1. Adventist Education; Its Scope, Its
Aims, and Its Sources:
• The distinctive characteristics of Adventist
education, derived from the Bible and the
writings of Ellen G. White, point to the
redemptive aim of true education – to
restore human beings into the image of
their maker – mentally, socially, spiritually,
and physically… Should this vision of
mission be lost, there would be no reason
for our school to exist. (General
Conference Working Policy).
2. • This wholistic context for learning prepares them for life
here on earth and for eternity. This is higher-order
knowledge, interpreted in the light of God’s word.
• Adventist institutions, developed within this framework,
served as “Redemptive-Oriented School of Excellence
(ROSE).”
a ROSE because the students graduating from this
school should come out smelling like one.
(THE JOURNAL OF Adventist Education, 2004,p.3).
3. • Key text; Psalms 127:1-4;
“Except the Lord build the house, they
labor in vain that build it: except the Lord
keep the city, the watchman waketh but in
vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit
up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so
he giveth his beloved sleep. Lo children
are a heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of
the womb is his reward.
4. • Central Thoughts;
• Schools were intended to serve as a barrier
against the wide-spreading corruption, to
provide for the mental and spiritual welfare of
the youth, and to promote the prosperity of the
nation by furnishing it with men and women
qualified to act in the fear of God as leaders and
counselors (Education, by Ellen G. White, p.46).
5. • Matt.13:44; The Parable of the hidden
treasure;
* Again the kingdom of heaven is like
unto treasure hid in a field; the which when
a man hath found, he hideth , and for joy
thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath
and buyeth the field.
6. • The Scope of Adventist Education;
• True education means more than the
pursual of a certain course of study. Its
means more than a preparation for the life
that now is. It has to do with the whole
being, and with the whole period of
existence possible to man. It is the
harmonious development of the physical,
the mental, and the spiritual power.
7. • It prepares the student for the joy of service in
this world and for the higher joy of wider service
in the world to come.
(ED. p.13).
* In the highest sense the work of education and
the work of redemption are one, for in education,
as in redemption, “other foundation can no man
lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1Cor.
3:11).
(ED. P.13).
8. • Aims of Adventist Education;
• It prepares the student for the joy of service in this world
and for the higher joy of wider service in the world to
come.
(ED.p.13).
* To restore in man the image of his maker, to bring him
back to the perfection in which he was created, to
promote the development of body, mind, and soul, that
the Divine purpose in His creation might be realized –
this was to be the work of redemption. This is the object
of education, the greatest object of life (ED.pp.15,16).
9. • True education does not ignore the value
of scientific knowledge or literary
acquirements; but above information it
values power; above power, goodness;
above intellectual acquirements, character.
The world does not so much need men of
great intellect as of noble character. It
needs men in whom ability is controlled by
steadfast principle (ED.p.225).
10. • The greatest want of the world is the want
of men- men who will not be bought or
sold, men who in their inmost souls are
true and honest, men who do not fear to
call sin by its right name, men whose
conscience is as true to duty as the needle
to the pole, men who will stand for the
right though the heavens fall (ED.p.57).
11. • The Sources of Adventist Education;
• The Holy Scriptures are the perfect standard of
truth, and as such should be given the highest
place in education (ED.p.17).
• John 14: 26, “But the comforter, which is the
Holy Ghost, whom the father will send in my
name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all
things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have
said unto you”.
12. • Col. 2:3, “In whom (God) are hid all the
treasures of wisdom and knowledge”.
• Job 12:13, “With Him is wisdom and
strength, he hath hath counsel and
understanding”.
• Christ, “the greatest educator this world
has ever known (ED.p.85).
• The word of God is the most perfect
educational book in our world (FE.p.194)
13. • Matt.5:3-11, The Beatitudes;
* Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.
* Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be
comforted.
* Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the
earth.
* Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst
after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
14. * Blessed are the merciful: for they shall
obtain mercy.
* Blessed are the pure in heart: for they
shall see God.
* Blessed are the peacemakers: for they
shall be called the children of God.
* Blessed are they which are persecuted
for righteousness sake: for theirs the
kingdom of heaven.
15. * Blessed are ye, when men shall revile
you, and persecute you, and shall say all
manner of evil against you falsely, for my
name sake.
* Rejoice and be exceeding glad: for great
is your reward in heaven….
16. • Matt.5:13; The salt of the Earth
* Jesus said, “Ye are the salt of the
earth: but if the salt have lost his savor,
wherewith shall it be salted? It is
henceforth good for nothing, but to be cast
out, and to be trodden ,under foot of men”.
17. • Matt.5:14-16; The Light of the world;
* Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the
world, A city that is set on a hill cannot be
hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put
it under the bushel, but on a candle stick;
and it giveth light unto all that are in the
house. Let your light so shine before men,
that they may see your good works, and
glorify your father which is in heaven”.
18. • The greatest aim of the teacher should be
the perfecting of christian character in
himself and in his students. Teacher let
your lamp trimmed and burning, and they
will not only be lights to your students, but
will send out clear and distinct rays to the
home and neighborhoods where your
students live, and far beyond into the
moral darkness of the world (CT.p.68).
