Design Challenge:
o Design a Trashion outfit . ( Trash + Fashion=Trashion)
Wearable art that is innovative in design and uses ‘trash’ material. (R.R.A.N.T.)
o Participate:
Participate in a regional show by modeling an actual outfit. Winners from regional shows will be
invited to the Fall Conference Showcase. Designers do not have to model—they can have a friend wear
the outfit.
o Showcase:
Share with PA colleagues by documenting your creations digitally (on i.e. Prezi or Slideshare) and send
in for the PAEA show in October if you can’t make a regional show or the students can’t make it to the
conference.
Guidelines: With what do we create? R.R.A.N.T.
1. The overall visual impression should be made with—100% R.R.A.N.T. materials
(Recycled, Re-purposed, Altered & Non-Traditional) *what you use for fastening, does not
count—you can sew, use Velcro, duct tape, etc…
2. Must be made to wear on the runway. Does not need to be practical for everyday use, but a human
should be able to model it on the runway without it falling apart.
3. All outfits should have at least one complementary R.R.A.N.T. accessory to finish the ensemble.
4. Must be able to walk up or down stairs in outfit for runway and photo shoot
MODELS: *Students should all wear undergarments, spandex or dance attire under their outfits!
We don’t want any wardrobe malfunctions on the runway.
Judging criteria: Guest Judges will evaluate and pick top winners by the following guidelines:
High Honors: General Judging for all categories is based on the Visual Design criteria below.

2. Trashion Style Choices:
Choose the category that best represents your recycled fashion vision and materials or concept. What
Trashion Style choice will be your starting point? Ask yourself as a designer what inspires you. The following
are suggestions. This challenge is meant to enliven your authentic art creation, not limit it.
1. Materials-Based *R.R.A.N.T.
Inspired by the collection of materials or the altered techniques of using them as design elements
a. Recycled, Re-purposed, altered, non-traditional
*Connection: environmental science( how and why and where recycled materials and trash go…),
math (estimate, charts, stats of materials consumed, etc…percentages of product that is post-
consumer material…), art history (Stuff through the decades…)
2. Concept- Based:--inspired about representing an idea
a. Non-literal or abstract concepts and ideas (i.e. Earth, wind and fire suit)
b. Inspired by a book or movie series…
c. Inspired by another art form or Mash-up of several genres…. (music, dance, etc…)
d. *Wizard of OZ inspiration
*Connections: Related Arts (music, theater, etc…), literature
3. Global Connections:--search the globe for inspiration.
a. Represent and alter ideas based on tribes, cultural costumes for holidays, wardrobe of royalty and
headdresses
b. A visual mash-up (like an Asian Kimono with an Native American tribal head dress…)
*Social Studies Connection, World languages, Art History, Geography

3. Adopt-A-Design Team
Creating Community and engagement by building adult-student partnerships.
We are looking for positive role models to cheer on our design teams to an amazing finish for the PAEA Design Challenge
Show. We would like one or more adults (could also be a department, former elementary principal, etc...) to sponsor a
design team! Very Low commitment… very high reward for the community and the individuals! You’ll know the
students by name—that in itself will show the students they are valued and that their learning and success is expected
and will be celebrated by others! You don’t need to know anything about fashion, you just need to want to see amazing
art occur and realize that you were part of helping in that end result.
What are the adults sponsors expected to do?—

How?
1. Encourage: Send notes, e-mails to show your interest, to encourage them and to offer feedback on their
progress or just let them tell/show you about their designs and ideas. Maybe provide a surprise snack for their
after school work sessions (you can send to the art teacher with a note ). Send them an inspirational quote that
has inspired you or tell them about a time when you set a goal and worked hard to achieve it and how you
overcame obstacles.
2. Attend:
Please save the Date for _________ to attend the Recycled Fashion Showcase. You are also welcome to stop into
any work sessions (we will alert you of those dates) and say hi or check on their progress and help celebrate
them! At the show we will honor the sponsors with special tags and a photo with their team.
3. *Help with Supplies:
You can help collect the recyclables they need for their outfit/design.
You may want to contribute a small gift card for Michael’s, Joann Fabrics or Walmart for any surplus items
like (Duct Tape) that is needed to finish off their ideas. *This is totally optional and will not be relayed to the
teams as an expectation. This is only a suggestion of things you might want to consider.
Why are adult sponsors needed?— We are embarking on an adventure with no certain pathway to solutions.
Sometimes creating, inventing, discovering and doing something that doesn’t have a prescribed pattern or formula can
be lonely or overwhelming for artists and inventors. There is often a good amount of trial and error before excellence is
achieved. For young artists, encouragement and belief in their vision and capabilities can help them to keep pushing
forward to a finish that will surprise even themselves! Robert Frost may have romantically chosen the “path not taken”,
but he left out the fact that it is often rocky and uncertain and requires encouragement and stamina when the
adrenaline of choosing that path wears off. Many of these groups are super excited right now, but I want to challenge
them to strive for excellence and that is sometimes where the reality of required effort starts to diminish their initial
excitement and commitment. However, if they proceed through that waning of emotions, they will often produce
results that are far beyond their years and everyone’s expectations.

Recycled Fashion Workshop Tips:
Contact paper and Lamination from the school library can turn almost anything thin and flat into re-
purposed “fabric” (book pages, aluminum foil, candy bags and wrappers…)
Aluminum foil and newspaper twisted tightly can make a fairly strong cage for under a dress
Buy Velcro in 25 yard rolls. Velcro is great for attaching the seams and strap and closures of outfits and
items.
Emergency Repair Kit:
Bring an emergency repair kit to have on hand
as models are getting dressed and parts or pieces come undone.

The shape, contour and movement of the outfit on the body.
Unique details, fresh Ideas and cool experimental techniques!

Good design-- looks like it works well together—it has Unity.
Does the outfit look like it is still an experiment or do all the parts of the outfit “work together” to create a
unified look?

There was care and pride put into finishing the piece(s). The edges, attachment areas & details were
considered an important part of finalizing the outfit.

8. Recycled Depot
Collecting, labeling and storing ideas
Start off by sending out a Recycled Wish list to your building, department and parents.
Suggestions:
Collect Stuff:
Place containers outside your classroom or in faculty rooms or main office for
donations to be easily collected.
If storage space is an issue in your art room (like most), consider asking your
principal if you can have part of a space for storage (maybe a corner, wall or side)
of a faculty lunch room, boiler room, etc… Since the items are not of high
monetary value, you won’t have to excessively worry about them getting
damaged or taken.
Label Stuff:
After 3 years of collecting and experimenting, it seems easiest to label and
organize stuff by materials and sizes --
o Metals-- Large and small bins
o Plastics-- Large and small bins
o Cardboard-- Large and small bins
Cardboard rolls and tubes
