Today marks the day of our first Social Psychology lesson. The class started off with a mini
experiment that tests us on how well we know ourselves. When the results came, what we
expected is actually the exact opposite – I didn’t know myself that well. Then the lecture starts,
the lecturer asked us to write 5 “I am…”(s) that describes ourselves.
This was from my 5 “I am…”s:
1. I am a boy
2. I am a son
3. I am a student
4. I am an architecture student
5. I am Preston
We were to present all 5 of our “I am…”s to the class in groups of 5. It was interesting to see the
way my course mates described themselves. Some gave some weird and funny answers as well
as full-of-confidence ones such as “I am confident in my own way”, “I am a sohai” (Sohai =
Retard). We are at the center stage of our own lives – Spotlight effect. And then we continued on
with the lecture. The next part of the lecture, the lecturer asked us to close our eyes and visualize
someone who is happy, and visualize the way they see us through their eyes and the way they
think.
All in all, the whole lecture was very interesting as it involves a lot of participation like getting
into a circle with the lecturer etc.

Today’s the 2nd lecture for my tutorial group. The topic for the day is The Powers and Perils of
Intuition.
We were divided into two groups when the lecturer started – Controlled & Automatic.
Controlled – controls brain normally with legit reasons.
Automatic – controls brain unconsciously through stimuli.
Automatic also refers to emotional response through recognizing people through the way they
look/dress, sound, act etc.
Then we formed into a circle and the lecturer asked us to give our first impression of a friend.
Some might be shy or clueless about the topic; there are also some who gave true and realistic
answers.
And then the lecture continues on with how are bank stores our experience, knowledge or
memory into some sort of bank. We can take all of them out from the “bank” if we could recall
them.
Today’s lecture is actually more informative than interactive than the previous one but it is still
full of facts and interesting knowledge.

This lecture starts off with a simple introduction of how light works in our eyes. The structure of
the eye was also included in the slides just like our secondary school’s biology class. And then
we were shown how colour affects our daily mood and how it affects us mentally. The lecturer
also showed us how the colour red attracts more attention from men without them realizing it.
After that, the lecturer showed us some examples of optical illusions and stresses how it fatigues
our mind as it involves a lot of thinking. The lesson for today is actually helpful for my critical
thinking skills and brought a whole new perspective towards the way I view things now.
