3. Purpose of the Proposed Work
• Chennai City has been growing rapidly and the traffic on the roads have also been increasing.
• Hence the need for a new rail based rapid transport system and the Government of Tamil Nadu
have decided to implement the Chennai Metro Rail Project.
• This project aims at providing the people of Chennai with a fast, convenient, efficient, modern
and economical mode of public transport, which is properly integrated with other forms of
public and private transport including buses, sub-urban trains and MRTS.
• The Metro Rail System has proven to be most efficient in terms of energy consumption and
numbers transported.

4. • High-capacity carriers – very high volumes of peak hour peak direction trips.
• Eco-friendly – causes no air pollution, much less sound pollution.
• Low energy consumption – 20% per passenger km in comparison to road-based systems.
• Greater traffic capacity – carries as much traffic as 7 lanes of bus traffic or 24 lanes of car traffic
(either way).
• Very low ground space occupation – 2 meter width only for elevated rail.
• Faster – reduces journey time by 50% to 75%.

5. Scope of the project
• Civil Works-Alignment :
1. Carrying out detailed topographic surveys
2. Conducting geotechnical investigations along the corridor alignment.
3. Reviewing the impact of proposed road improvement works along the alignment and
recommended changes, if any needed for proper integration.
• Stations:
1. Stations will be accommodated within R.O.W
2. Station layout will take security threats into consideration.
3. Requirements of water supply and drainage arrangements.
4. Any commercial development is proposed at stations, the same should be included in layouts.

6. • Train Operation Plan: Preparing the train operating plan to manage the projected ridership.
Requirement of rolling stock will be worked out. Design parameters will be finalized in
consultation with Client.
• Traction & Power Supply: Overhead AC traction systems to serve the Train operation Plan
effectively. Consultant shall also provide the sufficient details for power supply arrangements.
• Signaling: Consultants shall propose suitable signaling system i.e. CBTC to serve the Train
operation Plan effectively. The recommended system will be cost-effective.
• Tunnel Ventilation System: Consultant shall propose suitable tunnel ventilation system.
• Cost-estimates:
1. Consultants shall prepare block cost-estimates for all the project elements including taxes and
duties.
2. The details in support of cost-estimates will need to be furnished.
3. The completion cost will be worked out based on phasing of expenditure during construction
and appropriate escalation factor.

7. Beneficiaries of the Work
• Mass Rapid Transit systems such as the Metro Rail facilitate quick, safe and easy mode of
transportation for people and bring economic activities, social equity, and an enhanced quality
of life for the people.
• Owing to the possibility of seamlessly traversing underground, over ground (viaducts) or at-
grade (on surface), the metro rail system connects heavy populated areas with the rest of the
city, thus allowing dissipation of the congestion as people reduce the usage of personal
transport like cars.
• Safety in commutation that the MRTS provides benefits not only women but also other
vulnerable sections such as the elderly and the physically disabled persons.
• All metro projects are expected to provide suitable access arrangements at the stations and
coaches for the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) and separate coaches earmarked for female
commuters. The student population is yet another major beneficiary of the metro.

8. Motivation of our Work
• An average 97,466 people used the metro trains in Chennai for their commute in November
which took the monthly total of 29.2 lakh passengers.
• As more and more people start using the metro rail services, the traffic in this metropolitan city
will go down.
• Research has shown that countries with less traffic is more cleaner than countries with higher
traffic.
• Therefore as a side quest, the government can also achieve its goal of a clean Chennai city.

public transport service preferred by all in a sustainable manner.
• Rapid transit or mass rapid transit (MRT) is a type of high-capacity public transport which is
running also in the underground.
• Metro rails are eco-friendly, cause much less sound pollution, and have no air pollution.
• They are low energy consuming compared to road transport and local trains.
• The traffic problems in Chennai has come down and people using not only reach fast by
avoiding traffic, they also help by maintaining a eco-friendly environment.
