This document discusses integrating project portfolio management (PPM) and business process improvement (BPI). It describes how BPI can be used at different stages of the project lifecycle, including investigating problems, establishing baselines, and deciding on solutions at the start of projects (HEAD). Tools like cause-and-effect diagrams, activity-based costing, and decision trees are presented as ways to analyze problems and options. The document also provides a case study example of how BPI could be applied to a project aimed at improving customer satisfaction in a reception area by identifying issues, gathering baseline data, and evaluating options like a queue management system or adding staff.
Working with MOSES and building high quality MT systems is not for the faint hearted. It requires a wide range of technical and linguistic based knowledge that is often difficult to find and develop within organisations. Consequently, only the biggest organisations have the financial muscle to invest and reap the awards of MT. This puts the small-to-medium sized organisations at a distinct disadvantage. KantanMT changes everything! KantanMT is a cloud-based implementation of MOSES which enables SMEs to embrace the advantages of MT - quickly and economically. This presentation will demonstrate the KantanMT approach to rapid engine training and tuning, data analytics used to predict MT quality and create tiered pricing structures and instantaneous engine deployment - all of which are driving the new MT Revolution!

In defining a project accounting system for an organisation, the needs of both project management and the finance function have to be met. However their needs differ. By combining project and programme management techniques with financial and management accounting methods, a more holistic approach to capturing metrics is possible. Analysis of this will enable focused effort to improve project efficiency and effectiveness.

For years there has been a trench warfare about which way is better, faster and cheaper - Agile or Waterfall; Hybrid projects will finally make it!
Robust Hybrid rather than Agile or Waterfall – why there is finally no alternative
For years there has been a trench warfare between the agile advocates and the traditionalists about which way is better, faster and cheaper - Agile or Waterfall. Introducing Agile in parallel with existing Waterfall processes is a great challenge for many companies. When Macro Management meets Micro Management, processes need to be reviewed and adapted, requiring sensitivity and cooperation. Rainer Wendt will provide useful insights from his experience introducing agile practises in a Waterfall environment, following a practical and feasible hybrid approach where the benefits of Agile can still be realized. You will learn
• Why projects must not be categorized into Agile and Waterfall, robust Hybrid projects will make it
• Where PMO and Program Management need to be patient with Agile people
• What agile Teams need to consider when communicating with and reporting to Waterfall people and vice versa
This SlideCast (with Audio) provides a high level overview of the steps for a Toyota Kata Project. Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Editor's Notes
Another type of baselining is rough cut activity based costing which allows you to relatively quickly get a feel for the costs of a service, and to home in on the ones that have the greatest impact. The concept of mountains [click] is that you identify processes that account for the greatest cost, and ignore the lesser ones (the molehills). [click] Here’s an example. Then you use the 20% rule [click]. Once you’ve worked out an estimate of the potential waste in the system, you ask yourself, what if I’m out by a factor of 20% - would it still matter. If the answer is yes then you can proceed to work on that area because you can be reasonably confident it will gain good results. [here’s an example]So now let’s look at this in a bit more detail… [click]
First, you need to know what your processes are, and here you can use process mapping to help (I haven’t time to discuss process mapping: that’s a whole topic on its own!).Once you have the processes – for example in our reception case study they will include things like handing out and receiving forms – you measure how long the activities within each process take. You don’t just do this for one day and one member of staff: you record the times for several staff over several days and then calculate the average. Now you’re in a position to identify the mountains: those processes that take up most time and resource.Within those, you then identify the three types of activity: value, sustaining value and waste. Anyone who has come across systems thinking will know about these. Briefly, value is the activity that is directly related to providing the service the customer wants, and waste is anything that doesn’t fulfill customer need. So for example, answering a customer’s query right the first time is value, but if a customer has to come back to chase up on something, that’s waste. Sustaining value (or sometimes called sustaining non-value adding) is an activity that you have to do but which isn’t for the customer – examples are filling in timesheets attending staff meetings.Having put everything into one of these three categories, you then work to eliminate the waste – that’s part of what system thinking does; but rc-ABC has helped to identify the waste. The next slide shows a simple activity gathering data sheet [click]
On the left is a list of the processes – in our reception area they are things like issuing forms and allocating people to queues to be seen by experts. One the right is the list of activities within a particular process – here we have the queue allocation process. Obviously there will be a separate form for each of the other processes. You fill in the amount of time taken up by each activity, e.g. 25 minutes per day allocating people to the benefits assessment queue[click] the form calculates the total time for each process, based on several staff’s inputs[click] and the proportion taken up for each process is then shown on the left hand panelSo now you can see the mountain processes – e.g. here we have queue allocation as taking up the most time[click]
