Week 9: Earth and Space SciencesThe Earth and Space Sciences sub-strand
This week we will be exploring the Science Understanding sub-strand of Earth and Space Sciences. The study of Earth and Space Sciences focuses on developing students’ understandings of their place both within the broader universe and at a much closer level developing their understanding of geological processes and the weather and environment on Earth. We will continue our exploration of models to support understanding and provide examples of how to use digital technology in our science lessons.
Begin by watching the video Science & Space: Solar System 101(National Geographic Kids, 2014). What do you recall from your own education and what is new information for you?
Then watch the short video Make a mini solar system (ABC Splash, 2014) about modelling a mini solar system and think about how do we get across to students the sheer size of something as big as the solar system?

Tania Pinto, Learning science In the 21st century (T43)Brussels, Belgium
This document summarizes a teaching experience using problem-based learning (PBL) across 3 science classes in different schools in Portugal. The lessons focused on moon craters, volcanic activity, and seismology. Students worked collaboratively in groups to research problems, conduct experiments using digital simulations, and present their findings. A questionnaire found that students largely enjoyed the lessons, felt they learned, and liked conducting experiments and using software. The lessons aimed to develop 21st century skills like collaboration, problem-solving, and ICT skills. Further research with more themes and students could better evaluate PBL's long-term effects on learning.
The document discusses the universe of knowledge and its key attributes. It defines the universe of knowledge as the totality of all knowledge that has survived until the present and will continue to be generated. It is described as infinite, multidimensional, dynamic and expanding in all directions over time. Segments within the universe of knowledge can merge or split off to form new segments. Subjects are composed of one or more segments and have their own characteristics, with subject names and headings sometimes changing over time.
This document discusses the importance of astronomy education and providing students with a basic understanding of the universe. It notes that astronomy was once considered a core subject but was removed from school curriculums in the late 19th century. While efforts in the 1950s-70s helped reintroduce astronomy, it is still not widely taught. The document argues that giving students a basic knowledge of astronomy and our place in the universe could help promote peace, understanding and make the world a better place.
This document discusses using sidewalk astronomy as a public outreach strategy. It summarizes research on visitors to the Science Centre Observatory and sidewalk astronomy events. Visitors to the observatory tended to be young, educated and learn astronomy online but did not represent the general public. Sidewalk events attracted non-museum goers and were more effective for public education. Surveys found that sidewalk attendees had little prior stargazing experience but were curious and felt the events increased their understanding and awareness of astronomy. The document concludes sidewalk astronomy is a good way to partner with local communities and reach more people to fulfill the mission of promoting science interest.
The document outlines plans for the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009), a global celebration and awareness campaign coordinated by the International Astronomy Union (IAU). The goals are to increase scientific awareness, promote access to astronomical knowledge and experiences, empower developing countries, support education, and provide a modern image of science. Key projects and events include 100 Hours of Astronomy, Galileoscope telescope kits, the Cosmic Diary blog, the Portal to the Universe website, and engaging the public through various national and local celebrations and activities around the world.

The aim of the Year is to stimulate worldwide interest, especially among young people, in astronomy and science under the central theme "The Universe, Yours to Discover". IYA2009 events and activities will promote a greater appreciation of the inspirational aspects of astronomy that embody an invaluable shared resource for all nations.
This document provides information about space, cosmology, the Big Bang theory, and the formation and significance of stars. It discusses what space is, the study of cosmology, evidence for the Big Bang, how stars are formed from nebulae and gravitational collapse, and how stars provide light, heat, energy and are essential for life on Earth.
The Geohistorical Time Arrow From Stenos Stratigraphic PrinciplesGadi Kravitz
This document discusses the philosophical and theoretical foundations of geology's embrace of the "time arrow" from past to present. It analyzes Nicolas Steno's principles of stratigraphy, which first established this direction of time, though based on biblical assumptions rather than scientific justification. Modern geology justifies the time arrow through the uniformity principle and the second law of thermodynamics. However, the thermodynamic time arrow also relies on the unproven "past hypothesis." The author argues geology educators should better understand these philosophical underpinnings of geology's basic assumptions.
This document provides an overview of wound healing, its functions, stages, mechanisms, factors affecting it, and complications.
A wound is a break in the integrity of the skin or tissues, which may be associated with disruption of the structure and function.
Healing is the body’s response to injury in an attempt to restore normal structure and functions.
Healing can occur in two ways: Regeneration and Repair
There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.
Complications of wound healing like infection, hyperpigmentation of scar, contractures, and keloid formation.
