What Is a Project?
• A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken
to accomplish a unique product or service
• Attributes of projects
– unique purpose
– temporary
– require resources
– should have a primary sponsor and/or
customer
– involve uncertainty
4
What is Project Management?
Project management is the application of
knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to
project activities in order to meet project
requirements (PMI)
The Project Management Institute (PMI) is an
international professional society.
Do you know the meaning of ‘management’ in
particular.
What is Project Management?
• What is Project Management?
• Project management is a critical skill set in
today’s world.
• A project is defined as a non-routine, one-
time effort limited by time, resources, and
performance specifications designed to
meet customer needs
5
Objectives of Project Management
• The following are the objective of the
project management:
• To develop and implement the procedures.
• To have collaboration, effective
communication, and productive guidance.
6
Objectives of Project Management
• To achieve the goal of the project within
the estimated time with high quality.
• To optimize and allocate the necessary
resources to meet project goals.
• To meet the exclusive needs and
requirements of the clients.
7
Stages of Project Management
1. Initiation
2. Planning
3. Execution
4. Monitoring and Controlling
5. Closure
8
9
The Triple Constraint
• Every project is constrained in different ways by its
– Scope goals: What is the project trying to
accomplish?
– Time goals: How long should it take to
complete?
– Cost goals: What should it cost?
• It is the project manager’s duty to balance these
three competing goals
10
Why Project is Successful?
The reasons for the increase in
successful projects vary.
–The average cost of a project has been
more than cut in half.
–Better tools have been created to monitor
and control progress
–Better skilled project managers with
better management processes are being
used.
11
Project Stakeholders
• Stakeholders are the people involved in
or affected by project activities
• Stakeholders include:
– the project sponsor and project team
– support staff
– customers
– users
– suppliers
– opponents to the project
12
9 Project Management Knowledge Areas
• Knowledge areas describe the key
competencies that project managers must
develop
1. Scope
2. Time
3. Cost
4. Quality
5. Human Resources
9 Project Management Knowledge
Areas
6. Communication
7. Risk
8. Procurement Management
9. Project Integration Management
13
14
Project Management Tools and
Techniques
• Project management tools and techniques assist
project managers and their teams in various aspects
of project management such as:
– Project Charter, scope statement, and WBS
(work breakdown structure) (scope)
– Network diagrams, critical path analysis, critical
chain scheduling (time)
– Cost estimates and earned value management
(cost)
15
How Project Management Relates to
Other Disciplines
• Much of the knowledge needed to manage
projects is unique to the discipline of project
management
• Project mangers must also have knowledge and
experience in
– general management
– the application area of the project
– should have IT basics
16
History of Project Management
• Some people argue that building the Egyptian
pyramids was a project, as was building the
Great Wall of China
• Most people consider the Manhattan Project to
be the first project to use “modern” project
management
• This three-year, $2 billion (in 1946)
• Project had a separate project manager and a
technical manager
17
Project Management Knowledge
Continues to Grow and Mature
• PMI hosted their first research
conference in June 2000 in Paris,
France, and the second one in Seattle
in July 2002
• Hundreds of new books, articles, and
presentations related to project
management have been written in
recent years
8 Main Functions of Project
Management
1. Scoping
• The scoping function is an activity that covers
the boundaries of the realm of work that must be
done so that the project is completed.
2. Planning
• The planning function is the activity of
identifying the desired project objectives and
allocating the necessary resources
18
8 Main Functions of Project
Management
3. Estimating
• The estimating function is part of a form of
project planning whose activities include
quantitative estimates of the project.
4. Scheduling
• The scheduling function is the activity of
compiling a list of activities that includes the
start and finish time of each job
19
8 Main Functions of Project
Management
5. Organizing
• The organizing function is an activity to confirm
or ensure that all team members are fully aware
of their respective roles, responsibilities, and
their relationship with you as the project
manager.
• This is the most detailed function of any project
20
8 Main Functions of Project
Management
6. Directing
• The directing function centers on the leadership
style of a project.
• This directing activity includes instructing,
mentoring, and training team and
communication in order to achieve the project
goals.
21
8 Main Functions of Project
Management
7. Controlling
• The controlling function is the activity of
controlling all work that takes place in the
project so that it goes according to plan or does
not deviate.
• The project manager will use the standard
measurement matrix to monitor each ongoing
activity
22
8 Main Functions of Project
Management
8. Closing
• The closing function is an activity of evaluating
and scoring the final results of projects that have
ended.
• This is the last function of each planned and
well organized project.
• All stakeholders of the project will see the final
result from the program
23
24
Project Management Certification
• PMI provides certification as a Project
Management Professional (PMP)
• A PMP has documented sufficient project
experience, agreed to follow a code of ethics,
and passed the PMP exam
• The number of people earning PMP certification
is increasing quickly
• PMI and other organizations are offering new
certification programs
25
Ethics in Project Management
• Ethics is an important part of all
professions
• Project managers often face ethical
dilemmas
• In order to earn PMP certification,
applicants must agree to the PMP code of
professional conduct
Introduction to Project Management
• Any questions?
