This document discusses using FME to process large datasets for the National Broadband Map project. It involved processing coverage statistics for every census block across all US counties and states from multiple providers. FME was chosen due to its ability to automate processing at scale, perform fast overlay and dissolve operations, and interoperate with Oracle and ESRI formats. The project used a modular, iterative workflow design where individual FME workspaces processed subsets of data by state or county to handle the massive data volumes within a tight one-month deadline. Improvements to the iterator pattern were discussed to optimize performance and add capabilities like failure tracking and distributed processing across multiple engines.
