PROJECT BASED
LEARNING (PBL)
Level- M.Ed(5225)
Semester- Second
Name- Tej Narayan Chapagain
Introduction
Project-based learning is a Plan-based learning
Based on a student-centered approach
Group activity that lasts for a period of time resulting
in productivity and active participation
Project results in presentation and performance
Students also have independence and correlation
with other subjects
The teacher has to first identify the area of the
project, after which the teacher divides the children
into different areas of the project according to their
interest and the following project in the operation of
the project.

Meaning of PBL
Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method in
which students learn by actively engaging in real-world and
personally meaningful projects.
Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which
students gain knowledge and skills by working for an
extended period of time to investigate and respond to an
authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or
challenge.
Project-based learning is a dynamic classroom approach in
which students actively explore real-world problems and
challenges and acquire a deeper knowledge.
11-03-2021 Tej Narayan Chapagain , Nepal 3
Definition Of PBL
It is a style of active learning and inquiry based learning
Thomas Markham (2011) : PBL integrates knowing and
doing. It focuses on the students not the curriculum and
they know to solve authentic problems which they cannot
be taught through text book but achieved through
experience.
Project Based Learning (PBL) is a model and framework
of teaching and learning in which students acquire
content knowledge and skills in order to answer a driving
question based on an authentic challenge, need, problem
or concern.
Project Based Learning is done collaboratively and within
groups using a variety of employability skills such as
critical thinking, communication, and creativity.
11-03-2021 Tej Narayan Chapagain , Nepal 4
Structure
Project-based learning emphasizes learning activities
that are long-term, interdisciplinary and student-
centered.
Students organize their own work and manage their
own time in a project-based class.
Project-based instruction differs from traditional
inquiry by its emphasis on students' collaborative or
individual artifact construction to represent what is
being learned.
Project-based learning also gives students the
opportunity to explore problems and challenges that
have real-world applications, increasing the
possibility of long-term retention of skills and
concepts.

Essential Elements of PBL
Key Knowledge, Understanding and success skill
Challenging Problem or question
Sustained Inquiry
Authenticity
Student Voice and Choice
Reflection
Critique and Revision
Public Product

Steps to Designing Problem-Based
LearningActivities
Identify an Applicable Real-Life Problem
Determine the Overarching Purpose of the Activity
Create and Distribute Helpful Material
Set Goals and Expectations for Your Students
Participate
Have Students Present Ideas and Findings
11-03-2021 Tej Narayan Chapagain , Nepal 7
• Characteristics of Project Based Learning
 Interdisciplinary
Designed to engage students using real-world problems.
Interdisciplinary approach because real-world challenges
are rarely solved using information or skills from a single
subject area.
Engage students in inquiry, solution building, and
product construction to help address the issue or
challenge presented.
Students do the work, they often use content knowledge
and skills from multiple academic domains to
successfully complete the project.
11-03-2021 Tej Narayan Chapagain , Nepal 8
 Rigorous
Requires the application of knowledge and skills, not just
recall or recognition.
 PBL assesses how students apply a variety of academic
content in new contexts. As students engage in a project,
they begin with asking a question.
Inquiry leads the student to think critically as they are
using their academic knowledge in real-world
applications.
Inquiry process leads to the development of solutions to
address the identified problem.
Show their knowledge in action through the creation of
products designed to communicate solutions to an
audience.
11-03-2021 Tej Narayan Chapagain , Nepal 9
Student - Centered
Students work more independently through the PBL
process, with the teacher providing support only when
needed.
 Students are encouraged to make their own decisions
about how best to do their work and demonstrate their
understanding.
Fosters student independence, ownership of his/her
work, and the development of 21st century/workplace
skills.
It allows some degree of student voice and choice.
PBL incorporates feedback and revision
11-03-2021 Tej Narayan Chapagain , Nepal 10
How to start?
Providing the situation, choosing and proposing,
planning the project,
Implementing every plan,
Evaluating the project,
Keeping the record of the project
Every project has a certain stage through which every
project is conducted, at every stage some project work is
done and the same stages and levels are followed each time.
For a good project we need to do the work in a phased
manner.
11-03-2021 Tej Narayan Chapagain , Nepal 11
Roles of Student/s
Determine their projects, encouraged to take full
responsibility for their learning.
This makes PBL a constructivist learning method.
Students work together.
Use technology to communicate actively with teacher
and peers others.
The student is makes choices on obtaining,
displaying, or manipulating information.
11-03-2021 Tej Narayan Chapagain , Nepal 12
Contd…
Every student has the opportunity to get involved
either individually or as a group.
Student role is to ask questions, build knowledge,
and determine a real-world solution to the
issue/question presented.
Students must collaborate to expand their skills and
engage in focused communication.
Think rationally to solve problems.
PBL forces students to take ownership of their
success.
11-03-2021 Tej Narayan Chapagain , Nepal 13
Instructor Role
As a facilitator
They develop an atmosphre of shared responsibility
while having the overall control of learning
Regulate student success with intermittent,
transistional goals to ensure student project remain
focused and students have a deep understanding of
the concepts being investigated.
Give feedback and assessments
Ensure whether the student stay within the scope of
the question and the core standards the project.
Evaluates the finished product and learning that it
demonstrates

Advantages of PBL
Development of Long-Term Knowledge Retention
Use of Diverse Instruction Types
 Continuous Engagement
 Development of Transferable Skills
Improvement of Teamwork and Interpersonal Skills
It lets the teacher have multiple assessment opportunities.
It allows a child to demonstrate his or her capabilities while
working independently.
It shows the child's ability to apply desired skills such as
doing research.
It develops the child's ability to work with his or her peers,
building teamwork and group skills.
11-03-2021 Tej Narayan Chapagain , Nepal 15
Advantages of PBL Contd…..
It allows the teacher to learn more about the child as
a person.
It helps the teacher communicate in progressive and
meaningful ways with the child or a group of children
on a range of issues.
Learn skills that are essential in higher education
It allow students to expand their minds and think
beyond what they normally would.
Technology allows learners to search in more useful
ways, along with getting more rapid results.
11-03-2021 Tej Narayan Chapagain , Nepal 16
Shortcomings Of PBL
Potentially Poorer Performance on Tests
Student Unpreparedness:-
oi)Immaturity
oii)Unfamiliarity
oiii)Lack of Prerequisite Knowledge .
Teacher Unpreparedness
 Time-Consuming Assessment
Varying Degrees of Relevancy and Applicability
