National Suicide Prevention Week aims to raise awareness about suicide. In 2009, there were over 36,000 suicides in the US, with a rate of 12 per 100,000 people. Over 90% of suicide deaths involved at least one psychiatric illness such as depression or substance abuse. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students, with projections of around 1,100 suicides on campuses this year. Treatment is effective for most depression cases.
