This document discusses the perspectives and activities of the Academic Liaison Team at Monash University Malaysia.
It introduces the members of the School Liaison Unit and their roles in supporting different schools. It then discusses the unit's contributions to teaching, learning, and research through various programs embedded in academic courses and partnerships with faculty. Examples of successful collaborations that strengthened student work are provided.
The document also examines challenges of embracing changes in education, such as shifts to blended learning. It outlines the unit's successes in increasing student work quality and visibility on campus. It concludes by looking ahead to reviewing library offerings and developing sustainable partnerships to further embed research skills in coursework.

This study intends to explore the current trends in the field of distance education research catalogued in Web of Science (WoS) database during 1980-2016. Mainly bibliographic description and social network analysis was employed to investigate the structure and patterns of information exchanged within the field of distance education research and also to interpret the interrelationship between keywords indicated in these articles. A total of 500 most cited articles (out of 6,141 relevant to the topic) were reviewed to examine the impact of factors such as journal DOI and keywords on the number of citations that they received. We also identified major trends in distance education literature including variation across publication and citation year, top ranking of institutions and top ranking of published papers based on authors, subject area and co-authorship collaboration between countries. Our results show that the most cited articles are from two institutions of United States and United Kingdom and the most prolific years in terms of number of published articles and citations are 2013.We also found non-significant and very small correlation between the number of citation and DOI number of the journals. Our study serves as a resource for future studies by indicating how trends in distance education research have gradually developed over time and demonstrating the characteristics of the most cited articles in this literature.

This paper examined the relationship between teaching and research performance of lecturers in the context of federal polytechnics in North-Eastern Nigeria. A simple random sampling method was used in selecting a total of 320 lecturers and 600 students from the polytechnics. For this study t-Test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and percentage were used to carry out the analysis. Our results show that there is zero or no relationship between been active researcher and been a qualitative teacher. We also suggest that the institution should employ astute researchers as well as passionate teachers in order to satisfy the mission of tertiary institutions and meet societal and industry expectations.

LeakChecker: Practical Static Memory Leak Detection for Managed LanguagesDacong (Tony) Yan
Static detection of memory leaks in a managed language such as Java is
attractive because it does not rely on any leak-triggering inputs,
allowing compile-time tools to find leaks before software is
released. A long-standing issue that prevents practical static memory
leak detection for Java is that it can be very expensive to statically
determine object liveness in large applications. We present a novel
(and the first practical) static leak detection technique that
bypasses this problem by considering a common leak pattern. In many
cases severe leaks occur in loops where, in each iteration, some
objects created by the iteration are unnecessarily referenced by
objects external to the loop. These unnecessary references are never
used in later loop iterations. Based on this insight, we shift our
focus from computing liveness, which is very difficult to achieve
precisely and efficiently for large programs, to the easier goal of
identifying objects that flow out of a loop but never flow back in.
We formalize this analysis using a type and effect system and present
its key properties. The analysis was implemented in a tool called
LeakChecker and used to detect leaks in eight real-world programs,
such as Eclipse, Derby, and log4j. LeakChecker not only identified
known leaks, but also discovered new ones whose causes were
unknown beforehand, while exhibiting a false positive rate suitable
for practical use.
1. System Disturbances: A system disturbance can be defined as any event that causes the frequency and/or voltage of the system to deviate from the normal range of operation. These are caused by incidents such as occurrence of short circuits, generator trips, feeder trips, sudden increase of power output of a generator due to a defect in its control system.
The responses of the healthy machines for such events should be so as to return the system to the normal status as quickly as possible and with as little manual intervention as possible. Therefore, the response of machines is of utmost importance from the point of view of system security and reliability.

proposte, soluzioni nelle imprese e nelle case.
Trust and Influence in the Complex Network of Social MediaTeradata Aster
William Rand, University of Maryland, presents at the 2012 Big Analytics Roadshow.
The dramatic feature of social media is that it gives everyone a voice; anyone can speak out and express their opinion to a crowd of followers with little or no cost or effort, which creates a loud and potentially overwhelming marketplace of ideas. The good news is that the organizations have more data than ever about what their consumers are saying about their brand. The bad news is that this huge amount of data is difficult to sift through. We will look at developing methods that can help sift through this torrent of data and examine important questions, such as who do users trust to provide them with the information and the recommendations that they want? Which tastemakers have the greatest influence on social media users? Using agent-based modeling, machine learning and network analysis we begin to examine and shed light on these questions and develop a deeper understanding of the complex system of social media.

This paper outlines the development of a project supported by the Scottish Government with the aim of promoting the development of mathematical thinking in the primary classroom. This was developed in collaboration with teachers and local authorities in North East Scotland during 2011-12 within the context of the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence reform. The project was set up within a design based research framework, which aimed to promote classroom-based action research on the part of participants and also research by the university researchers into the process of curriculum development. The teachers (n=24) were all involved in a jointly developed Masters course based on a blended learning approach within an open and flexible learning environment. This project was designed as a classic example of an “Open Collective Cycle” model of a professional learning community (Hudson, 2012; Huberman, 1995). Findings from the research study in relation to the teachers’ experience are reported in Hudson et al. (2015), which highlight the way the course had a transformational and emancipatory impact on these teachers concerning their levels of confidence and competence in relation to teaching mathematics. An example of the impact on student learning is reported in Hudson (2015a) based on one teacher-researcher’s action research project involving the development of a topic-based approach to teaching and learning mathematics. Findings from this study highlight the ways in which the children actively engaged in the class activity and also how the topic-based approach made the mathematics more widely accessible and led to an evolution in the development of mathematical thinking for all. Policy implications point towards the value of the Mathematics Specialist Teacher (MaST) approach in England, which informed the development of this project. In conclusion the paper outlines a potential approach to uncovering and documenting further impact on teachers and pupils involved in this and subsequent courses.

Learning Analytics and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning - an obvious ...Blackboard APAC
The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) essentially advocates for a research approach to be applied to the improvement of learning and teaching. It encourages teachers to reflect in a scholarly way on their teaching practice and at the more advanced level to undertake research on teaching practice and curriculum. Learning analytics has the potential to provide data on elements of the teaching process which have to date been difficult to measure particularly for the broader cohort of teachers.
This presentation will draw attention to the connection between SoTL and learning analytics and prompt participants to think about how learning analytics can be used in a wider context to contribute to changes in teaching design and practice.

School examination results the world over are arguably the most important measure of perceived success or failure
of a candidate. It has been pointed out by the Nyanza Provincial Education Board that the province’s performance in
examinations and the quality of education in general is unsatisfactory and inadequate. The paper sought to determine
the contribution of teacher qualification to students’ scores. The study adopted the Theory of Organisational Climate
which defines organisational climate as the human environment within which an organization’s employees do their
work. A case study and survey design was used. Purposive sampling was used to identify the four schools under study
and form three students. Simple random sampling was used to select the respondents of the study. Data was analyzed
using both qualitative and quantitative using descriptive statistics in particular percentages and means. The study
found that teachers’ qualifications affect teaching ability while knowledge of teachers’ subject was among the major
teacher factors contributing to students’ academic achievements.
