Introduction
• The cooling performance of a building refers to its ability to
effectively provide cooling and maintain comfortable indoor
conditions during hot weather. It involves several factors that
influence the overall cooling efficiency and effectiveness of the
building's cooling system.
• The performance of these cooling systems directly impacts
energy consumption, occupant satisfaction, and overall building
efficiency.
• Inefficient cooling system account for about 40% of energy use
in commercial buildings and 60% in residential buildings.(US
Department of Energy, 2015). Hence there is a need for us to
study the performance of the cooling system and to take
necessary actions to minimize the energy consumption.
Technology towards
• The existing cooling system has several drawbacks such as
high energy consumption, maintenance challenges and
environmental impacts.
• Thus, to address to the above mentioned drawbacks it is
essential for us to assess the cooling performance of the
cooling system.
Problem Statement
Technology towards
1. What is the overall cooling performance of the current cooling
system under normal conditions?
2. How does the cooling system's performance vary under
different environmental conditions (e.g., temperature,
humidity)?
3. How does the cooling system perform in terms of energy
efficiency and power consumption?
4. Study and identify the factors contributing to the inefficient
cooling system.
Research Questions
Technology towards
Aims: To assess the cooling performance of the cooling system
to minimize the energy consumption and environmental impact.
Objective:
 To design and simulate energy efficient cooling system.
 To identify the factors that contribute to inefficient cooling
system performance.

Approach
Modeling and simulation: Sketch up and Open studio
Data Collection Methods
1. Collection of weather data: Weather station in Dewathang and
NCHM.
2. Modeling and simulation: Use sketch up and open studio to
model and then simulate to analyze the cooling performance
of the cooling system.
Methodology
Technology towards
Sketch up
• SketchUp is a suite of subscription products that include
SketchUp Pro Desktop, a 3D modeling Computer-Aided Design
(CAD) program for a broad range of drawing and design
applications — including architectural, interior design, industrial
and product design, landscape architecture, civil and
mechanical engineering, theater, film and video game
development.
About the software
Technology towards
Open studio
• Open-Studio is an open-source software development kit and
graphical user interface for energy modeling and analysis of
building designs. It enables users to create detailed building
energy models, simulate energy consumption, and evaluate
energy efficiency measures.
• It supports building geometry creation, HVAC system modeling,
energy analysis using Energy-Plus, evaluation of energy
efficiency measures, parametric analysis, and results
visualization. Open-Studio is freely available and widely used to
promote energy-efficient building design and operation.

Expected Outcome
Assess the cooling performance of the cooling system and then
to identify the factors contributing to the inefficient cooling
system.
• Overcome variables that contribute to inefficient cooling system:
i. Energy consumption: Help provide estimates of energy
consumption for cooling demands and performance across
different seasons.
ii. Occupant comfort: Provide estimates of thermal comfort
and other factors that influence occupant satisfaction, such
as air quality and noise levels.
Result and Discussion
Technology towards
Significance of the Project
 Environmental sustainability: By optimizing the design and
operation of cooling system, the research could help reduce
energy consumption and the impacts on climate change.
 Economic benefits: By improving the energy efficiency of
cooling systems, it will help reduce the operational costs of
buildings. Additionally, optimizing cooling system designs and
operation strategies could lead to increased equipment lifetimes
and reduced maintenance costs.
Result and Discussion
Technology towards
The challenges that we are likely to face when doing this project
are :
1.Data availability: Accurate and comprehensive weather data is
not easily available.
2.Limited features of Simulation software
3.System Interactions: Cooling systems often interact with other
systems or environmental factors. Accounting for these
interactions and their impact on cooling performance analysis
can be challenging.
Challenges
Technology towards
4. Seasonal Variations: Cooling demands and performance can
vary significantly across different seasons. Analyzing cooling
performance needs to consider the seasonal variations in
weather conditions, load profiles, and energy requirements.

Technology towards Expected Outcome Assess the cooling performance of the cooling system and then to identify the factors contributing to the inefficient cooling system. • Overcome variables that contribute to inefficient cooling system: i. Energy consumption: Help provide estimates of energy consumption for cooling demands and performance across different seasons. ii. Occupant comfort: Provide estimates of thermal comfort and other factors that influence occupant satisfaction, such as air quality and noise levels. Result and Discussion
  • 16. Technology towards Significance of the Project  Environmental sustainability: By optimizing the design and operation of cooling system, the research could help reduce energy consumption and the impacts on climate change.  Economic benefits: By improving the energy efficiency of cooling systems, it will help reduce the operational costs of buildings. Additionally, optimizing cooling system designs and operation strategies could lead to increased equipment lifetimes and reduced maintenance costs. Result and Discussion
  • 17. Technology towards The challenges that we are likely to face when doing this project are : 1.Data availability: Accurate and comprehensive weather data is not easily available. 2.Limited features of Simulation software 3.System Interactions: Cooling systems often interact with other systems or environmental factors. Accounting for these interactions and their impact on cooling performance analysis can be challenging. Challenges
  • 18. Technology towards 4. Seasonal Variations: Cooling demands and performance can vary significantly across different seasons. Analyzing cooling performance needs to consider the seasonal variations in weather conditions, load profiles, and energy requirements.
