Stick thousands upon thousands of machines together and there are a lot of potential bottlenecks just waiting to choke off your scalability supply. And if the cloud is scalable what are the chances that your application is really linearly scalable? At 10 machines all may be well. Even at 50 machines the seas look calm. But at 100, 200, or 500 machines all hell might break loose. How do you know?
You know through real life testing. These kinds of tests are brutally hard and complicated. who wants to do all the incredibly precise and difficult work of producing cloud scalability tests? GridDynamics has stepped up to the challenge and has just released their Cloud Performance Reports.

Speaker: Dr. Hai (Helen) Li is the Clare Boothe Luce Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Co-director of the Duke Center for Evolutionary Intelligence at Duke University
In this talk, I will introduce a few recent research spotlights by the Duke Center for Evolutionary Intelligence. The talk will start with the structured sparsity learning (SSL) method which attempts to learn a compact structure from a bigger DNN to reduce computation cost. It generates a regularized structure with high execution efficiency. Our experiments on CPU, GPU, and FPGA platforms show on average 3~5 times speedup of convolutional layer computation of AlexNet. Then, the implementation and acceleration of DNN applications on mobile computing systems will be introduced. MoDNN is a local distributed system which partitions DNN models onto several mobile devices to accelerate computations. ApesNet is an efficient pixel-wise segmentation network, which understands road scenes in real-time, and has achieved promising accuracy. Our prospects on the adoption of emerging technology will also be given at the end of this talk, offering the audiences an alternative thinking about the future evolution and revolution of modern computing systems.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has already been attracting the attention of deep tech investors for some years. The reasons why are clear. In its ‘Sizing The Prize’ analysis of artificial intelligence (AI), PwC forecast that AI will contribute $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030, with the ‘AI boost’ available to most national economies being approximately 26%. But what investors often overlook is that AI is not singular. Many individual components must work together to create AI.
At its core artificial intelligence consists essentially of detecting statistical patterns in signals with many dimensions, such as analysis of audio frequencies (voice recognition) or high-resolution images (face recognition). The repetition of this search in order to detect these patterns is the basis of artificial intelligence.
There are usually three components to AI:
First, given a data set, learning what the patterns are.
Second, building a model that can detect these patterns.
Third, model deployment to the target environment.
Traditionally, data mining or learning was done by experts in the matter who would develop some sort of classifier or detector based on certain features, and then try to see their correlations. This process was tedious and time consuming.

Since 2011, ONS.org.br (responsible for planning and operating the Brazilian Electric Sector) has been using AWS to run daily simulations using complex mathematical models. The use of the MIT StarCluster toolkit makes running HPC on AWS much less complex and lets ONS provision a high performance cluster in less than 5 minutes. Since the elapsed time of a big cluster depends of the user, ONS decide to develop a HPC portal where its engineers can interface with AWS and MIT StarCluster without knowing a line of code or having to use the command terminal. It is just a simple turn-on/turn-off portal. The cluster now gets personal, and every engineer runs the models using HPC on AWS as if they are using a PC.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
