PROPER KITCHEN
SAFETY

 Focus on what you are doing
 Dress for safety!
 Use all tools and equipment safely
 Close drawers and doors
 Control CLUTTER!!!
Preventing Falls
 Remove hazards that could cause trips and
slips!
 Keep floor clean and clear of clutter
 When reaching high things, use a STURDY
step stool!
Knife Safety
 Store in a divided drawer or some kind of knife
rack/block
 Pick them up by the handle, not the blade!
 Learn the different types of knives and how to
use them
 Be careful when cleaning them!
Sharp things!
 Graters, peelers, chopping tools, mixers, can
lids=all require caution!
Preventing Fires and Burns
 Use cookware that is in good condition
 Inspect cookware before use for cracks and
fractures
 Handle cookware with dry potholders or oven
mitts!
 Keep flammable items away from heat and
flame!!
Oven Safety
 Arrange oven racks as you want them
BEFORE you turn on the oven
 Stand to one side when you open an oven
 Use a potholder or oven mitt to remove
cookware from an oven
 Turn oven and broiler off immediately after use
 Clean up spills and crumbs 
Cord Safety
 Check cords for damage before use
 Do NOT staple or nail cords in place
 Limit the number of cords in an outlet
Appliance Safety
 Read owners manual!
 Never put your fingers in an appliance that is
plugged in!
 Unplug a mixer before removing the beaters
Chemical Safety
 Read label before buying!
 Keep hazardous products in original
containers!
 Follow ALL directions!
 Never mix chemicals!
 Make sure nozzle is pointed AWAY from
people!
