supply according to the demand.
IV. Upgrading the regulatory body to WHO standard. It will let Bangladesh enter into the global
market and thus will increase the production a great deal.
V. Like India & other competitor countries, bank loan interest rates should be reduced for this
industry.
