This document appears to be a thesis proposal that examines the relationship between different learning modalities (online vs modular) and the writing skills of 11th grade students. It introduces the topic, provides background on the importance of writing skills and different learning theories. The study aims to determine if there are differences in students' writing skills (ideas, organization, etc.) based on being in the experimental (online learning) or control (modular learning) group. It outlines the problem statement, hypotheses, significance of the study, methodology including design, instruments, respondents and statistical analysis. Key terms are also defined.
2. RATIONALE
English is an international language for
communication spoken by a lot of people in many
countries all over the world. It is the language of
technology, science, medicine, tourism, airlines,
computer, literature and commerce. Baron (2001)
confirms that over the past two decades, there
has been significant increase in the number of
people who speak English as a second language
around the world
3. WRITING
SKILLS
…most important invention in human
history because it provides relatively
permanent record of information,
opinions, beliefs, feelings, arguments,
explanation and theories (Milrood
2001)
Carroll (1998) assumes that the
student should know how to construct
a sentence, subjects and verbs must
agree in number, the reference of
pronouns should not be ambiguous,
there should be consistency of person
and tense in writing and correct
spelling, punctuation, capitalization,
and word usage are required.

7. Statement of the Problem
The main objective of this study is to determine the relationship of the
modalities exposed to the eleventh grade of St. Nicholas Academy (SNA),
Dimiao Bohol, school year 2020-2021 to their writing skills.
1. What is the level of writing skills (ideas, organization, voice, word choice,
sentence fluency and convention) of the experimental and control groups
in their posttest and pretest?
2. Is there a significant difference on the pretest and posttest scores of the
2.1experimental group; and
2.2control group
3. Is there a significant difference in the pretest and posttest scores
between the experimental and control groups in terms of their writing
skills, specifically : ideas ,organization, voice, word choice, sentence
fluency, and convention (grammar and mechanics)?
4. Is there a significant relationship between writing skills ( ideas,
organization, voice, word choice , sentence fluency and convention) of
the :
4.1. experimental group; and
4.2 controlled group
8. Null Hypotheses
There is no significant relationship between the students’ achievement level in
their writing skills in the modality exposed to them.
There is no significant difference on the posttest and pretest of the experimental
and control group.
There is no significant difference in the pretest and posttest sores of the
experimental and control group in terms of their writing skills.
There is no significant relationship between the writing skills of the experimental
and control group.

Editor's Notes
Math anxiety (MA) has long been a matter of concern in education
According to Ashcraft and Kirk (2001), as cited by Macmull et al. (2019), many people avoid performing math operations or have lower performance than they can due to fear of failing those arithmetic functions.
The researcher being an English teacher, wishes to find students writing skills in different modalities and if there is a significant degree of relationship between the students’ writing skills and the modality they are exposed. Furthermore, the researcher wanted to know if online modality is better than modular learning in teaching and learning writing skills.
Section 1 of the Article of the Philippine Constitution provides that “ The state shall protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality education at all levels and shall take appropriate steps to make such education accessible (Nolledo, 1991).
Department of Education in the Philippines in anchored on the bilingual policy which means that for the purpose of instruction, the official language used are English and Filipino. DECS Order no. 11, series of 1999 states that the English program emphasizes the development of critical thinking skills and communicative interaction competence.
Communication Triangle (Kelly and Lawton, 1998 cited in Maniwang) emphasizes that there are five components in the act of writing namely: (1) a writer , (2) a reader , (3) a topic , (4) a message , (5) the means of expressing that message (written language).
In this theory, Kelly and Lawton further explained that the writer begins by learning and thinking about a topic first, or the specific subject to be written about. This can be done by drawing on the writer’s experiences, talking to others or reading and doing research. In conveying a message, thw writer tries to use supporting ideas , details and explanations to construct an effective message.
Cognitive Learning Theory, asserts that the learner is an active participant in the process. They come to the table with their own skills, knowledge, memories and relevant information they’ve learned in the past. Through Cognitive Learning Theory, students who are facing difficulties and has a weakness in organizing and translating ideas still has the room for better understanding and will generate more informative and readable text.
Humanistic Learning Theory, often called Humanism, focuses on the specific human capabilities including creativity, personal growth, and choice. Humanists believe people are good and noble. Maslow’s research into hierarchical needs is a major concept in this learning theory, especially Self-Actualization, as it is only at this level the student can truly experience growth. The humanistic approach mostly emphasizes upon recognizing, valuing the dignity of one’s own self-worth of every individual learner and upon developing the self-concept of the learner, so it starts from the assumption that the learner must feel positive about themselves.
The findings of the study would be beneficial to the following individuals:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHER. The result will enable them to organize effective learning environment in the light of implementing blended learning to improve students' writing skills.
SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS. The result will enable them to stimulate their interest in conducting training programs for their teachers to sustain better skills in teaching writing skills.
TEACHERS. The result will enable them to help students to use multi-media so as to improve their writing skills.
SPECIALISTS AND SUPERVISORS. The result will enable them to stimulate their interests in conducting training courses for teachers to sustain their skills in using modular learning in teaching.
SYLLABUS DESIGNERS. The result will enable them to modify, organize and enrich English language curricula with various instructions, techniques and activities for teaching based on modular learning.
METHODOLOGY PLANNERS. The result will enable them to develop English teaching methods based on learner centered classes.
STUDENTS. The result will enable them will be more critically cautious in English writing compositions.
FUTURE RESEARCHERS. The result will enable them to carry out researches and studies on modular learning.
CONVENTION- Writing conventions such as spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar help make a student's essay clear and understandable.
MODULAR LEARNING - Modular learning is a form of distance learning that uses Self-Learning Modules (SLM) based on the most essential learning competencies (MELCS) provided by DepEd. The modules include sections on motivation and assessment that serve as a complete guide of both teachers’ and students’ desired competencies. Teachers will monitor the learners’ progress through home visits (following social distancing protocols) and feedback mechanisms, and guide those who need special attention.
ORGANIZATION- Organization in writing is how ideas are presented. Typically, organization refers to the larger parts of a piece of writing, although it also refers to how paragraphs and sentences are written. The flow of a piece of writing affects how readers interpret ideas. If the organization does not provide readers with the information they are looking for in an orderly manner, they will quickly lose interest. Unorganized writing makes readers search for the information they need.
SENTENCE FLUENCY- sentence Fluency refers to the way words and phrases flow through the piece. It is the auditory trait because it’s “read” with the ear as much as the eye.Sentence Fluency is the rhythm and flow of the language, the sound of word patterns, the way in which the writing plays to the ear, not just to the eye.
VOICE- Voice reflects to your attitude about your subject and your readers. Voice is who the readers hear talking in your paper
WRITING SKILL- Writing skills include all the knowledge and abilities related to expressing ideas through the written word. The ability to clearly communicate ideas through writing is in high demand for employers in any industry.
WORD CHOICE - Word Choice refers to the specific vocabulary the writer uses to convey meaning and enlighten the reader.
