PREPOSITIONS
• Preposition is a word that connects nouns/ pronoun
or phrases to other words in a sentence.
Pre + position = Preposition
Preposition Forms
One Word Preposition
( In, at, on, for, with, from, by etc.)
Complex Preposition
(In front of, according to, for a whiled, instead of etc.)
EXAMPLES
• The marker is __on_ my hand
• I am _in__ the class.
• The book is _on__ the table.
• I am coming __in__ January.
• The garden is __in front of_ the mall.
• Sit down ___for a while____ .
Mostly use:
• Position
• Time
• Place
• Movement.

THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF PREPOSITION.
PREPOSITIONS OF TIME
Some prepositions show when something happens. They
are called prepositions of time.

Some prepositions show where something
happens. They are called prepositions of place.
3. PREPOSITION OF MOVEMENT/ DIRECTION
Some prepositions show where something is going.
They are called prepositions of direction.

USE OF “ON”
• Use For Surface level
e.g. The marker is on my hand
• For use of date and time
e.g. He will come on Wednesday / I was born on 3rd July 1995.
• Use with device or machine
e.g. He is on the phone/ He has been on the Computer.
• Use with body Parts
e.g. My mother kissed me on forehead.
• Use to tell any situation
e.g. He was on bed rest / Afridi was on fire yesterday.
USE OF “ONTO”
• Use as similar to “On” but with certain Movement.
e.g. Move the books onto the shelf. /The cat jumped onto
the table.
• When we have complete knowledge about a certain thing.
e.g. They knew , I was onto the plan.
USE OF “UPON”
• Immediately after doing something in formal way.
Ali had joined the army immediately upon leaving
school.
• More Formal context.
 Depend ------ My whole future depended upon your decision.
Congratulate, Experience, Happen, Insist
• Between Two Nouns
He has worked hard year upon year.
USE OF “WITH”
• Sensation & feelings.
E.g. I am happy with him. / My father is furious with me./ I am very upset
with my life.
Exceptions: (Rude, polite, kind) with these words we will use TO
• Use with tools.
I am writing a book with a pen/ He hit him with a bat.
• To show possession as like “have”When something is attached or nearer.
E.g. I want a home with a garden. / we want a life with happiness. / I want to pass with
good marks.
• When you agree with someone.
E.g. I agree with my parents.
USE OF “BY”
• Use to tell the way of work or means.
E.G. I am talking by phone. / I am sending this book by post.
BY WITH
Mean Tool
E.g. I turned intelligent with the tablet.
I turned intelligent by the machine.
• Use with Travel.
E.g. I go to school by bus.
• Use with deadline.
E.g. You can submit by 31 of august.
• Use With “Doer”
This presentation prepared by English teacher.
Until VS By
• Until (No deadline/ fix Period)
When our work will finish at fix point.
E.g He worked until 5’ O Clock./ you can sleep until morning. You can use
my phone until 8’O clock.
• By ( Deadline)
Work is not continuing, currently stopped but at a particular point work will
happen.
E.G. I want this work done by 10’ o clock. / I will return your money by Monday.
USE OF “TO” & “TOWARDS”
• To
Use to define exact direction.
E.g. Ali is going to Lahore.
• Towards
E.G. Ali is going towards Lahore. ( not sure he will go to Lahore)
• For Purpose we will use “TO” (As an Infinitive)
E.g. I want to meet you./ They come here to play.
• (Use OF From)
When something is coming from a direction we will use FROM. And to tell a Cause.
E.g. Ali is coming from Lahore./ He is suffering from fever.
TRY THIS:
• 1. A cat was sitting _______the roof of my car. (place)
• 2. Some people were talking ___the movie. (time)
• 3. A man was coming____ us on his bike. (direction)
• 4. The party starts_____ six o’clock. (time)
• 5. She put the book ____her bag. (place)
• 6. We walked____ the street to the park. (place)
• 7. She keeps her slippers____ her bed. (place)
• 8. We always wash our hands ____meals. (time)
• 9. She ran ____the dog because she was frightened. (direction)
