3. ABSTRACT
Shortage of water in Kathmandu valley have increased steadily for several years. The daily water
demand for Kathmanndu valley is more than 360 million litres per day whereas the supply is
around 90 million litres per day in dry season and 140 million per litres per day in wet season
according to the website of Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited(KUKL).If we talk about
ground water, its extraction started since 1970’s in the Kathmandu Valley and since then the
extraction has been increasing at an alarming rate.Ground water experts state if the water is
pumped at the similar rate, there will be no ground water at all after around 100 years.Researched
data shows that more than 80% of tap water(primary source of water in the most of households
of Kathmandu valley) were found to be infected with e-coil bacteria making it unsuitable for
drinking directly but even many peoples are drinking it directly. The key problem is identified in
ground water(well and boring) were contaminated with iron and turbidity, making it unsuitable
for drinking. So,Ministry of water supply has been working on Melamchi water supply project
with the objectives to alleviate this shortage ona sustainable and long term basis-improve the
health and well being of the people in the valley. Our main aim is to study on the process of water
treatment plant which is installed in Sundarijal,Water supplying capacity etc.

5. INTRODUCTION
Water Supply is a process of supplying water usually including reservoirs, tunnels and pipelines
.A water supply typically includes:
A raw water collection point where the water accumulates, such as lakes, rivers or ground water
from an underground water acquifer .Raw water may be transferred using uncovered ground
level aqueducts, covered tunnel or underground water pipes to water purification facilities. Water
Treatment plant is any process that improves the quality of water to make it more acceptable for
a specific end-use. The end-use may be drinking ,Industrial water supply etc.

6. Treated water is transferred using water pipes.Water storage facilities such as reservoirs, water
tanks or water towers.Smaller water systems may store the water in cisterns.A pipe network for
distribution of water to the consumers. The proposed review will discuss the amount of water
supplied and process of water treatment plant. The survey will be carried on sundarijal where the
supplied water is treated through water treatment plant. This proposal includes our methods for
gathering information and a schedule for completing the review.
OBJECTIVES
The overall objective is to study about water supply system. Main objectives of this proposed
review are listed as below:
To know the process of water treatment.
To know the amount of water treated and supplied.
To have knowledge about the government steps and action to improve the quality of drinking
water.
LOCATION OF VISITING AREA(STUDY AREA)
The survey will be carried on sundarijal where the supplied water is treated through water
treatment plant which is located at a distance of 22.9km from Sanepa to our study area.

7. METHODOLOGY
This Section highlights our method of collecting informations and data.In order to collect the
necessary data, the following methods are applied:
A)Primary Methods:
(i)Visiting the site carefully and observing various element such as water treatment
plant, reservoirs and supply of the water through the tunnel and underground water pipes.
(ii) Interviewing with some local people and experts opinion for the collection of information.
B)Secondary Methods:
(i)Reading news article, books, articles and searching on internet in order to collect all the
necessary information and data.
