Project management is the use of specific knowledge, skills, tools
and techniques to achieve/ deliver something of value to the goal of
the project.
Value can be optimization of funds used, time spent, labour involved
etc.

Elements of Management
Project Goal: This element is the ‘initiator’ of the project. A
carefully considered project goal will finally deliver for the desired
objective. It can be very helpful to use the SMART goal framework
to set your goals. SMART stands
for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. The
goals of your project will help you determine the quality standards
of the completed work.
Project Timeline: This is an important element of management and
generally will have to be managed judiciously. There are number of
tools developed for this purpose like CPM and PERT. The entire
activity on timeline can be divided into smaller segments by
introducing micro goals or milestones to be achieved.

Elements of Management
Project Budjet: This element is related to the objective of achieving
the goal. It affects all other elements of management like time,
human and technical resources etc. i.e. You employ more budjet
through human and technical resources to reduce the project
timeline.
Project Scope: project scope includes a list of all of the tasks,
deliverables, deadlines and resources required to hit your goal.
Managing your scope and understanding what deliverables fall in
and out of the allocated scope of the project is critical to ensuring
that work gets completed on time and to the required
specifications.

Elements of Management
Team Skill set: This element is related to management of human
resources. Building a team with the requisite skill set to deliver the
work on time and on budget is crucial to arrive at the desired goal.
Team Motivation: This element is also related to human resource
management. People work better with appropriate motivation in
form of rewards and penalty in form of sense of achievement,
establishment of position in an hierarchal structure of the
organization , recognition etc.
Team Chemistry: People work better if they understand
/compliment / support each other. Management tools can be
employed to generate a team spirit which imporves the Team
Chemistry

Elements of Management
Leadership: Finally, there has to be a continuous assessment of the
process of management through, firstly a ‘bird’s eye view’ of the
process and secondly by appropriate action taken to keep the
process on pre-decided track with a flexibility of incorporating
changes to gain from timely opportunities in the process or avoid
risks and threats.

The above structure can have some variations depending on the nature of project or
desired organizational setup.

Construction Project Management: Participants
Five Major Participants/stakeholders in construction project are:
1. Client/Owner: Initiator of the Project
2. User: User of the end product
3. Designers: Architect and other consultants
4. Executors: Contractors, specialized construction agencies
5. Public Authorities, Agencies: Local Governments, Development
Authorities etc.

Construction Project Management: Participants
Client: client can be an individual, organization or a government department or a corporate
body. The relation of a client with the rest of the participants depends on type of client i.e.
government department as a client will have other participant as other government
organizations While private organizations will have more freedom of selecting/employing
other participants.
Users: users are the most important participant since he will be using and maintaining the
final product of the project but very often this participant is most neglected in terms of their
opinion at the time of decision making on various aspect of the project, especially when the
user is not the client but a third party. i.e. Health ministry is the client for project of
government hospitals but the users are the doctors and other supporting staff which more
often do not have a say in decision making during designing or execution of the project.

Construction Project Management: Participants
Designers: This participant is responsible for translating/interpreting the client’s
requirements into actual facilities to be constructed. In building projects, architect is a
designer who will require to involve other specialists like RCC consultants, services consultants
and supporting subordinates like draftsman, Quantity surveyors etc.
Executors: this participant is responsible for actual physical construction of the project.
They are more often a private organization engaged by the client by contractual agreements
through a process of engagement which may involve tender document. When client
(government deparment) have in-house team then it is said to be done by ‘Direct Labour’. Also
client may place order for specialized item or equipment directly to the suppliers. These items
are necessary for the completion of the project i.e. installation of elevators or escalators, then
these suppliers are also termed as executors.

  • 3. PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Introduction Elements of Management Project Goal: This element is the ‘initiator’ of the project. A carefully considered project goal will finally deliver for the desired objective. It can be very helpful to use the SMART goal framework to set your goals. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. The goals of your project will help you determine the quality standards of the completed work. Project Timeline: This is an important element of management and generally will have to be managed judiciously. There are number of tools developed for this purpose like CPM and PERT. The entire activity on timeline can be divided into smaller segments by introducing micro goals or milestones to be achieved.
  • 4. PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Introduction Elements of Management Project Budjet: This element is related to the objective of achieving the goal. It affects all other elements of management like time, human and technical resources etc. i.e. You employ more budjet through human and technical resources to reduce the project timeline. Project Scope: project scope includes a list of all of the tasks, deliverables, deadlines and resources required to hit your goal. Managing your scope and understanding what deliverables fall in and out of the allocated scope of the project is critical to ensuring that work gets completed on time and to the required specifications.
  • 5. PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Introduction Elements of Management Team Skill set: This element is related to management of human resources. Building a team with the requisite skill set to deliver the work on time and on budget is crucial to arrive at the desired goal. Team Motivation: This element is also related to human resource management. People work better with appropriate motivation in form of rewards and penalty in form of sense of achievement, establishment of position in an hierarchal structure of the organization , recognition etc. Team Chemistry: People work better if they understand /compliment / support each other. Management tools can be employed to generate a team spirit which imporves the Team Chemistry

PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Introduction Elements of Management Leadership: Finally, there has to be a continuous assessment of the process of management through, firstly a ‘bird’s eye view’ of the process and secondly by appropriate action taken to keep the process on pre-decided track with a flexibility of incorporating changes to gain from timely opportunities in the process or avoid risks and threats.

  • 9. PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Introduction Construction Project Management: Participants Five Major Participants/stakeholders in construction project are: 1. Client/Owner: Initiator of the Project 2. User: User of the end product 3. Designers: Architect and other consultants 4. Executors: Contractors, specialized construction agencies 5. Public Authorities, Agencies: Local Governments, Development Authorities etc.
  • 10. PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Introduction Construction Project Management: Participants Client: client can be an individual, organization or a government department or a corporate body. The relation of a client with the rest of the participants depends on type of client i.e. government department as a client will have other participant as other government organizations While private organizations will have more freedom of selecting/employing other participants. Users: users are the most important participant since he will be using and maintaining the final product of the project but very often this participant is most neglected in terms of their opinion at the time of decision making on various aspect of the project, especially when the user is not the client but a third party. i.e. Health ministry is the client for project of government hospitals but the users are the doctors and other supporting staff which more often do not have a say in decision making during designing or execution of the project.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Introduction Construction Project Management: Participants Designers: This participant is responsible for translating/interpreting the client’s requirements into actual facilities to be constructed. In building projects, architect is a designer who will require to involve other specialists like RCC consultants, services consultants and supporting subordinates like draftsman, Quantity surveyors etc. Executors: this participant is responsible for actual physical construction of the project. They are more often a private organization engaged by the client by contractual agreements through a process of engagement which may involve tender document. When client (government deparment) have in-house team then it is said to be done by ‘Direct Labour’. Also client may place order for specialized item or equipment directly to the suppliers. These items are necessary for the completion of the project i.e. installation of elevators or escalators, then these suppliers are also termed as executors.
