Transformer Loading, Driving Enterprise Decisions with ArcGIS OnlineSSP Innovations
In the past MTEMC has oversized their transformers across the utility due to a lack of consumption data in GIS. MTEMC joined SSP Innovations to auto-load SAP consumption data, perform aggregation for peak usage, and to visualize the data in ArcGIS Online via a thematic map. Field troubleshooters use Collector for ArcGIS to view the load profile for any transformer showing peak usage against the transformer size. This results in cost savings and has generated drivers for many other uses of the data and of ArcGIS Online.

Flink Forward San Francisco 2018 keynote: Stephan Ewen - "What turns stream p...Flink Forward
Stream Processing is a powerful paradigm, especially when backed by a system like Apache Flink. With each release and year, we see Flink being used for more challenging use case and applications.
But beyond the individual application (though it may be grand and challenging in itself), stream processing is a much broader building block: the foundational piece of a platform that brings together the different parts of a data architecture. A platform that integrates data analytics, data ingestion, SQL, Machine Learning, data provenance, databases, and other aspects of a data-driven infrastructure in a meaningful way.
In this keynote, we look at what goes into building a stream processing platform that is more than the sum of its parts.
This presentation will talk about the Clustered Data ONTAP features that have been enhanced in 8.3.1. Major topic areas include MetroCluster, two-node clusters, foreign LUN import enhancements, and Storage Virtual Machine (SVM) disaster recovery. Other enhancements that will be discussed are the ability to have an all-flash FAS, using non-default IPspaces for cluster peering, and audit log forwarding.

Architecting and Tuning IIB/eXtreme Scale for Maximum Performance and Reliabi...Prolifics
Abstract: Recent projects have stressed the "need for speed" while handling large amounts of data, with near zero downtime. An analysis of multiple environments has identified optimizations and architectures that improve both performance and reliability. The session covers data gathering and analysis, discussing everything from the network (multiple NICs, nearby catalogs, high speed Ethernet), to the latest features of extreme scale. Performance analysis helps pinpoint where time is spent (bottlenecks) and we discuss optimization techniques (MQ tuning, IIB performance best practices) as well as helpful IBM support pacs. Log Analysis pinpoints system stress points (e.g. CPU starvation) and steps on the path to near zero downtime.

Zero Downtime Architectures based on JEE platform. Almost every big enterprise with online business tries to design its applications in a way that they are always online. But is it also the case when we upgrade the database cluster? When we switch the whole data center? Based on a customer project we try to present common architecture principles that enable you to do all this without any service interruption and the most important: without any stress.
Desktop to Cloud Transformation PlanningPhearin Sok
Traditional desktop delivery model is based on
a large number of distributed PCs executing operating system
and desktop applications. Managing traditional desktop
environments is incredibly challenging and costly. Tasks like
installations, conguration changes, security measures require
time-consuming procedures and dedicated deskside support. Also
these distributed desktops are typically underutilized, resulting
in low ROI for these assets. Further, this distributed computing
model for desktops also creates a security concern as sensitive
information could be compromised with stolen laptops or PCs.
Desktop virtualization, which moves computation to the data
center, allows users to access their applications and data using
stateless thin-clientdevices and therefore alleviates some of
the problems of traditional desktop computing. Enterprises can
now leverage the exibility and cost-benets of running users'
desktops on virtual machines hosted at the data center to enhance
business agility and reduce business risks, while lowering TCO.
Recent research and development of cloud computing paradigm
opens new possibilities of mass hosting of desktops and providing
them as a service.
However, transformation of legacy systems to desktop clouds
as well as proper capacity provisioning is a challenging problem.
Desktop cloud needs to be appropriately designed and provisioned
to offer low response time and good working experience
to desktop users while optimizing back-end resource usage and
therefore minimizing provider's costs. This paper presents tools
and approaches we have developed to facilitate fast and accurate
planning for desktop clouds. We present desktop workload
proling and benchmarking tools as well as desktop to cloud
transformation process enabling fast and accurate transition of
legacy systems to new cloud-based model.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
