Editor's Notes
Welcome to the Budvietas.Com systemic approach to solution development, the best way to achieve solutions: On time First time Every time!
Before getting into the whole approach, there’s a couple of questions I’d like to ask. First, “What do YOU want?”. As a professional, you want to get paid. Not only to get paid, but to generate more work along the same lines for you and your business. To get paid, you need to satisfy your users. They’re the ones who will use your system. If they are not satisfied with what it does, they very likely won’t use your services again. If they are satisfied, there’s no guarantee that they will use you again, but only time will tell.
What do your users want? When all is said and done, they want something that works well enough. Bells and whistles are fine, but the system has to do what they need it to do. And, as the title puts it: delivered on time, working first time, effectively straight out of the box, and every time – no problems that strike when least expected that they can control.
So, can a professional do this? They should be able to – after all they ARE professionals! Based on what users – the people who PAY for the solutions – say, their experience is that the usual way involves…
The first way: Throw more resources at the problem area. What resources? Time is based on people, so more people should get the work done faster More software and hardware: faster, more gui approaches, more of anything that will get the result that the user may or may not want.
Can putting in the extra resources get the right result? It can. In fact, sometimes, it is the only way to get something to satisfy the user. If you can afford the time and money – the extra resources – it can be a valid approach to whatever problems you are having. But, experience suggests that what really happens is…
Of course, it might never be this bad, but you get the idea – extra resources are seldom the solution to a systemic problem when it comes to user satisfaction.
The better way is the “On-time, First-time, every-time” systemic approach. Is it Workable? 50 plus years of using it says it is. Is it Manageable? Yes, because the steps are very clear all the way through. Is it Consistent? The approach tends to generate a language that both users and developers understand, and the user knows what the end result will be like. Is it Duplicatable? I’ve taught the methodology to others, and they get very similar levels of satisfaction with their users. Is it Cost effective? If the users get what they need at a price they are willing to pay, the suppliers get their profits and everyone feels they got the best bargain possible, it has to be cost effective!
Where did the concept of P.L.A.N come from? From many different places. When you work in the I.T. industry, you learn very quickly that you never really start with nothing. You have years of other people’s experiences to draw on, as well as your own. Like: Engineering. Engineers seldom waste time. So their first rule of thumb is: “ DON’T re-invent the wheel!” More often than not, someone has run into the same problem, or a variation on it. So, the first thing is to look for the ‘wheel’ that fits best into what you need to get done. Only if you can’t find such a wheel do you start making something that is truly original. Where do you look? Nature is a good place to start. Did you know that something like 99.999999% of solutions have an equivalent in nature? Once you’ve found it, then, if it works, beg, borrow or steal it. Remember that IDEAS can’t be copyrighted or patented – they’re in the public domain. It’s only the EXPRESSION of the idea that might be someone else’s intellectual property. Test your own expression of the idea. If it doesn’t work, then it’s far cheaper to give up and look for a better solution before you develop it into a full-blown solution for your clients or yourself!
Yes, TM and Scientology are great places to find ideas. No, it’s not about the semi-religious aspects of these. However, if you look closely at the underpinnings of these, you’ll find that they have done exactly what engineers have done – they found something that works, and adapted the ‘wheel’ into something that is the core of their philosophy. Like TM’s Mantra – it starts with the old “Om Mane Padme Hum!”. Whatever it means, it helps the meditator focus on something outside the ordinary. Often, the mantra – the sounds that are constantly repeated – is associated with a mandala – a picture that becomes meaningful to the meditator. Start with putting our “mandala” into your daily usage, and keep repeating the words On Time – First Time – Every Time. Use it when you start any new problem, any new search for a solution. It will help clear your mind, and keep you focussed on getting the results. It might feel ‘stupid’ at the beginning, but, when you start to see the desirable results, it will become part of your ‘ritual’ in being the best solution finder you can be.
Much of P.L.A.N. comes form experience. Not the academic learning kind, but the stuff that happens in real life. Of course, I put “me” first, but the people who helped me – my mentors – had similar ideas. So, I took them, and devloped them into something that combines the best of many people, from managers in retail stores, through systems analysis and project management, into training and documentation. And, despite a few failures, which had reasons not directly related to delivering solutions, the results have been extremely positive. In other words, the approach WORKED!
Will it work for YOU? That’s the most critical aspect of any methodology. So far, we have not come across people who could not adapt it to their needs. These are people in I.T., Engineering, Business, Training, Developing courses, Developing presentations, Setting up Web sites and web pages, Designing databases. Logistics, Marketing, Personal Effectiveness trainingand a lot more. Think about it: the first step is to keep the Mantra (and mandala) in front of you every day. Focus on getting results
Start to see the relationship: P.L.A.N. is about getting results On Time, First Time, Every Time. It can change your business and even your life. But only if you use it. And what does it bring you? Well….
Fame, Glory, Rewards, Awards…. They’re not always visible, but they are there. Become an “On Time, First Time, Every Time” afficionado. Make it part of your life. Let us help you help yourself to what you deserve to get in Life.
