2. A primary health center with 30000 population
gives the following data of 1 year.
Age group Number of women Number of live births in 1
year
15-24 2000 500
25-34 1800 250
35-44 1400 90
Total 5200 840
Calculate -
Crude birth rate
General fertility rate
Age specific fertility rate
Total fertility rate
3. Crude birth rate
Simplest indicator of fertility.
Number of live births per 1000 estimated mid year population in
a given area during a given year.
Unsatisfactory measure of fertility because total population is not
exposed to child bearing.
Does not give a true idea of fertility of a population.
4. CBR = 840 * 1000 / 30000 = 28 per thousand
population
5. General fertility rate
Number of live births per 1000 women in the reproductive age
group, irrespective of their marital status in a given year.
Better measure of fertility than crude birth rate because the
denominator is restricted to the number of women in child
bearing age, rather than the whole population.
Major weakness- not all women in the denominator are
exposed to risk of child birth.
6. GFR = 840 * 1000 / 5200 = 161.538 per thousand females
7. Age specific fertility rate
More precise measure of fertility.
Number of live births in a year to 1000 women in any
specified age group.
Throws light on fertility pattern.
Sensitive indicators of family planning achievement.
8. ASFR for ages 15-24 = 500 * 1000 / 2000 = 250 per thousand females
ASFR for ages 25-34 = 250 * 1000 / 1800 = 138.89 per thousand females
ASFR for ages 35-44 = 90 * 1000 / 1400 = 64.29 per thousand females
9. Total fertility rate
Represents average number of children , a woman would
have if she were to pass through her reproductive years
bearing children at the same rates as the women now in
each age group.
Measure gives approximate magnitude of completed family
size.
