Task-Based Language Teaching, an analytic approach focusing on form, with a task-based syllabus starting with output and putting emphasis on learning outcomes, may have a positive impact on the development of learnersâ language proficiency and thinking skills in L2 classrooms. By implementing a TBLT approach which is free from the limitation of synthetic approach focusing on forms and analytic approach focusing on meaning, L2 learners can benefit from its efficiency promoting both in communication competence and linguistic awareness. In addition to the advantage of TBLT approaches, a task-based syllabus, as one of the typical backward design, focusing on output or learning outcomes, are more effective in enhancing learnersâ language proficiency than that in other syllabuses focusing on input or process. Moreover, learnersâ thinking skills can be achieved in a task-based syllabus integrating language proficiency with thinking skill tasks.

To date, numerous books and research articles have focused on the notion of syllabus design
and curriculum development. Nevertheless, very few works have had an inclusive and concise
look upon the issue. This paper is an account of current trends on syllabus design and
curriculum development in Second Language Acquisition in the recent past decades. This is
hopefully intended to offer a descriptive and critical interpretation of the existing syllabuses in
the domain of language learning and teaching. After a brief introductory remark on
curriculum and syllabus types, 13 of the most prominent syllabuses in SLA will be elaborated
on separately. In pursuit of doing so, definition, rationale, merits, and drawbacks attributed to
each syllabus will be touched upon. Although the emergence of some of these syllabi
coincides with each other, while presenting them, it has been tried to follow a roughly
chronological order of their emergence.

Towards Logic Programming as a Service: Experiments in tuPrologAndrea Omicini
Â
In this talk we explore the perspective of Logic Programming as a Service (LPaaS), with a broad notion of âserviceâ going beyond the mere handling of the logic engine lifecycle, knowledge base management, reasoning queries execution, etc. In particular, we present tuProlog as-a-service, a Prolog engine based on the tuProlog core made available as an encapsulated service to effectively support the spreading of intelligence in pervasive systemsâmainly, Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications scenarios. So, after recalling the main features of tuProlog technology, we discuss the design and implementation of tuProlog as-a-service, focussing in particular on the iOS platform because of the many supported smart devices (phones, watches, etc.), the URL-based communication support among apps, and the multi-language resulting scenarios.
Game Engines to Model MAS: A Research RoadmapAndrea Omicini
Â
Game engines are gaining increasing popularity in various computational research areas, and in particular in the context of Multi-Agent Systems (MAS)âfor instance, to render augmented reality environments, improve immersive simulation infrastructures, and so on. Existing examples of successful integration between game engines and MAS still focus on specific technology-level goals, rather than on shaping a general-purpose game-based agent-oriented infrastructure. In this roadmap talk, we point out the conceptual issues to be faced to exploit game engines as agent-oriented infrastructures, and outline a possible research roadmap to follow, backed up by some early experiments involving the Unity3D engine.

This paper provides an overview of Task-Based Language Learning (TBL) and its use in the teach ing
and learning of foreign languages. It begins by defining the concept of TBL, followed by a presentation
of its framework and implications, and finally, a lesson plan based on TBL. The article presents an additional
stage to be considered when planning a task-based lesson: the one of formal and informal assessment.
The rubrics and a self-evaluation format appear as an additional constituent of any task cycle.
Key words: Task-based learning, framework, teach ersâ roles, studentsâ role.
This document is highly relevant for the people aspiring to learn about research-based practices in higher education, writing a piece for academic discourses and also learning to use proper style guidelines as well as performing citation and referencing in line with APA style guidelines.
Good English writing competence is widely recognized as an important skill for educational, business and personal reasons. So, English writing instruction has an important role in foreign language education. In this regard, extracted and edited from his MA thesis, the purpose of the researcher in this study was to decide on the degree of emphasis on micro skills for writing classes based on the frequency of error occurrence. The first step for carrying out the research was to analyze the essays of a pilot group (i. e., 30 students) to provide the researcher with a rough checklist of the most frequent types of errors. Then the researcher administered the instrument to a random sample of university students' essays that were majoring in TEFL, Literature and translation in Islamic Azad University, Roudehen Branch. The analysis of the sample obtained 13 types of errors and the researcher applied the obtained checklist to categorize the errors committed by all 300 subjects of the research. To do this the researcher used descriptive and qualitative method to gather the research data without manipulating the research context. Based on the occurrences of errors, the researcher presented a hierarchy of error types and suggested some strategies in the process of pre-writing, writing and post-writing.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as âdistorted thinkingâ.
Operation âBlue Starâ is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Opportunities in launching a pilot Writing Center as an institutional initiative
Elizabeth NarvĂĄez Cardona
Department of Language
Faculty of Social Communication
Writing centers in Colombian higher
education
These initiatives belong to private
universities located in the capital of the
country, BogotĂĄ D.C. (# 1 # 3), Santiago de
Cali (# 2), and Barranquilla (# 4).
Daily-life of writing centers
In analyzing the websites of the writing
centers # 1 and # 3, I have identified
preliminary answers upon what is the daily life
of a writing center1.
Writing center counts as a university
site in which the students could ask for free
writing tutoring to succeed in their programs.
In doing so, the student can set an
appointment with someone called âtutorâ to
receive assistance in accomplishing their
writing assignments. This tutor will be a
graduate student. During the appointment

in the Teaching of the English Language Arts. New

the tutor interacts with the students and not
with their texts. The students should bring to
the appointments, the instructors´ prompts
and the actual texts written as part of their
writing assignments.
Furthermore, the analysis2 reveals that
in these institutional sites, writing is conceived
mostly to support writing assignments to fulfill
faculty expectations regardless the disciplines.
Therefore, students are provided by guidelines
offered by the websites to support, among
other issues:
Citation strategies.
Strategies to understand and
decipher the instructorsâ expectations
with the writing assignments.
Strategies to incorporate language
instructor patterns and specific
discourse style into writing
assignments.

A student could also
come to a tutoring
session without having
written a paper yet,
but still get help by
discuss ideas and
creating an outline of
what they intend
writing
A tutor could also help students with learning
new writing or reading strategies, or how to
respond to a professorâs feedback, or how to
write documents or writing assignments that
they have not written before.
2. 2
Our imagined writing centerâŚ
âŚwould undertake other types of writing
not addressed in our first year composition
courses
The current freshman composition courses
led by the Department of Language for the
Faculties of Social Communication,
Economics and Business help students to
explore and understand the new demands of
reading and writing for their first semester.
Accordingly, essays, research reports, and oral
communications are used as type of
documents that students will have to write in
accomplishing their first semester assignments.
In the case of Faculty in Engineering, a 19-
hour workshop is offered as part of the
professional course âIntroduction to
Engineering 1â. This workshop aims at
providing students with guidance to select
and analyze secondary resources to build an
innovative project, developed as part of the
course âIntroduction to engineering 1â, and to
write the final report for the professor.
Consequently, our department already
knows that in our University students and
faculty members write or ask for essays,
research reports, oral communications, and
project reports. However, we can also learn
what, when, and how other types of
documents are produced by the students in
their programs and fields as part of their
specific professional or disciplinary growth
(e.g., research reports, case-study reports, lab
reports, and posters).
âŚwould support in learning of writing and
communication patterns of the disciplines
Writing studies research3 has
confirmed that when students can fulfill our
expectations in writing assignments, this might
be associated with the studentsâ abilities to

use knowledge learned in other time and
spaces to face with the new situations
proposed by professors. This ability of students
might be boosted either i) by their own
motivations and learning strategies, or ii) by
specific teaching experiences in which the
specific contents and formats of the
disciplines are learned as part of developing
professional or disciplinary identities.
For instance, if engineering students
are exposed and taught explicitly over time
about the writing and communicative
features of lab reports, they not only become
familiarized with the patterns of a professional
communicative practice but also become
aware of the differences of such patterns in
contrast to other writing and communicative
situations, as poster or oral communication in
conferences addressing novice researchers.
Systematic teaching experiences can stabilize
our knowledge and increase the probability to
write lab reports in new situations. Over time,
when we are able to face new writing and
communicative situations using our stable
prior knowledge, we can acknowledge what
we have learned4.
Accordingly, the following proposal of a pilot
writing center aims at addressing students and
leading faculty development programs for a
discipline during the first year to support
students´ writing in the center while
developing, along with faculty members,
other curriculum opportunities.
Affording our writing center
Our teaching team
In 2012, 31% out of the total of
professors in the Department of Language
taught the writing 19-hour workshop in
Engineering. The total of these professors were
hired by hour every semester (19 week long).
Moreover, 40% of the teaching team is in
charge of the composition freshman courses
in the Faculty of Social Communication, and
36% for the same courses in the Faculty of
Economics and Business.
Based on the historical tracking report
of the teaching team, currently, out of 7
tenured professors in the Department, 4 have
gained experiences as specialized instructors

for freshman courses in different disciplines.
This means that developing the curriculum for
the courses has been mostly in charge of
these 4 professors. Consequently, affording a
writing center targeting students and faculty
population of all the faculties and aiming at
supporting the differences of the disciplines
might not be realistic, mostly because the 4
tenured faculty members are also in charge of
the research, publish, and outreach projects.
Delimiting a disciplinary scope and learning
moments
Given that our Departmental mission
acknowledges the role â(âŚ) of discursive
competences as essential conditions for
professional achievement in all disciplinesâ,
the writing center might start as a pilot
experience addressing a discipline.
Additionally, because the department offers a
workshop in the Faculty of Engineering instead
an autonomous course as in the other
faculties, the pilot writing center might address
students and faculty members of Engineering
during the freshman year to strengthen our
presence with that Faculty while we boost
developing an autonomous course.
In developing this pilot writing center,
composition faculty could learn about
disciplinary writing in Engineering through
conducting a research project from which the
writing center scopes will be delimited.
Accordingly, the pilot writing center will be a
project with two stages. The first stage is
described as follows.
