Design for dreams not needs: who do you want your customers to become?Joyce Hostyn
Who do you want your customer to become? Who do you want your coworkers, your organization, your employees, your children, your community, your country, the world to become? What gifts do you have? What gifts do they (those you are designing for) have? To answer these questions well is to discover your own dream. To answer these questions well is to uncover the dreams of those you are designing for.
Who do I want you to become? Someone who dreams beautiful dreams. Someone who helps others dream beautiful dreams. Someone who designs for dreams.
For it is through beautiful dreams that we will create more beautiful organizations, communities, and the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.

From Concept to reality : Implementing Lean Managements DMAIC Methodology for...Rokibul Hasan
The Ready-Made Garments (RMG) industry in Bangladesh is a cornerstone of the economy, but increasing costs and stagnant productivity pose significant challenges to profitability. This study explores the implementation of Lean Management in the Sampling Section of RMG factories to enhance productivity. Drawing from a comprehensive literature review, theoretical framework, and action research methodology, the study identifies key areas for improvement and proposes solutions.
Through the DMAIC approach (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control), the research identifies low productivity as the primary problem in the Sampling Section, with a PPH (Productivity per head) of only 4.0. Using Lean Management techniques such as 5S, Standardized work, PDCA/Kaizen, KANBAN, and Quick Changeover, the study addresses issues such as pre and post Quick Changeover (QCO) time, improper line balancing, and sudden plan changes.
The research employs regression analysis to test hypotheses, revealing a significant correlation between reducing QCO time and increasing productivity. With a regression equation of Y = -0.000501X + 6.72 and an R-squared value of 0.98, the study demonstrates a strong relationship between the independent variables (QCO downtime and improper line balancing downtime) and the dependent variable (productivity per head).
The findings suggest that by implementing Lean Management practices and addressing key productivity inhibitors, RMG factories can achieve substantial improvements in efficiency and profitability. The study provides valuable insights for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers seeking to enhance productivity in the RMG industry and similar manufacturing sectors.

While agile has entered the post-mainstream age, possibly losing its mojo along the way, the rise of remote working is dealing a more severe blow than its industrialization.
In this talk we'll have a look to the cumulative effect of the constraints of a remote working environment and of the common countermeasures.

Impact of Effective Performance Appraisal Systems on Employee Motivation and ...Dr. Nazrul Islam
Healthy economic development requires properly managing the banking industry of any
country. Along with state-owned banks, private banks play a critical role in the country's economy.
Managers in all types of banks now confront the same challenge: how to get the utmost output from
their employees. Therefore, Performance appraisal appears to be inevitable since it set the
standard for comparing actual performance to established objectives and recommending practical
solutions that help the organization achieve sustainable growth. Therefore, the purpose of this
research is to determine the effect of performance appraisal on employee motivation and retention.

Is Agile dead? It depends on what you mean by 'Agile'. If you mean that the organizations are not getting the promised benefits because they were focusing too much on the team-level agile "ways of working" instead of systemic global improvements -- then we are in agreement. It is a misunderstanding of Agility that led us down a dead-end. At Org Topologies, we see bright sparks -- the signs of the 'second wave of Agile' as we call it. The emphasis is shifting towards both in-team and inter-team collaboration. Away from false dichotomies. Both: team autonomy and shared broad product ownership are required to sustain true result-oriented organizational agility. Org Topologies is a package offering a visual language plus thinking tools required to communicate org development direction and can be used to help design and then sustain org change aiming at higher organizational archetypes.

25. …visionaries
…visionary leaders like Dr. Rafiq Zakaria, Mr. R. K. Krishna
Kumar and Mrs. Fatma Rafiq Zakaria created an
educational environment and platform for young
professionals to perform, excel and take the next steps in a
journey facilitated by them by creating world-class
institutions – with support from the industry for the people…
26. …vision
…our most insignificant dreams transform into a grand vision
of our lives, the road ahead may not be visible at the start of
the journey, but you know instinctively what landscape you
want to be a part of, you start converting these visions into
reality, a powerful force inside you starts to convert each of
these ‘wild’ ideas into a future that you gradually walk into…
27. …mission
…life’s mission sometime takes many years to gain clarity, the
earlier you have this established, the rest of life’s direction
becomes simple to follow, start thinking about it now, if you
are clear what you want to achieve, write it down and go
after it every minute without waiting, relentlessly, till you
achieve your goals, nobody will applaud you but yourself…
28. …values
…our human touch to alleviate the suffering of others
has unlimited power to decimate negativity with empathy…
It only takes a caring sensitive mind to extend it where it
matters, trust me it truly works and is cathartic…
…my CSR experiences with Taj is testimony to this…
…grateful to the great TATA value system…
30. …strategy
• …where are we now
• …where do we want to be
• …how are we going to get there
31. …geography
…small towns in unglamorous geographies provide distinct
advantages, the human resource philosophy of the Taj
supplements this view, in fact there are great achievers
who have come from small towns and are seen leading
and performing in large urban centers right at the top…
32. …childhood
…some of our most insignificant dreams, ideas and thoughts
from childhood get transformed into real activities that we are
seen performing everyday…my wildest dreams have led me
to start teaching and learning innovation and change with
my students…indeed child is the father of man…nothing that
a child says, no matter how imaginative must be respected…
34. …a Red-Indian tale of
Youth…for a young boy to
transition into his adulthood,
he has to spend the night
sitting on a rock, from
twilight to sunrise alone in
the jungle, open to the
elements, the dangers of the
jungle and coming to terms
with his own fears and win
over the darkness for the
next morning a young
woman will take him as her
own and the tribe will
rejoice, only if this boy will
become a man overnight…
35. …leadership
Leadership is putting people before you, sometimes also
caring for yourself - so you can care for others, remember that
the team gives the leader an opportunity to lead, so WALK
THE TALK, as best as you can, imperfectly sometimes, great
teams provide transparent feedback on performance
enhancement. Nobody is perfect, not even the best leader.
36. …career
…careers emerge as people develop competences that
they do not carry from their institutions, their skills,
knowledge, experience and inter-personal abilities
develop leadership traits which start facilitating future roles
as time passes, progression depends on performance …
37. …family
…one often fails to acknowledge the positive role - the presence
of a family plays in our lives, as busy professionals haring about
from one critical task to another, we take them for granted, they
continue to remain in our lives in-spite of our position, social
status or monetary legacy…one of the regrets of choosing career
continuity over family time is that the clock never turns back…
38. …materialism
…you will never have the time for personal profits – so
delegate this to a specialist or choose a trustworthy and
competent partner in life.
39. …guests
….many of the guests you will serve tomorrow are not yet
born or are too young now to pay your salary – so respect
millennial and younger people all along your journey.
40. …service
…superlative service will become a threshold benchmark, so
reinvent your own signature service - if you don’t want to be
outrun.
42. 1. …one learns very
quickly in the
hospitality industry
that life can be a
bed of flowers only if
you have the
perspective to see it
that way…
2. …there will never be
an uninteresting day
when you will not be
pinched with
excitement…
3. …when these
pinches become a
little painful you learn
to find your own
sweet method to
deal with the pain…
43. And athletic growth pains
are tolerable, young people
know - it teaches you
sublimation, especially when
you work on endless shifts
that seem to go on for ever.
(secret)…anything that
doesn’t kill you can only make
you STRONGER…
45. MUSIC SPEAKS A LANGUAGE
THAT ONLY A FEW CAN FAIL
TO EXPERIENCE…
…your innate intimate communication with art, music
and the performing arts does more for the soul than the
knowledge of art itself…the absorption of this expression
is supreme…it reveals blind-spots in your being that are
unknown to you…and you change into another being…
46. …work, life, (im)balance
…the boundaries between work, life and family are often
obscured as you get drawn into the passion of hospitality,
education, learning and leading that you learn to enjoy the
lack of boundaries as one flows into the other seamlessly…
47. …rest and relaxation
…whether it is underwater utopia, a desert safari or a snow
sensation, plan adequately to take time off work, to be with
yourself, family, do the things that really make you special, like
sing, paint, write and simply enjoy yourself with your friends, if
you wait to get rich, have the right house, car, wife, children,
club and company…you will only be left waiting…
48. …contrasts
…life becomes meaningful only
because of the contrasts or else it
would be plain and uninteresting…so
value each lesson as it
comes…another one will follow soon…
49. …romance, state of mind
pros…brings out the best of your poetic,
artistic, expressive, ability and gives you glazed
eyes for no particular rational reason…
50. …romance, post script experience
…i learnt that it is a commitment requiring endless reserves…
…of time, energy, resources (money), patience, renewal, hope, faith…
…ultimately in the end resulting in a dramatic conclusion called marriage...
…that begins a brand new chapter where wisdom must win over passion…
…the enormous effort committed to this academic exercise must be
awarded… a PhD in CCC (consistent collaborative co-habitation) …
51. …mentors
…when you are not working or online or on your smart-
phone – make time for your parents, well-wishers,
teachers and friends – usually, they will be delighted to
have only your time and attention – nothing substantial
that will leave you poorer but in fact empower you
immensely….
52. …achievement
…it is extremely important not to allow achievement to cloud
your judgment of your capability, never rest on your laurels,
you are only as good as the last best thing you have done for
you organization, your team, your family and yourself. No
matter how great you are as a star, your collective
achievement with your people and society is what matters…
53. …feelings
…feelings are a method by which the large external universe
manifests inside you urging you to explore the depths of your
personality, each of these feelings must be captured, they
have enormous potential, these must be translated into the
real and rational domain to give them shape and make them
a basis for all future inspiration so read, write, paint, perform…
54. …intuition
…though I’m a firm believer in
data…sometimes your intuition is more
accurate…this will separate humanity from
machines…especially in the future…
55. …re-invention
…everything has a life-cycle, we need to learn how to
constantly re-invent ourselves, renew our abilities,
perspectives and transform into more evolved beings with
time, a critical view of yourselves with respect to your
ability to face new world challenges is a starting point…
57. …relationship
…build relationships with people, cultures and countries that
you have not yet connected with. This knowledge will keep
you in business longer.
58. …terror
….in the aftermath of the terror strike of 26/11, which left a
deep impact on many families, the indomitable spirit of the
Taj shone through-an article published in the Harvard Business
Review that December 2011 is with the audience now…
59. …on success and failure
…behind every (un/successful) man, there is a woman, telling
him that he is wrong…my biggest critic - my wife Shubhada
for providing me with her perspective, not necessarily the one
I want to agree with or implement, just that it is democratic…
60. …philosophy
…life-long learning is an exciting journey and humanity’s ultimate
destination, the only sustainable legacy is our power, ability and
endeavours to develop infinitely, as catalysts of change, we must
grow our planet responsibly, positively and passionately, this is our
prime duty to the Universe now.
62. …innovation
…innovation will be the life-blood of our human race, so keep
your creative juices flowing, think out-of-the-box and
remember that impossible is nothing, remember when you
have to keep running to stay in the same place that you hold
now, you better have the best pair of ‘thinking’ shoes and
feet. Innovation and change will not wait, race it down now…
63. …virtual reality
• Virtual
Partners
• Virtual
Medicine
• Virtual
Gaming
…virtual work partners, social partners and creative work-
places will soon become the order of the day…everything
from virtual gaming, virtual medicine and virtual work will soon
become a reality…we may start trusting our virtual partners
more than our real ones…before they acquire a brain or start
developing artificial intelligence…so keep yourselves sharp…
64. …hi tech or hi-touch
…the perennial debate of whether the future will be hi-tech or
hi-touch will be resolved in favor of a superior technology
which will allow you to touch people better than ever
before…energy is already being saved by kinetic corridors,
the new bed-pod will ensure that humans have the most
valuable source of rest…a good nights sleep - it will be rare…
65. …technology
…embrace and enslave technology, high touch will always
be smarter than high-tech, computing and telephony will
completely converge – putting an end to privacy, so make
friends with new technologies that allow you to be yourself…
…Make MY time even if it is on-line, network socially, in your
old age you’ll be wiser for it…if you want to stay connected
with the next generation…
66. …multi-tasking or mega-tasking
…poly-chronism will soon become a reality, future
professionals will be sought after for their ability to multi-task,
mega-task, use both their right and left brains simultaneously,
so prepare your self for a tasked future. Work was never easy,
it will only get more complex as time passes by, the next
generation will need to do more to stay in the game…
67. …transformation
…a click-eye will take pictures in future, virtually every-thing
will be purchased on-line, there has to be an exceptional
reason for people to interact with you, so make yourself
special and keep renewing yourself…plan to write a daily
blog, create a website for yourself, remember to post your
positivity on people, even if you cannot physically be there
for them…use facebook, whatsapp, twitter, whatever…
68. …hospitality 2020
…though fundamental hospitality will not change, rooms of
the future will have nanotechnology painted walls, combined
bath and bath units, wardrobe consulting systems on wash-
basins, e-windows with changing landscapes chosen by
guests, video-tiles, self cleaning nanotechnology fibers, touch
screen walls, light emitting pillows and an auto foot massage.
Of course, instead of a butler, you will have a botler…a robot.
…
69. …the ingredients, methods and engagement make the recipe better…
…remember grandma never used a quick-fix button for anything…
…we now call it process management…
70. …there was no magic
formula only the passion
and belief that some day
we would make a small
difference, turning the
world into a better place
than was bequeathed to
us and entrust the same
responsibility to the next
generation …
