Beyond the punishment:
Work: only 40 working positions, mainly on rotation
(one month of work, two months of rest)
School: from basic school to high school, about 120 students.
Trio: at distance learning project by Regione Toscana.
Sport: 2 hours a day, 4 days a week, access to the sport
ground for playing football or for footing. Rugby once a week
with a trainer.
Cultural proposals: theatre workshop and shows, conferences,
writing workshop, handicraft workshop, meditation, psychodrama.

420 only men, 40% foreigners
medium and long penalties
(from 5 years to longlife - end of
penalty: never)
no “mafia” or terrorism

The Spanish Fortress, built by
Philip II of Spain in 1563
to a design by Don Garcia
Toledo, has a star-shaped
reminiscent of the
Castle of Anversa and
had the function
to control the entry to the
harbor

In 1860, Forte San Giacomo changed his original destination and became
life imprisonment.
Currently, the Institute maintains acceptable levels of functionality, even if
it requires consistent maintenance and renovation.
The institute is equipped with common areas intended for the cinema hall,
the music hall , classrooms, library, chapel, etc. ..
In the past they were active at the House of Detention very active
laboratories including weaving, bookbinding, the transcription of books
for the visually impaired, the printing and the newspaper "The Great
Promise" .
Currently almost all laboratories are closed and remain only those carried
out through voluntary local associations and cooperatives.

In some sections of the prison cells are open from
8.00 am until 19.30 pm.
In other sections instead the cells remain closed.
The institute is very interested in the
re-employment of prisoners, particularly those
who have penis rather long and for which leave to
work becomes indispensable
