Forum. This month we looked at sudden and unexpected child deaths and the 2013 Child Fatality Report.Result
According to a survey of 266 people in Brunei Darussalam, 54% were female and 46% male. The main social issues identified were drugs, unwanted pregnancy, smoking, and corrupted morals. Most females (35%) thought the biggest problem was drug abuse, while most males (41%) thought smoking was the largest issue. Both genders agreed that those aged 11-20 were most at risk. The government is recommended to take more action to restrict youth involvement in these problems, and community campaigns should raise awareness of the consequences. In conclusion, while drugs, pregnancy, and morals were overall issues, smoking disproportionately impacts male youth in Brunei.

Young Mums to Be Study: West Lothian Sure Start

While most women saw doctors regularly, few did so for alcohol or mental health, and many were reluctant due to concerns about confidentiality, judgment and discrimination. The study aims to understand these issues better through interviews and develop training to improve healthcare provider competency.

Youths in Papua New Guinea are influenced to commit crimes due to rapid social, political, and economic changes in the country. Nearly half of Papua New Guinea's population of 8.8 million are under the age of 18. Youths are motivated to commit crimes due to factors like poor academic performance, difficult family relationships, lack of parental supervision, substance abuse issues, and mental health problems. To reduce crime rates, Papua New Guinea should create targeted prevention programs, avoid overly repressive policies, address crime from a public health perspective, increase early childhood education, and find a balance between prevention and law enforcement.
EMERGING HUMAN RIGHTS CONCERNS
Drug abuse, especially among youth, is a growing problem in Uganda. Over 140 people were admitted to Butabika Hospital for drug abuse in recent studies, most between ages 16-25. 22% of students in Kampala have used and abused drugs like alcohol, marijuana, opium, cocaine, and inhalants. Drug abuse is rising internationally and more patients are being put on waiting lists due to limited capacity. Youth start abusing drugs in school and university and later drop out to join gangs, driven by desires for acceptance, pleasure seeking, or escaping family problems. Weak drug laws and lack of public awareness from parents and students exacerbate the problem. There is also little attention given to drug dependence treatment or advocacy
Youth rise harm reduction for young people - barriers
Youth RISE is a global network that promotes evidence-based drug policies and harm reduction strategies involving young people who use drugs. They work to build capacity for harm reduction, advocate for more effective drug policies, and increase youth involvement in advocacy. Their approach supports local youth organizations through grants, training, and research to understand local drug scenes. Effective youth harm reduction requires services that are culturally sensitive, address multiple health issues, ensure youth involvement, and include skills training. Criminalization and punitive drug policies worsen HIV by forcing people underground and alienating youth from services.
