- 1. 0 WAPS4 is anonprofit organization that wants to bring together all people of the world to help create a cleaner environment by providing the knowledge everyone needs to better the life of the world and future generations. This project has many inventions that can help supply clean water and energy to every country as well as help create jobs and better food sources. - 2. 1 CONSIDER WAPS4 GREEN ENERGYPROJECT HISTORY The idea of this project was brought about by a man named, Yaser Barakat. He lived in a world of love, war, and hate with overbearing fresh water shortage and limited food supply. The Gaza strip, where he lived, once flourished with life and life’s pleasures that later was taken by war which brought hunger and water shortage. He moved to America under occupation by Israel. He is an inventor, artist, and musician. He is looking to help the world for future generations so that people can live a better life. LOSING WATER People generally do not want to do much of anything to prevent something from happening, but once something happens people want to take action and by then it’s too late. Our water supply is quickly diminishing. We have many lakes and rivers that are becoming polluted and the underground water supply called the “Ogallala Aquifer” is quickly depleting. 2.6 billion people lack adequate sanitation and 1.1 billion live without clean drinking water period. 75% of the planet is water but only three percent of water is fresh. In Central Asia the Aril Sea or “Sea of Islands” 1,534 islands once existed now it is down 10% of its original size. In Central and South Asia water sources are so low that a bill was passed called “Avoiding Water Wars.” Water shortage has already caused aggravated demand for agriculture and power generation. According to FutureMoneyTrends.com some places in Africa so much water has been pulled out of the ecosystem in order to bottle it and send it around the world and because of that some towns became desserts. In the U.S. the largest body of freshwater, called the Ogallala Aquifer, extends from the Colorado Rockies and South Dakota down to the Texas Pan Handle with a 50 to 300 ft. of depth. This body of water made America’s plains the breadbasket of the world. The average depth was about 240 ft. today it is now 80 ft. - 3. 2 completely ran outof water for its farms. The average depth there ran from 0-80 ft. The USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) reports, “The supply is going to run out and the plains will become uneconomical to farm.” The USDA gives our water supply 60 years. We built cities and farms on something that is unsustainable. FutureMoneyTrends.com states they have no doubt this has a tie to rising food prices. The Colorado River used to run into the Pacific Ocean, but not anymore. By the time the water is pulled to fill the pools of Vegas, irrigates, and provides drinking water throughout the West, not a drop makes it to the ocean. In California according to NASA four years of drought and record-setting high temperatures have combined to drop California’s reservoirs to critically low levels to where an estimated one year is left. Therefore the Colorado River does end in California and doesn’t make it to the Ocean. According to the consulting company, Mckinsey & Company, “In just 20 years, this report shows demands for water will be 40% higher than it is today. There is already a few solutions to obtaining clean water but are these solutions temporary or safe? One solution is a desalinization plant. It cost too much for a desalinization plant. It make about 50 million gallon per day which supplies 112 thousand households of water for a year. It isn’t a perfect process because it only converts 50 percent of salt water into fresh water so for every two gallons it makes one gallon of fresh water. The bad part to making all this fresh water is that it leaves behind a substance called brine, which is nothing but the salt and minerals left over. Brine cannot be dumped directly back into the ocean because it is so dense it will kill all vegetation and sea life it encounters. To get rid of the brine it is diluted in more ocean water and spread over a wide area of the ocean which is another costly process. PAYING TOO MUCH FOR ENERGY? There are many desalinization plants that use many different kinds of energy: coal, nuclear, natural gas, or oil. These plants cost so much money to sustain because it takes so much power to operate. For the average desalinization plant, it takes 2 kilowatt hours of energy to produce 1 cubic meter of fresh water. Although that translates to a cost of under $2 on many power grids, the true cost of production comes from the expenditures of fossil fuels that are necessary to create that electricity. The desalinization plant has to be paired with a power plant. Power plants use enormous amounts of water to cool all the components that it takes to make the power so the water that is pulled from the ocean and evaporated by the power plant which wastes water. Power plants use a lot of power to create power so they pass large amounts of greenhouse gasses amongst other bad side effects. Energy investors figure out how much they need to spend on a new utility, power plant, or desalinization plant based on the expected return over the next 30 years, but there is no way that could be properly calculated. The power plant also costs half a billion to 2-4 billion to build. Power plants are being replaced by distributed solar systems which can be paired with desalinization plants but there are a few problems with that. The solar power is not as strong as a power
- 4. 3 plant so toget the same effective results of clean water the water would have to be cycled through a few more times than it would if it were to be a regular power plant. The materials to create solar panels are exotic materials which certain solar cells require materials that are expensive and rare in nature. The production of these solar panels are associated with pollution because some of the manufacturing processes are associated with greenhouse gases such as nitrogen trifluroide and sulfur hexafluoride. Energy storage is also expensive and takes up lots of space. In the end solar energy is not comparable to oil, gas, and nuclear power. SOLUTION The solution to the power and water crisis is an invention called WAPS1. WAPS1 is a hydroelectric reservoir that within is installed thousands of turbines to create energy. The more energy that is needed the more turbines can be installed. These turbines are called farm of water turbines. The reservoir can be placed inland or anywhere it is needed. If it is to be placed inland than a pipeline or canal should be built for easy water access. WAPS1 would benefit the desalinization plant because it can provide an abundance amount of cheap power. This cheap power is strong and will never run short like solar and wind power. This power is cheaper than other fossil fuels and natural gases because it is abundant, self-sustaining, and clean. This will reduce the cost of making water thus reducing the cost of irrigating lands and food prices. Poor countries will then be able to afford the desalinization plant because the cost will drop dramatically. WAPS1 does not only provide power to the desalinization plants but also to cities. The size of this plant will take up only enough room for a football field. This project will provide many jobs and the idea is solid. The reservoir will also sustain a fish farm for easy access to fish. Sand will be put around it to keep it safe from earthquakes to prevent much damage. With all the brine that desalinization plants leave behind instead of letting them put it back into the ocean we will turn it into ways of helping people by using it. Instead of the Dead Sea being between Jerusalem and Jordan, we can make it here in America making man-made lakes with it to provide people with the same healing and skin rejuvenating power without the travel. We can make salt caves that helps people with asthma breath better. We can also use the salt in swimming pools instead of using harsh chemicals. OTHER IDEAS There are many more ideas in this project. One idea relates to peace. Another idea is about extraction of carbon dioxide from the air. Another idea is about improving indoor air quality. All these ideas are followed by inventions. Our organization sells t-shirts, art, and posters to get people to support our inventions so we can make it a reality.
